This one's gonna be a fun one! Let's talk about some of the movements, genres and bands that've falsely been called metal throughout the decades! (or, alternatively, bands that aren't considered metal that likely are!). At the end of the day, it's all in good fun and labels don't particularly matter all that much. But what're your opinions on this topic and what bands do you think aren't/are metal that get falsely portrayed?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I think there's definitely a case to be made for Alice in Chains as something like alternative metal, and maybe a bit of Soundgarden's output can fit that glove in a similar way, but it's also obvious that no other "grunge" band comes close.

Well, Grunge is extremely metal adjacent, even Nirvana started off with big groove/stoner/doom metal influences. But Alice In Chains is the only band I feel very confident in saying that is metal, especially if you scrape off half Facelift (Man In The Box included, which is honestly just a heavier Guns N Roses/Bon Jovi song) and pretty much the entirety of Black Gives Way To Blue.
I think Dirt and Tripod can pretty comfortably be put in the Alternative Metal, if not in the Doom/Sludge Metal category. Songs like Junkhead, Sickman or Frogs outdoom some actual doom bands' best attempts.
Yeah, they're more melodic and songwritey than most metal, but if you're willing to put System of a Down into metal, you can't exclude AIC.

Of course they won't, only because they do solos and play with fast double pedals and blast beats and some occasional tremolo, and that's very "Metal". But if they didnt have that, people would not even respect them because nowdays metal is measured by how guttural or agressive is, and if its not double kicks or blast beats or gutturals then it doesnt count as "metal" for most people nowadays.

Slipknot isn't metal. Lol. It's alt rock with harsh vocals, occasional death metal riffs, and way too much hip hop influence (record scratches!). Their music is aggressive (heavier than a lot of actual metal), but it's not metal because it's not centered on metal riffs or metal song structures. Heavy, distorted guitars; harsh vocals; and aggressive drumming do not equal metal. Lineage is also important - Slipknot's musical lineage is stuff like Faith no More and Tool, not Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Venom, etc.

One subgenre I find to be a huge minefield is grindcore. Sometimes its closer to death metal, sometimes its closer to punk, sometimes its closer to non-rock genres (such as cybergrind), sometimes it's closer to just being noise music. Grindcore can be such a wild, bizarre, and chaotic genre of music. Maybe avoiding being classified as strictly anything, be it extreme metal or punk, is the intention.

@@killahasbigrpk8711 A lot of people think that, including the music industry itself until the past couple of years or so when the Grammys finally detached the metal awards from the rock awards. However this couldn't be further from the truth. Metal originated from rock, yes. It uses the same instrumental lineup, yes. There is a lot of overlap between the 2 genres, yes. However you could say the exact same thing just replacing metal with blues. I don't see anyone calling rock a sub-genre of blues. Metal is even more different than rock than rock is from blues, especially at this point in time. In fact at this point metal has many more sub and sub-sub-genres than rock, and rock has a whole lot of those itself.

Here's my opinions (Sorry if its kinda rambly, Ive had a long day lol):
Glam: Rock, that's all it is, they are called "rock stars" for a reason.
Sleep token: Of course they are metal. People just get mad it has rnb and hip hop parts but I personally love it
Grunge/Post-Grunge: I would call them an alternative metal sort of thing sound wise but many of them come from a rock background which make them lean in that direction. Some, like nirvana almost tip the scales entirely and are almost punk in a way. It really all depends on what band we are talking about and even then the lines are blurry.
Nu Metal: I gotta disagree with you on this: It generally leans more towards a metal direction in my opinion (Even if its accessable or not) but some bands adventure out into more of a rap rock thing which is different sure but I would still personally call it metal. You can still be a metal band and have some songs that aren't metal songs.
Screamo, emo, post hardcore: It comes from a punk background so I would call it more punk than metal. Screamo/scramz whatever you wanna call it is literally just a combination of hardcore PUNK and post HARDCORE/emo. No metal to be seen, at least in the beginning of the genre. Some bands haven't heard a metal song in their lives they just hear chiodos or whatever and work off that, that's not metal, its its own thing. Once time went on and bands mixed it with metalcore and I would personally call some those bands metal, but the overall genre(s) themselves, far from it.
DGD: I agree you on that one, they are a post hardcore band through and through
Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull definitely influenced some early metal but they are 100% rock, I don't not get people calling them metal whatsoever. Some people say Deep purple and Black Sabbath are kinda more of a proto-metal thing, l but if I listen to it, I just hear hard rock.
I would still call new bring me the horizon, I see stars, architects and asking Alexandria metal, not sure why, what is the distinction there, but it just feels right to say that for some reason.

The thing about grunge is that it’s not really a genre. It’s a movement with a lot of common elements such are drop tuned guitars, and a slow sludgy sound, but made up of three main distinct genres.
*Hard Alternative:* (Like Nirvana) Derived from Alternative/College Rock but combined with influences from Punk and Metal, giving it a more aggressive, distorted, sound compared to traditional Alternative Rock such as REM & U2. This genre was first popularized by Pixies & Jane’s Addiction, and would go on to become one of, if not the most defining genre’s of the early 90’s
*Alt Classic:* (Like Pearl Jam) Combines alternative rock with traditional classic and hard rock creating a bluesy alternative sound
*Alternative Metal* (Like Alice In Chains and Early Soundgarden) Combines Traditional Heavy Metal with Sludge Metal and Alternative Rock, creating a slow, dark, heavy, sludgy sound with chugging power chord based riffs on drop tuned guitars.
What this means is that whilst the majority of the bands from the alternative movement were definitely not metal, even if a lot of them were influenced by it, Alternative Metal bands such as the aforementioned AIC and Early Soundgarden as well as HELMET and TOOL very much were.

Wow, another great video! So much to unpack here. Firstly, Jethro Tull is my favorite band of all time, and they're definitely not metal. They got sh*t in the metal press when their Crest of a Knave won the Grammy for best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal album (I believe the next year they split it into two separate awards). They're one of the most important prog/aor bands who've changed their style every few years, but they started as a rhythm and blues band. I think of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple as two of the biggest influences on the direction of metal (Robert Plant and Ian Gillan's vocals, Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord's virtuosity), but I believe it's the persona, themes and sound (thanks to Iommi's detuned guitar after he lost his fingertips in an industrial accident) that make Sabbath the first "metal" band. As with glam and nu metal, like you said it depends on the bands. Finally, grunge struck me as a reaction to glam much like the punk of the Sex Pistols was a reaction to prog bands like Pink Floyd. While I never got into grunge, I felt that Alice In Chains was definitely closer to metal than say Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Finally, I'll leave you with my favorite metal/hardcore punk crossover band Znous from Tunisia. Their political message is firmly entrenched in punk, while their sound moves back and forth between the genres. If you don't them, check them out at Znousland.net (or Bandcamp).

I'd to say Rammstein is metal because they have a bit of variety of metal and rock to their style. Other then industrial metal their also called Neue Deutsche Härte, Tanz metal (Dance metal) metal that's just catchy enough to dance too. Now it's harder to judge other's like KMFDM Eisbreacher and Megaherz since they have a lot more of a EDM style and isn't as raw as Rammstein when it comes to other German industrial bands with a similar style. Author & Punisher may not be metal ( I can't really tell) but they''re freaking raw with their Godflesh influenced style.

    My two cents:
Nu metal is metal, just listen to it. Glam metal is metal. There's a difference between glam rock and glam metal. Glam rock is Bon Jovi, Glam metal is W.A.S.P..
Metalcore is metal. Weird hybrid metal is metal (much as I can't stand Sleep Token).
Emo is not metal and hardcore is not metal, they are evolutions of punk. Grunge isn't metal, you can make your case about Kurt Cobain liking Metallica and that shit but Michael Jackson also liked Metallica so you can't really say shit. Grunge is the sound of 90's Seattle Rock, just like Sweden has their own death metal sound. That's it.
Crossover thrash is definitely metal but some are way more punk than others (e.g. Suicidal Tendencies), but I'd still call that metal. Grindcore is a similar thing but I think I'd call it metal as well. I don't listen to much grindcore though, it's so far removed from my taste ha ha.
Zeppelin and Purple are hard rock, so is Tull and Thin Lizzy and UFO and Aerosmith and Night Sun and what have you. They were super important in developing the heavy metal sound but heavy metal has to have, heaviness, you know?
Also, Primus aren't metal. I don't know why they're in the metal section in my local record shop. That's obscene if you think that.
I love the metal archives so much, it's my favourite website and a great community but the stuff they choose not to include is baffling. Grindcore and crossover thrash but not nu metal? Unscrupulous.
Love the Burzum shirt btw. I just recently got a Hvis Lyset Tar Oss hoodie and have been wearing it to bits. Have a good week! Been loving your stuff.

Glam is actually a really easy one, as there is both glam rock and glam meta. Glam rock isn't metal, glam metal obviously is. Motley Crue for example is glam metal, whereas Kiss is glam rock. Grunge itself isn't metal but rock, however bands like Alice in Chains are not pure Grunge and therefore skirt into the confines of metal. Similarly post grunge isn't metal, though I'm not really sure why you included Disturbed in there. Disturbed is a lot of things, some rock some metal, and thus very much in the metal category. Speaking of some of those things, Nu-Metal. Firstly Nu-Metal is the most misunderstood and misused sub-genre of metal. You gave examples of a bunch of bands and lumped them all into the Nu-Metal category, so I ask you this: what is the connective tissue between Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Korn, Slipknot and System of a Down? They play completely different music so I don't understand why so many people insist on lumping them together into the same style.
You asked what I would call Korn, well, Korn *is* Nu-Metal, they invented the sound of the sub-genre. Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park(well, their earlier works that is) are very much metal, just not Nu-Metal but instead Rap-Metal. Slipknot has a few elements of Nu-Metal in some of their albums but aren't really a Nu-Metal band. Similarly Disturbed has these same elements of Nu-Metal, most famously in their song(and to a lesser extent album): Down with the Sickness. However Disturbed too isn't fully Nu-Metal. Heck Korn themselves transitioned away from Nu-Metal in their later albums. Still the sound of Korn's earlier albums is what defines Nu-Metal as a sub-genre rather than a scene/movement or whatever. System of a Down by the way is the quintessential Alternative-Metal band, arguably the founding fathers of the sub-genre.
As far as the OGs, they're not metal per se but Proto-Metal, as in before metal or the precursors of metal. I wouldn't include Jethro Tull in that list by the way, they're very much progressive-rock. I would however add the band Queen as they are just as Proto-metal as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, as well as some other lesser known bands like Sir Lord Baltimore or Dust. Lastly, it's funny that you joked about Opeth but they very changed their styles a lot. First they dropped the death part of their classic progressive death metal sound in Heritage, than arguably dropped the metal aspect altogether in the following 2 albums and became much more of a progressive rock band more than anything else than in their last album they kind of tried to return into the realms of metal, though still without the death aspect.

I wouldn't agree with Grunge being the "the most metal adjacent non-metal genre" tbh, it's hardcore IMO. Yeah it's originally an offshoot of punk, but a significant portion of hardcore since the mid-90's or so mostly leans into thrash or groove metal, and more recently death metal influences. A lot of modern hc sounds more like Sepultura or early Machine Head than Bad Brains or Minor Threat. Not even talking about metalcore either cos most of this stuff is considered just hardcore.

Nu Metal is defined by the riffs, wich are influencd by Helmet, but a lot more darker and even more low tuned.

Don't forget Prong kind of influenced a bit of them too in the industrial metal and Nu metal seen.

For example everybody think ACDC are a metal band , but they're just rock , and more closed to punk if we think about any muisical s 'influences they have , to my thinking

Baffled that people consider DGD metal. Only thing that I guess could be called metal are the harsh vocals.

      @TheMetalTempestYT  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah! They definitely have some harsher vocals on the rough side compared to other post-hardcore bands but even then, it's a stretch haha

But a bunch of sleep token songs are just rnb or piano stuff then for 20/30 seconds it’s I guess Metal then goes straight back to the piano stuff

I don't understand how you can think Sleep Token or Alt metal in general are metal only to say grunge isn't.

      @TheMetalTempestYT  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's all a matter of basing it off of what most definitions call metal or not, or the building blocks. I've included many grunge bands within metal videos/topics as I personally think it's the most adjacent, haha.

I mean, I clearly stated I don't care what you think is or isn't and it's more based around the history of bands. I'm anti gatekeep, anti elitist, anti purist in any form :p

Led Zeppelin is hard rock, not metal.
Grunge is a subgenre of rock, not metal.
Nu Metal, even though "metal" is in the name, is actually a subgenre of rock. I know, it's kinda misleading.
Bring Me The Horizon and Sleep Token are both disgraces to metal, so they don't belong to that music genre either for solely that reason.

Grunge is NOT Metal-adjacent. It is directly opposite of any genre of metal. They all openly opposed and tried to belittle Metal and its fans.

Metal-adjacent in being one of the best to rival a lot of the intensity! :] should clarify that.
