I have been feeling the same way lately about what I'm painting. I want to paint it "my way" along with using the experience and knowledge I have gained through YT tutorials I have watched. I am always grateful for all of you out there in TH-cam Land who share your talent and knowledge and love of painting. I appreciate you so much.
For such a young person, you are very wise. I have been secretly feeling like a fraud and want to paint from a reference as well. I have tried doing this but it didn't always work out too well. I will give it another try. Thank you.
@brushmovement You are a great painter but not only that, you can really tell you put your heart into your art and into trying to help others along in their process. You are very motivational! Thanks, Jillian!
I thank you for your honesty around hand holding watching TH-cam’s as a crutch. It is encouraging to hear you voice your opinion and it does resonate with me.
I think I’m now in this place. I’m tired of trying to keep up with tutorials and having anxiety knowing that my painting isn’t going to look like the instructor’s. So I am going to pick out a reference photo and try and do the best I can. I have a lot of trouble remembering how to layer. I think it is because I want results too fast and I try to paint things completely right away. I also have issues with perspective and shadows, but I think the obstacle you speak of here would have the most long term effect on being content and relaxed. And that will help me be in a better mindset so I improve my creativity. Thank you for your video. It helped me highlight which things are most important to work on. Have a great day!😀
You are right that when things 'fall into place' it usually begins a lot messier and comes with a lot more self-doubt than is 'documented'. I had to sit with lots of uncomfortable messy middles before finding my way - and I am still on this path of figuring things out. There will always be lots of wishes we hope for our art - staying in the moment with our art also is another practice I am figuring out. Thank you for sharing your comment and glad you are here!
I listen to your videos while I paint and do my own thing. I follow your channel because I feel connected to your approach- needing a creative outlet to balance my life focused on being a mom to young children right now ❤
Thank you for taking us on your walk with you but more importantly, thank you for not giving up! Your style of art is so unique and beautiful! You are such a positive influence to the art community, weather someone is a beginner or an advanced artist, you truly inspire all.
Aw.. what a wonderful video, thank you Jillian. I found what you said - about everyone having an inner child who is waiting to be seen - so moving. And true. I'm so thankful for tutorials; I have needed someone I trust and like to hold my hand; but am also thankful to be starting to trust that my decisions about what to do (and where to swish the brush) are also valid and necessary. Thank you for cheering us on as we take our steps with gratitude xx
You are a favorite teacher for me. I’ve honestly needed to take a break from tutorials because my summer is so busy. However, I still love painting, so I spend time whenever I can, just playing with my watercolors. I have a drawer full of beautiful watercolor paintings I created from following tutorials. I’m proud of them, but they aren’t “mine.” I copied a line drawing, I made sure I had the right colors and brushes. I paused the videos so I could make sure I was following as closely as possible, and frankly, it really wasn’t much fun. I cannot tell you how much your words mean to me. You give me hope, strength, enthusiasm, and patience. I have the ability, but I don’t have the self confidence most of the time. This is supposed to bring joy to my life, not make me feel like I’m not good enough. Thank you for being you. Thank you for sharing your feelings. Thank you for making watercolor fun!
That is so beautiful! You give so much confidence to us to try on our own! Yes, we have come to rely so much on tutorials! As i was watching you paint, a hundred questions was running through my mind! As to when you applied the next layer?, did you wait for the first one to dry? Etc. we have to learn to let go and paint on our own instincts at times! I agree! Hope this transitions my tryouts a bit easier! It’s good that my art stays within the four walls of my home and also in my sketch books and not even seen by anybody!! 😅 Thanks for your encouragements! Enjoy every bit of your channel contents!
I have to agree that it is a bit of a leap to go from tutorial land to suddenly trying things on your own. It's embracing the messiness of it but messes are also anxiety provoking! So it's a lot of things to think about... and yes like you - I started to wonder many things about how people paint and when or why and what. It became a red flag for me because I couldn't paint without a screen in front of me. I hope that you find ur own transition and it doesn't have to be as "drastic" as I did... rather - take your time to decide when the time is right:) glad u r here!
I have been painting about 2 years now and I think I am finally ready and confident enough to try painting from my own reference photos. This video really inspired me and made me look at using a reference photo in a new light. When you mentioned how painting from your own source will allow you to find your style and voice it clicked for me. Everyone sees the world differently and I want to create art in the way I see and feel the world, not how somebody else does... If that makes sense. You are much better at articulating what you want to say than I am! Lol
Also! I have to say that I would not feel confident to paint on my own if it was not for your tutorials and courses. You have to learn to walk before you can run. My layering has been getting so much better after watching you and your style. I am not sure if I would have gotten this far without your videos! Now, all I need to do is stop procrastinating. I was supposed to be painting already 20 minutes ago. Oops. Better close out of TH-cam quickly before I lose 2 more hours!
I love this video! I pretty much feel the same way. At the beginning of my journey, i was only using tutorials for several months . There was definitely a dependency . Thank you so much for discussing! I love the direction your channel has gone
Thank you for being here and so glad that you can relate to my journey! I believe so many of us feel like 'we can do it' with the help of youtube and while its a great starting point - the dependency and imposter syndrome for me was really what made me see I have outgrown it :)
I always love to hear about what you overcome. As an observer, you always assume the artist is just able to miraculously deliver every time. I loved hearing about what you wish you had done as I always feel that I could repaint a better version. Thanks again for your honesty and openness. ❤
Yes! I used to feel so confused about how effortless it looks but it is ANYTHING BUT.... I like seeing you develop your voice and also seeing you test out different ways of painting! Thank you for dropping a comment here Lesley!
Thank you so nuch for this video. Last night I made a decision to paint from my own photos the subjects I want to paint in my own style. Painting from life is an option for me as well. I think we will grow as artists. Be brave!
Thank you ❤ I do need to jump in and go for it as far as painting goes. I love to watercolor, but for some reason, I don't know why I'm scared to just get into my beautiful craftroom and create. I do not know what is golding me back besides that and time. 😊
We are our worst critics - and I know that fear, I feel like the more I know and learn, the harder it is to 'accept' a mediocre piece of art. I feel like I should be spitting out masterpieces which honestly - is quite impossible and only unicorn artists do that.... so I find my sketchbook practice has surprised me in new ways where I start to experiment more and play more than expect. I hope you just jump in soon! :) Here for you!
I was trying to find the book you were carrying when you first walked into your studio. It looks like it’s different than the one you posted in the links in the description. Can you share the title of this book and author so I can buy it as a gift. It looks so beautiful. And your work is stunning! Thank you!

Jillian, thank you for saying out loud what my soul did not know to put into words.

Thank you Jillian for succinctly putting into words what I have been feeling and struggling with over the years. ❤❤
Your floral paintings and use of shapes and colors blows me away every time! Thank you for all your videos and guidance. You are so great!

This video is so powerful. I went through the same thing…nothing will replace your own teaching and learning.

Thank you! This was so so helpful. I've become too reliant on tutorials and that destroys my ability to express my self through my art.

Hurrah! That is a huge win! I am so glad to hear about your decision and cannot wait to see you learn and grow :)
I can't wait to begin today. I'm diving in and see where it takes me. Will keep you posted.

Very good advice!
I was trying to find the book you were carrying when you first walked into your studio. It looks like it’s different than the one you posted in the links in the description. Can you share the title of this book and author so I can buy it as a gift. It looks so beautiful. And your work is stunning! Thank you!
Same here! … I couldn’t find it on Amazon .. LOVELY art work you painted in this video!! ❤
I think it's Beauty in Bloom: Floral Portraits by Debi Shapiro
You are so correct. I really need to get off of youtube!!!
youtube has everything! what can we not do without it! :P
Do you sell your painting?
