This was the first whisky that got me into scotch. It opened up a whole new world of whisky to me. I love the creamy finish The Glenlivet leaves behind. Totally agree with you on the ABV percentage. It's right where it needs to be.
I haven't had this in a while... It was my second single malt ever after Glenfiddich... The first time must have been more than thirty-two years ago. I was working in a supermarket, and it was Winter. I was telling a co-worker about this amazing stuff called Glenfiddich 12, and he pointed me to Glenlivet 12... Thanks for bringing back a memory.
What Scotch gives you the most nostalgia? Also: Sorry for the audio on the pen pineapple apple pen thing. I was editing after several drinks and thought it was funny.
So happy I discovered this channel. I'm currently 25, never been a heavy drinker, but really appreciated whiskey. Jack Daniels being my first introduction, Jameson later on. Having drank those whiskeys in different ways (and enjoying the fuck out of them, establishing whiskey as my go to alcohol of choice. Banishing vodka, until eventually sharing a Moscow Mule with a very special young woman. ) I ordered a shot of whiskey for my best friend, the way I went about it was asking the bartender what was the best whiskey they had, it was a Machalan Scotch Whiskey 12 years, the shot was $20. My friend's expression convinced me to purchase a bottle of it for his birthday, and we drank it at the beach. So again thank you sir for this channel. I like the merch. Keep up the great work! Also what kind of whiskeys (brand) are great for an old fashioned?
For an old fashioned... I typically like a high corn bourbon but thats just me. I also like it with a high rye bourbon. Try redemption rye if you have it around. Its inexpensive
New to Scotch Whisky. Starts out sweet and a little tart, then has a alcohol burn finish in my palate. Lasting maybe 35 -40 seconds then it fades. Very nice experience. Yes, may have another? 😎
I've always felt that Glenlivet is to Scotch what Jack Daniels is to American whiskey; it's readily available/accessible, no harsh notes, doesn't do anything spectacular either, but just a solid, mainstream pick.
Fair... though, that goes without saying considering the difference in "genre" of whiskeys. While Johnnie Walker Red might be a better comparison to Jack Daniels, the Glenlivet is more ubiquitous than the Red in any bar worth its salt.
I love your videos! Thank you so much. I have been a Bourbon drinker for years. I watched this video on The Glenlivet 12, as well as others. I went out and bought a bottle, and I am very impressed. I never would have thought I would be into Scotch. I always thought Scotch was too expensive, or too much of an acquired taste. I loved this whiskey from the first sip. Now I want to try other kinds Scotch. Monkey Shoulder is on my list. Thanks for helping me decide what to spend my money on, and learning the fun facts behind the brands and types.
Thats awesome! I'm glad youre enjoying the videos. I have a video I've been planning on scotch that bourbon drinkers should move to. (Better title to come) so I should have some better ideas for you coming soon!
Love when you talk about the history of the brand. Glenfiddich 12 or 15, Elijiah Craig Small Batch, Highland Park 12, Caol Ila 12, Mccallan 12, Hibiki Harmony....PLEASE REVIEW THESE WHEN YOU HAVE THE CHANCE.
Hi Bill , this comment is a little later , sorry about that !! Scotchtober !! I like it , don`t forget The Dalmore , great history behind the scotch. Shifting gears a bit , maybe in Nov. ( when Scotchtober is over ) you could do a review of Tin Can American Whiskey. Thanks for the video and have a great weekend , Gary
I'm just getting started in the world of whisky and as in Spain the one we drink most often is Scotch, I thought it would be a good way to start by following your list of Scotch recommendations. I think I'll be more familiar with them. The thing is that I have a bottle of Glenlivet Founder's Reserve and I don't think it's worth buying another one of Glenlivet 12. What do you think? Are there big differences between them?
I went to my local liquor store about 2 weeks ago with the intent of buying Glenlivet 12.....end up getting the 1824 because it was on sale, and $12 cheaper. Big mistake. The 1824 isn't bad, but it's sweet, and too subtle for me. I'm no connoisseur, but I prefer something a little more robust. Glenfiddich 12 for a daily dram, or Talisker 10 for a bit of a punch! Would be interested to hear your opinion on the 1824. Great channel, thanks!!
If you had to recommend a fairly cheap branded whiskey (preferably a scotch as I'm from Scotland) what would you recommend? Something with minimum alcohol burn. Just want to try my first whiskey
Founders reserver is meh for the price i would say, The 12yo is in the same price range, so totally better to go with 12 and I am not a fan of whiskey too old but you should try 15yo for sure. Brilliant stuff. Love your story telling as always!!
thank you! being a newbie i bought the 200 cl sample pack containing the 12, 15 and 18 for cdn $79 in BC...so even if it doesn't wow me not a huge investment. my first scotch (1 mo ago) was the highland park 12...love the different flavours and tobacco on the end. question: the hp 18 is 2.5x the price of the 12....have you tried it and is it worth that huge price jump?
I actually bought a 375 mL earlier today since I've had the other uber popular Glenfiddich 12 and Macallan 12 multiple times but strangely never this. To me, it's a good starter Scotch but very overpriced along with Glenfiddich and Macallan. Usually you'd think that rarity controls price, but it's annoying that these mammoth Scotch brands with unparalleled accessibility and marketing are around the same price as Islay whisky in my state (NC). The 375 mL was $24, and the 750 mL is $48 for Glenfiddich and Glenlivet and $55 for Macallan Double Cask Gold. I know these prices are higher than average in the U.S. but I can get Monkey Shoulder, Tomatin 12, Chivas Regal 12, Dewar's 12, Glen Moray 12, Glenrothes 10, and more under $40. I guess the convoluted point of my mini-rant is I'd suggest buying this at bars over buying a personal bottle because you can buy this anywhere at any time. But I agree nostalgia plays a part in preference.
Probably not. I just checked that one out, I'm going for slightly nicer whiskies. Next week is bowmore. Then probably glenmorangie and laphroaig. At least that's what I'm thinking now
I started a Scotch taste with The Glenlivet 12 in the 90's and 00's it was still a bit rare. Since it's popularity I feel as though Glenlivet12 has fallen a bit in quality and complexity. I would recommend trying Glenfiddich 12 or Laphroaig 10 yr and compare. All are available at reasonable cost. if you like Whisky or Scotch Whisky try Glenfiddich 18 at an approachable price. That said, there is nothing wrong with a bottle of Glenlivet 12 in your bar.
Thanks for another great review, sir. I suppose i’ll finally sub (sorry lol.) also, bowmore 15 blech so peaty. i’m gonna stick to my non peated scotches lol
My birthday is next Saturday the 13th. I'm really thinking about picking this up! but ill wait to see your thoughts on the Bowmore 15 before I buy anything or should I wait until the end of the month? Ugh tough life decisions here! HA This is my wifes youtube account XD just realized that
nope! 25! i got into whiskey late last year during the deployment and your channel stood out. This is Tyler by the way I'm gonna switch back to my other account lol
Im no scotch expert for sure but the 1st real scotches i ever had were Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. To me both are super stout and taste like straight up oak tree. Like i said i know jackshit about Irish whiskey which one do you prefer?
I always compare whiskys on the same price point and I compare Glenlivet with Glengoyne, Gentleman Jack and Glenfidich. To me the Glenlivet is the weakest of these 4, with Gentleman Jack and Glengoyne being more easy to drink and Glenfidich having way more aroma.
I have to disagree with you about the ABV. This one noses very well, but for me it's watery and goes completely flat on the palate. So much unrealized promise. Glenlivet (by virtue of independent bottlings I've tried) really can make a great whisky. This one is simply dumbed (too far) down for the masses, IMO.
Full disclosure: the thumbs-down is mine. Like many TH-cam "viewers," I often have the videos playing in the background while working and don't actually view the content, and today's Pen-Pineapple volume spike had me frantically trying to mute the laptop and search through numerous open browser windows to see which one suffered an audio popup attack. Then I realized it came from your video. Oof.
This was the first whisky that got me into scotch. It opened up a whole new world of whisky to me. I love the creamy finish The Glenlivet leaves behind. Totally agree with you on the ABV percentage. It's right where it needs to be.

Lagavulin 16, had a dram from my VERY generous older brother- I think I cried a little.
The pen pineapple was funny lol.
Clan Macgregor! You should try a bottom shelf tasting for those of us who are poor for middle/top shelf.

Best starter scotch for me. As you leave it more in the glass after pouring, smelling more like cremebulee.
Great background story adds to the interesting video. Thanks!
I've always felt that Glenlivet is to Scotch what Jack Daniels is to American whiskey; it's readily available/accessible, no harsh notes, doesn't do anything spectacular either, but just a solid, mainstream pick.
I'd say it's more like Makers Mark. JD is a little rudimentary imo compared to what Glenlivet 12 gives you.
Fair... though, that goes without saying considering the difference in "genre" of whiskeys.
While Johnnie Walker Red might be a better comparison to Jack Daniels, the Glenlivet is more ubiquitous than the Red in any bar worth its salt.
For me, Glenlivet 12 is the best scotch you can get for the money.
Just recently bought my in-laws a bottle of Glenlivet 12 when they bought new house! Great way to celebrate!
Nice :)

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Excellent! I am looking forward with keen interest.
How would you compare this to the Glenfiddich 12?
The Glenfiddich has a peat smoky flavor.
@@jamesguthrie9238 could you describe the smell of peat & smoky peat? Never smelled the stuff as it doesn't occur in Oz. Thanks
Not as good..

A Great starter scotch and an easy background sipper, to me a little boring but still tasty. Quintessential speyside esp for the price!
very good scotch paired with cadbury chocolate!
Hi Bill, great review
Could you give your top 5-10 rye whiskey under 40 usd?
Thanks you in advice
I'll probably do some top 5 coming up pretty soon. If you want to watch my intro to ride most of those are under 40
Glenlivet is a decent whisky and well worth the price if its on sale!
