Its the auxiliary dialogue that didn't have anything to do with the shark and the terrorisation that it caused, that made it somewhat entertaining; that's what made it seem more realistic,
Plus as strong a character Quint was, the film didn't become about him; a lot of stuff about the character is hinted and brief,
The film remained focused on the main character, which is the shark itself,
No character stole the show entirely, it is one of the few films where all characters shared their point of view,
Every character was the leading role, apart from the 🦈... The main Antagonist, Jaws 🦈 was the Leading Role, a shark
That was one of the many things that made Jaws great

"It's Shaw, the obsessively masculine fisherman, who thinks he's got to prove himself by fighting the shark practically single-handed. The high point of the film's humor is in our seeing Shaw get it; this nut Ahab, with his hypermasculine basso-profundo speeches, stands in for all the men who have to show they're tougher than anybody. The shark's cavernous jaws demonstrate how little his toughness finally adds up to." - Pauline Kael

Its ironic how Quint was being an asshole to Hooper in his workshop, breaking his balls, but when onboard the Orca he is so nice to him,
When Quint is up the look out post, and tells Brodie to put out another chum marker, Brodie says why not have Hooper take a turn, to which Quint says
'Hooper drives the boat Chief' even when the Orca isn't even needed driven,
'Stop playing with yourself Hooper!' xD
Hooper being a lazy bum playing cards and Quint just lets him, spoiling him,
'Quint, if we can get close enough, I got things onboard that can kill him.'
'Yes, we can use them, come on....'
Think Quint was being hard on Hooper to test him, to see if he has the mettle, because it was probably how he was treated on the USS Indianapolis by Senior Officers

During the filming Dreyfuss and Shaw wanted to murder each other, I like to think this helped aid in the tensions between their characters during scenes. On that note I highly recommend going to see the play "The Shark Is Broken" it details what would go on behind the scenes between the three actors whilst waiting for filming to start up and it stars Robert Shaws son Ian Shaw playing his dad (with an almost frighteningly uncanny resemblance I might add)

    • @763kjm

      @@timidhobgoblin207
I wouldn't think there was tension between the characters of Quint and Hooper; the only time there was tension was in the workshop scene, where Quint is breaking Hooper's balls, testing his mettle,
But after that, Quint was mostly nice to Hooper, but the actors were known to hate each other, so to come across as if they got on well when in character, that is very good acting skills,
I fucking love Jaws, it is one of the best films ever made, no remakes!!! Enhancement of dating special effects acceptable

The combination of Brody striding out of frame and Quint's matter-of-fact professionalism signal that this film has now kicked into high gear: the hunt is afoot. He most certainly was! Jaws would have been a flop without Robert Shaw. I hated it when he died. (Both on screen and in real life.) I wonder sometimes where his career might have taken him in the 80’s and 90’s. He might’ve been included in Jurassic Park. Maybe he would have been given a cool prime time show where he played a police detective. Eventually he would have dabbled in comedy and he and Richard Dreyfuss could have been in a sitcom, there are so many unrealized projects Robert Shaw could have participated in.

One thing I noticed is that while he messes with Brody a couple of times, Quint never insults him for not knowing his way around the boat, nor does he speak any ill towards his kids. Better than Luke/Han/Leia, better than Indy/Short Round/Willie, better than Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli or Frodo/Sam/Gollum, better than Thor/Rocket/Groot, better than Harry/Hermione/Ron, etc. Only team that might be better is Kirk/Spock/McCoy.
Brody, Hooper, and Quint just played off one another soooo beautifully, and were such perfect complements to each other as a trio. Quint's experience and roguish bravery, Brody's pragmatism and professionalism, Hooper's technical and scientific knowledge... Dream Team, man.

When I was a young kid watching Jaws, I used to roll my eyes and urge these scenes along... get me back to the shark! Now it's just the opposite. The shark is now just the delivery vehicle for the fascinating interplay of personalities... and the most fascinating of all is the way Quint, Brody, and Hooper all interrelate.

Someone on the Jaws staff had to be watching “All In The family” closely, because there’s a very strong “Archie and Meathead” element going on between Quint (Shaw) and Hooper (Dryfuss) there was tension between the actors behind the scenes and that was used so well in the movie with a strong AITF influence there.

@Jay Bray Eh it's more fucked up than Jaws Euphemisms for sex. The entire story was more of a gritty noire, but with sharks. Everyone even the "Heroes" were jerks. For example Vaughn wanted the beaches open because he was under mob pressure to do it. One of the people whom owned a beach front property was a mafioso who thought he could make more dollars the more people attend near his property. But what was really fucked up among the sea of gritty was why Ellen Brody fucked Hooper. Apparently a long time ago, she used to date Hooper's brother and fucking him was her own way of bringing back the good times she had with said brother.

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@clint45 I think in this case, because Hooper despite the beard is supposed to be the youngest of the cast. With Ellen and Martin being around 30 and Quint around 40 - 50, that she never thought the Shark Expert would be so young. Probably though the carpet matched the drapes.

So there is a deleted scene where Quints hired help refuses to go hunt the shark and quits. Although he helps quint prepare the ship, the deleted scenes explains why he was not with quint on the sea. When you watch the deleted scene, it surely was after quint takes the jaws out of the pan the first time and before he goes up the stairs. That’s why you hear him say “you can’t find a good man these days” as he walks up. Even though the scene is deleted, it doesn’t ruin the whole scene because quint is shown to be eccentric such as signing farewell and saying a poem about Brody’s wife before they leave. It actually fits his character and the audience sees it just as that. Anyway thanks for reading.
