I'm trying to get a grasp on how this thing operates. Reading through some of the comments and replies, the impression I get is that the wheel turns in the wrong direction and is fed water at it's top. I couldn't see that in the film however. Also, what is the bucket for ? It reminds me of a ball float in the tank of a toilet.
There is really not a lot of power there. That's part of why it's so big -- leverage! Even when it was designed, they could have replaced the entire edifice with a tiny boiler. Nowadays, an engine 1 strong man can lift. But the important thing was that it was free... Now the water going through it is probably worth more than any power you could get out of it.
WOW!!!! This is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! I would LOVE to visit there. I'm in the process of building me a small 32" water wheel for my water mill next to my koi pond. I just uploaded a video of the progress. 😃👍🏼
Even when it was designed there was not a **LOT** of power there... Just very **convenient** to find it in that location. These days the water is probably worth more.
It is an overshot wheel Michael. I think the water emerges out of the base of the tower under a head and goes up through the tower and then (I know) it goes out the spout at the top and falls on the wheel driving it back towards the tower side.
Gra Gor Hi. If I may correct you, she is a pitched undershot wheel. The water stops short of the top centre of the wheel and causes the wheel to rotate backwards. By doing this, greater efficiency is achieved and the wind is less likely to interfere with the water in the buckets.
@@bigkiwimikeIt’s not going backwards It’s just going in the direction that it was designed to go. The water flows in near the top and fills the buckets and that weight turns the wheel. On one side of the wheel the buckets hold water. That weight pulls the wheel down. As the wheel turns the buckets come up the other side upside down. On that side they cannot hold water so that must be the up. The wheel will only go one way.
I want to get in it . And then crawl around upon the wheel . Kind of like how Keenan Thompson crawled out of the tellivision set in that movie Fat Albert
The wheel itself can't be converted to product electricity however the viaduct can provide adequate water volume and flow rate further up the line to provide water for 3-4 individual water turbines staggered down the line.
It's a funny thing but when I was 12 or there abouts I went to isle of Man with my family from Manchester and this bloody wheel 🎡 wasn't turning. Im 52 now and still to this day whenever anyone mentions the Isle of man I pipe up with my story of total disappointment that this bloody huge wheel wasn't turning lol

Seems like a waste of free energy but it's equally important to see it working in its original configuration for historic interest.

@@caroleast9636 Fair call. When I said backwards however, I meant she is rotating in the direction you would not expect a normal water wheel to go.
