The favorite whiskey of my now deceased uncle - who was a fisherman. The perfect christmas gift for him ;-)
The Glenlivet 12 Illicit Still or Licensed Dram is great
Never thought Eric will review GL12. Kudos for including something that most single malt folks have tasted and started on. I also did not think you will give it a solid 85. I though u ll give it 80 - that if you are in a good mood.
Everyone should have 10yo Glenmorangie, 12 Glenfiddich and this on their shelf to reset their taste buds every so often and realise how much better other stuff actually is.
That is a matter of opinion. Many people like the ones you mentioned more than “other” ones. It is all a matter of perspective, as well as what one is in the mood for at any given time.
I agree with you, especially about the Glenmorangie.
I agree fully with you. I'd forgotten that I like Glenlivet 12 til I was out in California and the only scotches they had were Glenfiddich 18 and Glenlivet 12. It was on my dime and just grabbing a drink before the event we were out there for and for the cost its a solid whisky. I put it in the same taste profile as Macallan's 12 and Glen Grant 12 and the price differential sells it. It's an everyday single malt that if you don't finish you're not worried about wasting it. Plus if you're introducing someone to a slate of profiles that's a good list. Classic Laddie should be added to that list. Funny note is I have the 15 and the 18 and must have killed the 12 fifteen years ago or more so I restocked at Sams Club. 34 bucks. Problem is you can go so far down the rabbit hole that you forget to appreciate the ones that introduced you to this path.
I think you were generous with your appraisal Erik. I'm not a fan, in fact I really dont like it. My wife likes it so it has a place in the bar.
I always think if you get 1l you will pay less, but your prices are crazy. Got this one sitting on my shelf for a while now. Haven't opened it yet
I picked up a bottle of this a couple years ago for one reason…to compare it with the Illicit Still 12. Thought it would be educational to compare the same malt to an NCF, 48% version. It was. The Illicit Still was clearly superior (and CHEAPER at the time of you can believe that). But the second thing that stood out to me was that the regular 12 didn’t suck. It’s a decent whisky, warts and all. Clean, malty, fruity, simple, friendly…just rather boring as my palate has evolved. Won’t ever buy it, but won’t turn down a dram offered!
great Lewis Black impression. Scotch on Bayou said basically the same last Tuesday it's the cask and contents. Who got you going off the rails? Maybe we should have a book burning.
Glenlivet 12 was the first whiskey I enjoyed. I would give it a solid 80-85 as well. There are more interesting whiskies, to be sure, but the 12 is always enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing!
Probably most people’s gateway scotch along with Glenmorangie 10 and Glenfiddich 12. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Glenlivet 12 simplemente fue el primero,el que creo el standat de como debe ser un whisky single malt,su fundador también tuvo que ver con Glenfarclas y Macallan, sin duda un hombre genial.
¡Gracias!
Here in PA it's $61.39 for the 750 ml.
YIKES! That is what CA pays for a 750!
I think he means 'preprandial', a drink before dinner.
Nope, Google it. An aperitif is "an alcoholic drink taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite."

Did you know that 2 words, depending on context and culture, can mean the same thing? Sometimes it because they have different etymological roots.
It would take a spectacular discount for me to buy this and i can get a high biscuisity deanston virgin oak for £30 witch is superior in every way other than age statement but so many better and cheaper 12 year old malts with similar profiles available .
Throw that list out. Always willing to try something I may have overlooked.
If I have to rate..I would rate glenmorngie 10,then Glenlivet 12 then Glenfiddich 12
Hi Erik, will you be trying the 200 year anniversary 12yo bottle?
Everything I am doing now is preparation for Master of Scotch exams in April 2024. So, unless it could be on an exam and be I'd expected to be able to identify it I'm not buying it.
C Is a fair grade.
I’ve had the 12 year old many times.
It’s a speyside not a highland
Legally it can go either way. Speyside is a sub-region of the Highlands. For example, the Macallan is in Speyside but labels its bottles as Highland. While Glenlivet is commonly referred to as "The archetypal Speyside dram" if you Google "Glenlivet 12 Year Old" you will see retailers referring to it as Highland but the label does not say either Highland or Speyside. I toured the distillery in June 2018. If you are ever there, check it out.
The worst malt I've ever had is Glenlivet founders reserve. So bad that when i was gifted it i didn't even forward it on to my malt novice freinds because i didn't want to put them totally off malt whisky ! It was so thin and acrid like a very cheap and nasty white wine .
...mmmmm cheap nasty white wine, perfect for drinking under a freeway overpass in my grocery cart.
@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies yep , we've all been there right .🥴😉
