I 've always liked it when somebody actually had the determination to build the KA's in 240's. I follow monsta performance out of Florida and they have a KA-T s13.5 drift car that makes 500hp. KA is a good engine if built right.
Wow, this car is amazing, now one of my favorite review from you David. It shows if you put time and effort into something you can make it your own and very special.
The Ka24de in the 240sx was never used in a truck. The ka24de used in the 1998-2004 Frontier had enough differences to almost be considered a different engine family.
Ive always wondered what it would be like for someone to put forged internals in a KA and actually build it. Everyone just swaps their 240s, and i think this proves that you can build them.
@ThatDudeinBlue we actually did get the SR20 here in the States, the caveat is that we never saw the turbo version of that engine (SR20DET) but the naturally aspirated SR engines were available here in a number of Nissan vehicles. The Infiniti G20 (aka Nissan Primera), and the Nissan Sentra 200SX (aka Nissan Lucino. This is not to be confused with the European S-chassis 200SX, which is based on a Silvia) came with the SR20DE engine which makes 140hp at the crank, and can easily be built into a makeshift SR20DE+T with the huge amount of aftermarket mods that can be installed. The funny part about those 2 cars I mentioned is that they came with SR20 engines in the States but they were FWD as opposed to RWD. In addition you can get them with either an automatic or a manual, and they can be built up and hold a decent amount of power in stock form. I drive a 2016 Nissan Note, which was sold alongside the Versa platform in the States, and I’m currently saving up to buy a FWD SR20 engine to do a swap within a year or two. On their own, they aren’t that powerful or fast even. But the low cost of entry to afford one, and the abundant amounts of OEM parts availability, as well as the small size of the vehicle and a low curb weight (under 2500lbs) makes for an interesting platform to build a fast but reliable daily driver. People overseas in parts of Asia like Japan and Thailand do SR20DET engine swaps into their Nissan Almeras, which is just another name for the Versa overseas, and the stuff they come up with is absolutely incredible despite the lack of an actual aftermarket support system. You should find someone who has a FWD SR20 engine in their car and review it, and see how it stacks up to the RWD SR20. There was also an SR20 that came in Nissan cars with factory AWD in some parts of the world, so if you ever go to Canada, be on the lookout for someone with a Nissan X-Trail SUV or a Nissan Avenir, since those came with the SR20 engine and all wheel drive.
Yes. It's so overlooked because it's the stock motor, it's not "jdm", and considered a truck motor. But holy shit is a proper built ka-t so much fun to drive. I've had numerous setups on mine, 50 trim, 60-1, t28, 6466. And the spool on every turbo is so amazing. It's almost instant with the extra displacement. No knocking on the sr20s but I'll choose ka everyday.
I had a KA24DE-T S13 coupe and it was an absolute monster. Sounded better than the SR's and was much torquier and needed much less boost to make power. 325whp and 400 ft. lbs of torque on 9 lbs of boost (forged internals and a few other bolt-ons tuned on an APex'i SAFC-2.) 12 second car on street tires and much cheaper than the SR swaps all my other friends were doing.
I once sat in the passenger seat of a 500hp ka-t, 240sx fastback that runs 10 sec in the 1/4 mile. I went and picked up a clutch for my 240sx and he took me to the back roads, as he lives out in the country side of Wisconsin, and did a few runs down the stretch. By far, its the most powerful car that I've ever been in. That was 15yrs ago.

The motor sounds so good and smooth going through the rev range. The boost on that car comes on quick looks sounds like a car with a healthy 3.5-4k + worth of rpm in the boost. Love the ka24de as a street motor platform.
Everyone dismisses the KA series as a boring truck engine. They are bulletproof and very torquey due to their under square architecture. The older 12 valve, SOHC KA24E was way ahead of it's time with 2 intake valves and 1 large exhaust valve. Ford didn't start doing that till around 2005 with the S197 Mustang.

What a beauty! I’ve got to see this car before at a car meet and she’s mint. The reason why I built my ka24de and installed a turbo on it. That’s definitely a freight train. A true sled. The Ka motors get bad rep. But if you take the right steps to build it right you get a great solid engine.
Ya know I was just considering selling my 240, and I think this video convinced me otherwise. I built my ka with full forged internals and even at just 8psi I have a blast driving it. Always an added bonus when people are in disbelief that it’s powered by the old truck motor! Build them right and they’ll treat you right.

I have a ka24de in my s14. And it's boosted. I've drifted my friend's sr20 and didn't like how the boost spikes. I prefer the smooth transition and torque of my boosted ka. That's my spill.
Got a Rb20det in my s13 hatch right now. But In hopefully a few days I’ll be getting a borg Warner ka-t with a forged bottom end. Great timing man. And that car makes me more excited then I was
The ka24de with wolftech cams freaking rips!.... the only draw back is the long runner intake manifold , solve it with a custom plenum and runners ..... I luv the sr20’s and ka24de’s high port head design of the 90’s
you should review a Volvo S60R. you thought that 240 sounded good lol wait until you drive a big turbo S60 haha there sick. you gotta love them 5 cylinders.
I turbo'd my KA back in 2005. Did about 300whp for about 10 years daily driven and driven hard on the weekends. Got a second car so I decided to turn up the boost and cracked the ringlands. The internals can hold up to higher hp but the rings need to be gapped to account for higher cylinder temps that NA. So while under boost they expand until they meet and end up buckling the piston. Hence, cracked ringlands. I'm doing a full rebuild for it to be bulletproof but not crazy power. I'd rather have it overbuilt and last. I have the option to go RB25 but the support for the KA is there so why spend extra money? Even if the RB sounds so good. :D
1991 was the first year of the ka24de ( D= dual overhead cam ). Its been also said that the 1991 ka24de had a hotter cam profile. The single overhead cam ka engine code was Ka24e
I have always loved the S13 especially the coupe. It's cool to see the KA getting some love since it seems everyone loves to hate on it. It's like the Honda D series.
i had a ka-t back in 2008 ish everyone hated but i used to blow the doors off swapped cars.. ka is a beast of an engine p.s. the intake and exhaust ports are the same size as the RB and same flow characteristics 2.6 RB 2.4 KA loves turbo
@@morganee15 Did you build this? It's quite impressive, and inspirational as I look to resurrect my low mileage KA-T. Would love to know more about it.

He's flexing on KA owners. Which is funny but I had a KA motor, it was great! Even the single cam was stout.
its actually "KA NO SR YOU BITCH"
240 is a damn fool!
I love this car ka moter clean paint clean interior no stupid exhaust and the car isn't loaded with stickers it's nice to see a clean fast 240 Good job beautiful sleeper and of course thank you David for the great video and God bless 🙌 😊
Finally! Not a bashed 240!
Jimmy oakes Needs to see this for his RWD civic!
And that car makes me more excited then I was
I remember reading a super street article about the K vs the Sr. The K was better because it had more compression. Blast from the past!
Definitely Ka-t
I got a s14 Kouki all NA mods & it dont actually sound that bad at all, but yes definitely a Ka-t 💯%
The ka24de with wolftech cams freaking rips!.... the only draw back is the long runner intake manifold , solve it with a custom plenum and runners ..... I luv the sr20’s and ka24de’s high port head design of the 90’s
I’ve seen enough of David’s vids to know that this car scared David as much as it impressed him and made him laugh.
99% of his "reviews" he talks with this attitude like the car is just a f'ing joke. He actually showed this one a little respect.
This 240 looks so damn perfect my god. I love how he did a sneak diss at the beginning when he said it had a full interior 😂
Awesome review! I love clean ka-t builds :)
Man the second I saw this I knew it was Morgan's hahah. One of my fav builds
Thought we determined the KA turbo was legit years ago now. 😕
Jason Colby it’s pretty popular now everyone builds them they will outlast sr20s with the right machine work
Right??
Always want to get my hands on an automatic 240sx and turbo it.
Definitely a more stout block and crank compared to the SR
Jason Colby, you are correct sir. Not sure how this is news...
you should review a Volvo S60R. you thought that 240 sounded good lol wait until you drive a big turbo S60 haha there sick. you gotta love them 5 cylinders.
I think I cried a little in the intro. Such a beautiful car.
Proper way to build a 240sx imo. Love jzs, but origional engine, untouched body, love it.
Still rocking my ka with 240k miles on it. Never gave me a problem. I always have a soft spot for ka
I have always loved the S13 especially the coupe. It's cool to see the KA getting some love since it seems everyone loves to hate on it. It's like the Honda D series.
Yep. I had a '93 KA before, fun car. Had a few mods, ran like hell.
KA is my dream JDM engine, definitely picking one up this summer
KA are about as USDM as it gets lol ol
Idk why but I love the KA over the sr just because the pure sound!!!!
I have 2 KA's Dual cam. Fun little engine! This pushes me to fully build one
Never driven a ka car (I'm in the UK), but I definitely always preferred the CA to the SR over here.
Yo Jimmy Oakes!! Don’t get sad about the KA! Build it up to 700hp in Nissonda!!!
This reminds me of beating NFS Underground 2 with the 240sx. Good times
i had a ka-t back in 2008 ish everyone hated but i used to blow the doors off swapped cars.. ka is a beast of an engine p.s. the intake and exhaust ports are the same size as the RB and same flow characteristics 2.6 RB 2.4 KA loves turbo
this answered my question. I'm building my ka
Would love to see the exact build list for this car if anybody knows?
@The Fourth I post about the car often on my Instagram! @merganevans
same!
@@morganee15 Did you build this? It's quite impressive, and inspirational as I look to resurrect my low mileage KA-T. Would love to know more about it.
KA’s have always been a great engine when talking about boosting. People just neglected to actually take a good look into it for all those years. I work at a shop and a former employee had a 950hp KA-T it’s all about how much you wanna spend!
I think the debate has more been from bJDM fanboys cause we didn't get a turbo here in the US. I feel that the only reason to go SR is because parts are way easier to find now than KA parts unfortunately
Dream car. Just with a track setup, and a silvia front end
