  • @Luthiart
    @Luthiart 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Basses seem like such an after-thought to Gibson. I've often believed that Gibson's design philosophy is that basses are just guitars with thicker strings.
In my opinion, ALL Gibson basses are ugly (with the exception of the Thunderbird, and maybe the EB-3), and most of them sound like wooly, muddy, shite. I don't know how they do it. I used to own an Epiphone Classic IV Pro Thunderbird (don't you just love those succinct guitar names?), which were built to the same specs as the USA T-Bird, and even came stock with the same USA pickups, and it sounded light-years better than its Gibson counterpart. Before I bought the Epi, I A/B'd it against Gibson T-Birds constantly, and the Gibson always sounded like a muffled fart when compared to the Classic IV Pro (for more than double the money). Whatever they were doing in that Indonesian factory, they should have been doing it in Nashville... The only reason I got rid of that bass was because playing a Thunderbird is like wearing a frickin' aircraft carrier across your chest, and the end of the headstock is in another zip code. I got tired of whacking it into mic stands (and other band members), and it didn't balance well in two different directions.
Gibson should just stick to making guitars. They're never going to capture more than a slim fraction of the bass market, and what they do produce is just... lazy. From design to finished product. It's like they're just going through the motions, just to have SOMETHING to offer.

I agree more with this video. But I think all gibson basses, except for the thunderbird are ugly. Playable? Absolutely. But ugly. The fernandes revelle I enjoy. The kiesel basses are all hideous. What really really really gets me is that these so called top of the line guitar makers seem to have nothing in the design dept when it comes to basses. A les Paul bass ? , NO. An SG bass ? NO.
Those designs are for electric guitars, not basses.
As far as I can see these companies don't give a shit about bassists. Oh yeah they want your money but don't want to put any effort into designing something truly for the bass player.

Dude, it's not taht you think "X-bass is ugly , Or y-bass is not" that get's peopel's fethers ruffled when you don't like an instrument they love. it's they way you communicate that dislike . putting the isnturment down saying it's gross or what ever insult you usde for a particular model. sure there's basses i think look nasty in all thr wrong ways , but if just one musican can be found that likes something then it's a valid bass , especially if it sounds good too. you could judt say "i don't like it" explain why, then move on. you don't have to go "ewe gross " and then do a series of contorted and exagerated gross faces at it.

Fodera are ugly basses and they cost alot, why? .. You always see people play these that have a bad case of note diarrhea. I guess when you play "expensive" you gotta have an expensive bass. I'll stick with my two Fender Geddy Lee Signature Jazz Basses and my Cort Gene Simmons Punisher. I play loud and straight forward, and that's what they are made for.

How about a video on ugly shirts? Shouldn't be to difficult. 😁😉
On "not ugly' basses, check the white colored Godin Z1 from the late '80s. One to fall in love with. However, am I allowed to judge what's 'not ugly'? 🤔

I agree with pretty much everything you said, except the Kiesels. I liked most of the Kiesels you said were ugly, and disliked the ones you liked. Rad, my dude.

this is sad that Gibson doesn't care about basses. the last Gibson Les Paul Tribute Jr. (I think) is pretty cool but if you want to buy a Gibson EB-2 or EB-0 you'll have to :
    - buy an old Gibson (who costs 2000 -> 5000$)
    - try to find a Japanese copy of these basses (wich is really rare now)

Gibson Grapper and Ripper basses, they are REALLY UGLY and boring at same time. If it's possible. Maybe that is reason why I don't see them usually..

some of the opinions coming outta u'r mouth while choosing to wear that shirt....talk about "just doesn't sit right, just don't look good!" gimmie a fucking break, and also, the Ibanez Xiphos is such a rad guitar! like c'mon dude . the FFDP bass does look a litttle wacky, but brass knuckles look more rock n roll than that god damn shirt. arg, fuckin hell

I agree on some, I like the gibbo eb3, ripper and grabber and the stienberger ( the gibbo is hideous) but I like the Jackson and kiesels. The Tobias isn't bad like the grecco but Generally hate the l.p. shape.

I was forced to record Metal with a Steinberger - OMG, what a nightmare. The bass was so uncomfortable! It sounded great on record, but man it was a pain in the ass to have to play a fast, complex bassline on. No, just - no.

there is one guy who said they needed a V Bass, the guy from Butthole Surfers, Jeff Pinkus!
he now uses all aluminium Flying V Basses.
also Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr and Justin Chancellor both have V Basses.

What's your opinion of the Epiphone Embassy V vs the Gibson EB (similar but not the same)? I picked one up in wood-grain finish and I've gotten a lot of good comments (and a lot of folks love borrowing it to play). It's a bit heavy, but it has got a great lower register and sustains.

I owned and played 2 victory artist basses for many years . I bought my first one prior to knowing how to play at all due to the fact I thought it looked so cool . Oh , and it was outfitted with Moog electronics, so that was a plus .

I mostly agreed with you in the last video. But this time, all your opinions became invalid when you defended headless basses. They're all terrible and pointless. I still clicked like, though, because why not.

I have an 2008 Epiphone Les Paul bass that I really like. I’ve got the transparent black finish. I think it looks better than the red that was offered. It kinda is one of those designs that you either like it or you don’t. What about those really small Ashbory basses with the silicone strings? Didn’t Fender put those out?? I find those to be nauseating.

Hahahaha ... innovative? Almost all of them are the same thing Leo Fender designed in the 50's but a different shape. There's only been three innovators in electric bass since then: Steinberger, Kubicki and Stonefield.

The les Paul basses were just too much like a 6 string guitar, whereas fender precision just say's BASS! its styling etc. The design is either just lazy or they tried some unified gibson style branding for bass n guitar. Not for me, even when i had no bass of any significance. It was a westone but it looked and felt like a bass and there i believe its potential buyers lay, guitarists who ended up getting put on bass but wanted the look?

I had a Washburn T24 for a few years. The horn is for sure a fucking trip, but it played wonderfully and after a while you forget you're playing with Gumby's knob.

Oh wow. If i'm not mistaken, that FFDP sig bass used to be a T-bird inspired shape until I saw it was discontinued. So I'm guessing that's the updated version? Either way... Fucking yikes!

Here from the future, Blame all the hipster prog zoomer kids for making the goofiest guitars / bass shapes with the most strings the typical norm now 🙂 it’s all weird and wrong imo. None of them look good
