    What I love about the new hybrid Toyotas is how nice they are to drive at any speed. You don't have to drive fast to have fun in this. They are on a class above any other hatchback

    Comments make me despair and laugh in equal measure on car videos. Why does everyone expect M3 performance out of every car these days ? I have a Subaru, its quite rapid but not as fast as a lot of other cars but it does what I need it to do, so I dont compare it to anything else, it doesnt concern me. This Yaris is great for its designed purpose. 0-60 times and top speeds are meaningless on public roads, and ANY car with ANY size engine can keep up and do the speed limit. The UK is filled with bad impatient drivers who simply don’t know how to drive properly.

    Is this good as a VW polo?

  • @lapamful
    @lapamful 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Had mine for a week and it's an absolute blinder, so full of character and very easy to drive. I do long journeys with it and am noticeably un-tired after my trips. I'm still in the break-in phase so am not pushing it too hard, no launch controls yet. But on flat surfaces once it's up to speed it feels like it wants to constantly go faster. Today I went above 80mph (130kph) and it still felt like it had a lot more to give. Totally unstressed.
    The only thing I don't understand is the 'B' gear. Unless you have a really long downhill stretch, you're never going to get the battery fully charged. I think it's a bit of a gimmick tbh. I just leave it in 'D' and it still charges the battery without slowing you down. The only real negative I'd give it is in driving uphill where all the power and enthusiasm seems to disappear, you have to rev the hell out of it to keep up with high speed traffic (at around 70mph/120kph) which I'm hesitant to do because as I said, I'm still in the break-in phase. Can't wait to see what it does when I can push it to the max.
    Nice driving btw!

    • @jousis_
      @jousis_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      B does not charge the battery faster. Actually, it depletes it in order to spin up the engine and use it as an extra brake for long downhills.
      So, you spend energy in order to save your hydraulic brakes from frying.
      How do you like the torque on low speeds/rpms ?
      Easy to start and roll uphill on battery or it needs to start the petrol engine?

    • @lapamful
      @lapamful 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jousis_ Ah, yes I think you're right. Silly me. That makes much more sense, B also stands for 'Brake'. Then again, they also said 'B' was for recharging at the Toyota dealers too! Lol will have to tell them.
      For the torque, it depends. You can certainly move off with the EV and it's fine. But moving off at speed and I find the engine kicks in which is quite noisy.
      Also, there's this other weird thing (maybe it's the way the CVT works), but when speeding up with the engine revving like mad, I find you actually get more power if you lift off the throttle then gentle re-apply the gas and then it's a much more relaxed affair. The engine doesn't rev so much (but you somehow get more power). It's like as if it goes up a gear when you lift off and re-apply the throttle and that higher gear has more torque and power.
      As much as I think the Yaris punches way above its weight in certain respects, I think I'll just keep it as a city car for the most part, and use it for the occasional hoon.

    • @jousis_
      @jousis_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lapamful thanks. I live in a city with hills, traffic, traffic lights, all the good stuff :D .
      And small petrol engines are very tiring and boring to drive (I have polo 1lt currently and I hate it).
      The extra torque from the MG2 might be what I need in low speed situations.
      Not totally sold on e-CVT yet though...

    • @lapamful
      @lapamful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jousis_ Oh, well if you're comparing the Yaris to a 1lt Polo, the Yaris will destroy the Polo. I just had a little hoon with a Hyundai Veloster (damned ugly things), and in the twisties the Veloster wasn't able to keep up. But guess where he passed me? Going uphill lol I think Velosters are about 180hp?
      But I'm a big believer in bigger engines are better. If you had a Polo GTI drive behind you on your daily rounds, I'm certain the GTI would be more fuel efficient.

    • @jousis_
      @jousis_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lapamful I had an ibiza 1.8lt 20VT (vw group) back in the day. That thing could start with 4th gear and still spin the wheels.
      But in my city (Athens, GR), it was not economical at all ,the taxes were rising, new EU laws about emissions came,...
      And since I drive like a granny generally, I sold it.
      After that, no petrol engine satisfied me.
      EV infrastructure is not good yet here (public charging stations are few, slow and very expensive), so thinking about a small hybrid as a interim solution.
