- BBC has reportedly payed £169 million chasing TV licence dodgers via sending them letters through Whistl and Royal Mail every year for five years.

Quite right. When I tell Americans we have to pay one particular broadcaster to be allowed to watch any other broadcasters they think it's mad, which it is.

The vast majority will not be dodging the licence.
Legally you do NOT have to pay if you don't watch or record Live TV or watch iPlayer.

The threatening letters tgat the BBC srnd out are utterly appalling.
And they don't accept complaints about them. When I phoned them to complain, they simply refused to register it as a complaint.
3 years licence free,get a threatening letter every single month now , tossers,p.s it was never £6 per week ,thats £312 per year,they wish.
I picked up on that crazy figure too. Perhaps the presenter is not very good at simple maths. Mike Graham, please don't go giving BBC Licensing any ideas.

There is talk that if the government does scrap the TV licence they will probably just add the cost to something else that few can evade, such as Wi-Fi, or council tax, your energy bill or even mobile phone bills, not much room for manoeuvre then.

charge captta for entering your property after denying right of access put a sign up stating cpita must agree to pay 179 quid or what ever it is to enter property and by entering they agree to pay :)
I have stopped paying the tv licence fee now for 4 years and still watch live tv on sky news or Itv news . All the rest is utter rubbish with reality shows. The good stuff on is. on TH-cam showing retro shows from the sixties seventies and eighties. The licence goons never get in my flat if they call at my door

All catch-up tv is free with adverts or small monthly subscriptions with no contract. I don’t watch live tv. Haven’t done for years. I see news on here and google!

I’m not a license fee dodger,I just refuse to pay for something I do not use and why should I ??? It’s the same with the electricity and gas,even if I don’t use any I still have to pay the standing charge which equates to around £6-50 a week. If I don’t buy any fuel for my car I don’t have to pay Tesco any money,the same goes for food,this is just a government approved rip off and I’m not paying for it, if people want the junk programs the BBC put out that’s fine their the one’s that should pay for it by subscription not hounded every month because I don’t want it. The BBC wouldn’t last five minutes if this was the case and they know it and the likes of Lineker would have to go back to kicking a bag of wind about,his wages are a National disgrace when compared to what the nurse’s and NHS staff get who actually do work for their money.I have absolutely no intention of ever paying that license fee ever again letters every month or not and there not entering my home either. The government have lost control off these companies,water,gas, electricity BBC and council tax that rake in millions of pounds a year for very little in return.
Quite right! Discussions about supposed TV Licence fee evaders should also include the fact that many of us non payers are actually LLF (Legally Licence Free). It could be that the independent channels don't want their viewers to know about that as we aren't allowed to watch their programmes live, no doubt effecting their viewing figures and income from advertising.

Old style broadcast TV will be gone before 2040. All of it. They just won't be broadcasting the signal via that technology. Everything will be online. When that happens, the BBC is doomed. No one will watch it if it is just another choice online.
In the meantime the government, with your sanction, will waste literally billions trying to keep it alive. People like you can't imagine a world without bureaucracy and government subsidy.
