    I personally use external hard drive and I personally think its the best. It helps me feel more secure in that I have all my music and nothing is missing, and I don't get that feeling that I'm forgetting something. I personally use the "Western Digital My Passport Ultra 2TB" It can hold about 700,000 songs. I personally download from DJ City's record pool, and download it straight to my external hard rive. From there I transfer the music from the hard rive onto serrate crates and have different genre crates.

    Just make sure to back up your music on your internal hard drive and 2 more back ups on external. Share rare stuff with friends in case you lose the rare songs it's a great back up!

    I keep my entire music collection on my home computer which I use to practice on and then when I go to a particular gig I will transfer the folders/tracks I want to play that night onto a USB. This way I don't carry all of my music but still am able to carry a decent amount on my USB

    Hello!!! I salute you from Costa Rica!!!
    I'm DJ for 15 years (and counting), and I comment to you about the music storage. For only music (mp3's, m4a's or similars), I prefer to play directly from the PC (in my case), because I have a good HD and I don't have problems with it. But for some DJ's who use old computers, I know that they use external hard drive for music because the quality from external HD is better and faster than the internal. So, it depends at the case of each one.
    So I'm playing video too, and for this case I prefer an external HD because the video files are considerably bigger than audio files (for example, a 4 minutes song size at 320 kbps bitrate 9 Mb aprox., and the video from this 4 minutes song, if is 1080p HD [mp4] in low bitrate compression can size 60-80 Mb [7-9x bigger], so if the bitrate is higher like the reel HD videos, the file can sizes about 300-500 Mb, or if you have videos on dvd quality [vob / mpeg2], a 4 minutes video can size about 150-250 mb; all this depend about the compression qualitiy, the birtrate and the color [black and white or low saturated color video size little less than a full color video with same render setup]). In this case too, I use an USB 3.0 HD for faster loading (my computer has usb 3.0 ports).

    I use an external Hard Drive. Here in Brazil a new Macbook is really expensive, about R$4000,00 a macbook air 11", so I use a Late 2007 Macbook Black with internal 120Gb SSD, so I use an external HDD through my Firewire port. I'm a mobile DJ, using Traktor, and in the gigs I've played it worked really good! Runs smooth on Firewire.

    I usually download on to my mac desk top and then drag into my wd 1tb hdd back up and the wd hdd that I use to gig. I keep my macbook completely empty so it runs at it's best. The only time my mac even sees the internet is when I'm updating my serato dj software. My hard drive has over 500 gigs of music but I really only use it when I'm gigging somewhere that may ask for requests from any genre and any year like weddings where there will be older and younger people. Most of the time(especially in the clubs and lounges) I use a small 128 gig sansdisk flash drive. It pretty much has everything I use the most.

    • @SmoothBlendzTV
      @SmoothBlendzTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I just use the hd specifically for the gigs. I keep no music on my macbook. Not even in itunes. When I play at clubs and lounges I use the lil 128 gig flashdrive. I keep everything that I use most plus all the current stuff on that one.

    • @SmoothBlendzTV
      @SmoothBlendzTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** When it's a gig I organize a crate or 2 for the gig depending on what kind of gig and if the people that hired me sent me a specific track list. In the clubs I use a ton of crates and add on accordingly like you said. I mostly freestyle when I'm playing in the clubs but I have small made up sets that I throw in. One thing I do when I'm gigging at the clubs I make a crate called Not Played Yet. It will be a crate with different sub crates of the different genre's of music that i haven't played yet or haven't played in a while. when you're a dj you tend to sometimes do the same sets with the same music and if you're a resident you can't do the same thing every week. So I make those crates every week and eventually you make enough of them that you can start freestyling using all the crates you've made. Hope this helps.

    I use a 13" MBP 2012 (500 gig hard) for my gigs with Traktor Scratch(with 1200's) pro, my previous Windows laptop had a 1TB harddrive. I upgraded the MBP to 1TB myself (TH-cam helped me haha). I use about three external hardrives as backup but never use them when I perform. I download music mostly straight to a Windows PC and transfer it to my MBP later and as well back up on my harddrive(s). I play mostly old school and I still buy CD's and vinyl. I also purchase music using ITunes. No record pools for me except the free ones. I don't like ripping CDs using my MBP using ITunes, so I would use a Windows PC or laptop for this purpose. I record vinyl using my MBP but do the cleaning up of the files in Windows and transfer it back to MBP. I use mostly uncompressed WAVs files and currently have take about 500 gig music on my MBP to gigs. So the 1 TB hard drive is not under strain and the MBP is running smoothly. I keep my music organised using playlists in Traktor. For special gigs I would create special playlists and it saves time and reduces stress as I don't have to search for tracks during a gig.

    Hey, I'm a beginner dj and I was wondering when it would be a good time to start scratching during a gig, weather it would be at the start or towards the end? Thanks for all the information and continuous help and support for beginners.

    • @elliottg7192
      @elliottg7192 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      practice at home, don't scratch during a gig without any experience

    • @integrity2719
      @integrity2719 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not every gig is a "scratch-able" gig. So it really depends on what you do as well as how well you are at any kind of scratching. If you have already practiced and recorded yourself scratching and feel that it sounds clean and presentable then go for it, but still KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. A person with great abilities in scratching could still mess up the vibe if the audience is not into it or appreciate it as much. So before when to scratch is a concern, first know the audience. Then as far as when is a good time, that's basically on preference in my opinion. You could always check out a lot of DJs mixes and see when they do it and see if you like their timing, but mostly that's all up to each individual DJ. Hope that helps.

    In regards to external hard drives, if your laptop has an optical drive consider swapping it out with a hard drive caddy which can hold your 2nd drive safely internally and run at of full and faster speeds than USB drives can offer, particularly USB 2.0. having your music on the same drive as the OS can slow things down at times if background processes are running. Thumb drives can only run as fast as the USB controller can relay data wether it's 2.0 or the newer USB 3.0 neither of which ever run at the claimed capable speeds, an internal drive will plug into an internal Sata port which is more consistent at delivering high rates of data which is what we DJs with our extended mix versions of songs encoded at 320kbs truly need.

    I use external HDs. One plus is if your computer crashes or is dropped, you still have your music available. I download to a 2T HD and then distribute to two other HDs (one for backup), the other to play. I use a PC.

    In regards to using an internal/external. If using external I suggest an HD at 7200rpms 3.0 USB, or and HD with Thunderbolt transfer. If internal and you're not using an SSD, the minimum Local HD speed I'd use is 7200. I made the mistake of getting a 1TB internal HD and didn't check the RPMs. Sure enough it was at 5400 RPMs and Slow as Hell.

    RE: External Hard Drives. The real compelling reason to use these as a DJ is that you can clone your drives and if there happens to be a failure of a drive (power fails, data corruption) then you can swap that out and you are back in business quickly. Otherwise you would have to resort to your backup laptop which of course any DJ should have, but the external gives you more flexibility.
    As for speed, USB 3.0 drives are quite fast and now that they are ubiquitous the prices are a no-brainer. You can get a 2TB military grade spec shock proof drive for sub $100.

    I download and organize my music on my (PC) desktop then copy it over to an external drive for my macbook pro. I honestly never had a problem with this. I would put my music directly on my laptop if I didn't use it for video production. I would recommend just to have one organized library so you don't have to keep backing it up every time you download new music.

    Hi,
    First of all thank you for your videos, they are very useful and interesting. I learned so much watching them.
    Secondly I had a gig last night and the worst think that can happen to a Dj happened to me. My speakers died.
    So I decided to invest in proper sound system. I would like to know what kind of speaker you can recommend me (i was thinking about the pioneer pro dj60x), and do you recommend me as well to use an additional sub or the speakers themselves would be enough ?
    Thanks

    On my computer I keep the main genres I specialize in, which are older House music and Latin music, also I keep approximately 20-30 top hits (some with special transitions) from other genres organized in crates by genre and the year of the song. the rest I keep on my 1tb ssd external hard drive. For security reasons, I also have a second external ssd hard drive to back up my main external drive...just in case. I believe it's best to have a good amount of music on your cpu just in case your external hard drive glitches it could save you as a last ditch effort to recover. Thanks all

    Make sure your external HD is 7200 rpm.most are not. The higher the number the faster it sends info to your program. 5600 rpm will load slower in serato. You want your track to be on deck as soon as you choose it. I use G-Technology G-DRIVE mobile 1TB USB 3.0 7200 RPM External Drive (0G02874) amazon $100

    External harddrives shouldn't effect the speed of the software. My personal opinion is download the software too your internal harddrive which would keep the problems and bugs to a minimum. Keeping your music on an external HDD is entirely up to your preferences and to be fair, in some cases, it could be better. Think of it like this, if you store too much music on your laptop it will eventually begin to slow down whereas on an external harddrive it will not effect your laptops performance only the external harddrives performance. Another risk to consider is pulling the harddrive out of the usb socket but this is unlikely if you're careful enough. Using an external solid state drive will speed up processing but these can get expensive if you need a lot of gig. Hoped this helped in someway;) I am not a dj in anyway and am confused on how to get started but I am good with computers so I thought I could attempt to help a few people!

      I prefer having the software and my music on the laptop, but I make sure I don't put too many files on the harddrive. Some DJ's prefer to bring their whole collection. If that's the case, an external hdd would probably be better

For me I like to use an external hard drive just for: 1) I LOVE HAVING ALL MY MUSIC...and not forget a thing 2) Computer performance - HD should be used to run software 3) Just for emergency. I like to be able to use my crates on different computers and having an external drive gives me that option. I use a 4 drive NAS server to store all my music. I suggest everyone to buy one.

    I use 3 external hard drives. 2 are USB 3.0 which perform good but my best performance hardware wise comes from my FireWire hard drive. Thunderbolt is the best but because I sometimes use Serato Video and I need that port open.

    I always save my playlist with the audio file on it and i prefer to use my external hd with all the playlist i made just in case i need more music and if i do i know exactly where to find the songs that i need... In my case my computer run faster if i keep the internal hd with more freespace

    Well I had the same problem with record pools not having the updated music when it came to record pools. They always have old music from past years that are edit to have intro and an outro. Yea I myself is still looking for a record pool that has that new clean edit intro and outro for Mexican music since I live in Yuma, AZ. Record pools that I use for Mexican music BPM SUPREME & PROJECK JUNKIES

    Very good TLM I approve this message LMAO.. saluutes from Miami!!!. I want to share some info if it helps to some. If you are an Opem Format DJ playing long sets you definitely should bring with you all or most of your music, if you dj a set of like 1/2 hr, 1 or 2 hrs then you could be more specific about what to bring to the gig, but in my case I don't like to be messing too much with the music like transferring music to another computer and stuff. I have two external hard drives, one Seagate and the other is G Drive with almost 300 gigabites of music. One of them I use it as a back up in case I lose one or get it damaged or even stolen. I have all the music organized in different ways, by genres then subgenres, another way is music by countries, music by aritst when it's about very important and big artists, by type music for specific type of parties, etc...
    For now I use 1 apple computer to do it all, but I definitely recommend having two computers, one to do all the work to download the music and the other one keep it as clean as possible in the memory and use it only for the gigs.
    Peace!!!

    I have a dell XPS now there are some Lap Tops that have dual Hard Drives Bay. now I have my Primary C: Drive and the I keep all my music on my Secondary hard drive inside my lap top. now you can also buy a hard drive caddy that you can purchase on line and you can remove your DVD ROM and install a secondary hard drive with the Hard drive Caddy. that way I don't use the primary hard drive for my music! and it seems to load faster than an external hard drive!!!

    i also do a lot of latin parties record pools that i use are LO MAXIMO PRODUCTIONS & XTREME REMIX both have good new music remix and edits intros and outros ... cons with extreme is they send you one cd a month full of the music they put out also include top 40 edm & hiphop ... cons with LMP you can only access the pool by a program called TRANSIT if you have a mac you can't search for songs you'll be forced to search through folders and its hard to reach customer service at times ...

    I haven't switched to digital yet but I will as soon as I can afford a Rane 64. I plan on building a main performance computer in a rack mount computer case installed in a road case that has shock protection and is on wheels. There will actually be 3 computers in the road case. A main performance computer running with a SSD, an identical backup computer and a media or NAS server to house a complete music and music video collection that spans a 36 year career of DJing and music collecting and probably will have Karaoke files as well. The main and backup computers will only have the operating system, Serato video and the chrome browser for updates and in case I HAVE to download a song I don't have. These will be work computers, not for checking facebook or surfing porn. The only music it will contain are some emergency music crates including wedding specific music, Mitzvah specific music and Quinceañera specific music as well as the Mobile Beat 200 The NAS or server will have as many 2TB drives I can afford to stuff in it in a RAID 5 or 6.
    I'm just not sure a single laptop is trustworthy enough and like I said I have 36 years worth of music that I have accumulated (mostly on vinyl but CDs and DVDs as well so I need the storage. You really get high marks when you can play the bride's father's favorite jazz or 1950s country tune at the drop of a hat. With these computers protected in a road case that I can roll into the venue, its easy on me and I look uncluttered and professional. Just my ideas of creating a bulletproof system because I will not be the DJ that ruins a once in a lifetime event because I am not prepared and don't have backups.
    TLM, please do a video on the backups you bring when you are in charge of an event or what kind of backups you use for a club gig Have you ever had a computer crash in the middle of a gig?

    I stopped using external hard drives because Serato (at least once a week) would lose the files!!! Since, I've been using the Nifty Mini Drive (alternative is Transcend JetDrive)....
    So far, it's been flawless...

    In regards using external drives and speed:
    Unless you're using a SSD (like I am, and an insanely fast one), using an external device to play your music is, on average, going to be faster. However, when it comes to music, IT DOES NOT MAKE A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE. At all, actually. I've practiced with Traktor on my old HP Pavilion with a 3-year-old hard drive and it works just as well (assuming all things equal) as my HP Omen with a m.2 SATA SSD (the fastest type of storage you can get inside a laptop as of me typing this).
    If you're looking for an increase of speed in regards to how well Serato/Traktor works, worry about your processing power instead of your storage. Music files tend not to benefit much from faster storage, but I will say Traktor opens up insanely quick (and shuts down just as fast) thanks to my SSD (as does every other program). But none of that matters while you're DJ'ing. If anything you should probably have external hard drives with your collection stored on them as a back-up, like they said in one of the newer DJ City videos.
    Ripping off TH-cam:
    You can rip in high(ish) quality off TH-cam, so long as the video is HD. HD videos, at the most, are 256. I've seen them hover around 230-246 more often, though. If you don't care about the legality of it (to each their own), you can rip off TH-cam & SoundCloud at high-quality, but a record pool will make your life much easier (until you download everything like I've done :P)
