- This is a test of the "Überroll-Schutzsystem" on a 2001 BMW 330Ci Convertible. it's quite amazing. It is released via magnetic energization when the vehicle exhibits a possible rollover situation.
I'm actually not from Doug! This was recommended.

Me too, but I don't watch every single video. I'm assuming it was the Ferrari video.
What Doug Demuro video? I watch all his videos and never had a need to watch this video, it was in my recommended lol
Same
PHANTOM MEDIA - Cars, RCs, and Lego Technic Same what's driving us to this video.
I half expected you to jump and roll over the car after your countdown!
A MILLION times thank you!...My car rolled down the driveway (e-barke failed) into the house (about 10 feet) and it triggered the ROPS. I was afraid i would never be able to drop the top again...I ran down stairs just now to try this and it worked!! THANKS!!!!
You sure do your research
Tamara Scavella he's winning
I read driveway as "highway" and was shocked to read that you were mostly concerned with retracting the bars rather than being thankful you lived lol.
Patriot 03 same
You did this with the battery connected
this is a 2010 video that looks like it was made in 2005
Walter White “this video was uploaded to youtube via android phone”
@Walter White you do realize the best camera on a smartphone right now is the Google pixel 3 which is a Android phone.
@Walter White it was the exact same story in 2010 Android phones and iphones were very close to each other
@@carsonj4031 Don't be naive. Android phones used to be the cheap alternative to apples premium devices. They had subpar cameras and screens. Now Android knocks it out of the park from a tech perspective leaving apple with only their top tier branding and marketing. But this was not the case 8 years ago
@@WACC_Warlord I agree with you 100 percent, here's my famous motto tho, FUCK IPHONES.
I can 100% assure anyone these these will work no doubt. I was involved in a very serious drunk driving accident about 4 months ago with my best friend that changed both of our lives. Luckily no other vehicles were involved. Just my friend and I. We were in my 2000 323CI and flipped once in the air. The other 3 times was on the ground and over train tracks. Just looking at the damages that were done to the car, that’s my estimate on how many times we flipped. From where I remember us when we first started losing control and from where we ended when I woke up, was a very long distance. I know we slid on the asphalt for some parts because both driver and passenger side doors had asphalt embedded in them, in places. All to say, yes. The ROPS will no doubt save your life. I actually wasn’t aware they were even in the car to begin with until I had gone to get all my stuff out of my car the next day. I had taken a few pictures and videos then was looking inside and notice these two black bar things sticking out of the seats and then it came to me... “These were probably rollover bars that came up when we rolled.” Sure enough. Never really done any research on them but decided it was a good idea seeing that I’m getting an m3 convertible, I’d like to know as much as possible about specs for any e46 3 series just so I can be up to date on issues. Anyway, Great video!!!
You remove the plastic cover spanning between the bars, underneath the headrests (if they are still installed). You will see a spring-loaded retaining mechanism. Pull it toward the front of the car and push the bar down until it is fully retracted. It will make a clicking noise as it is moving down until they are fully seated. The roll over system will automatically turn off the warning light if they both have been reset properly and there are no active faults in the system.
Thanks Doug
Many men
I'm in an extrication course atm; never knew cars could do this. Very interesting. Thanks
They would certainly help rear seat passengers survive, along with the reinforced windscreen surround, but you would still be very likely to be seriously injured depending on what the car rolled onto, the speed of the roll, etc, etc. Still something is better than nothing - Not that I plan to roll mine anytime soon! I've tried to find a crash test or rollover image of an E46 convertible, but not found anything yet.
Kavboi 66 you seen mx5 rolling over?
DougDemero?
Yuuup
Ferrari
kek
haha, same here
AcidicElm39898 holy shit yeah ahah Jesus so many ppl as well aha
Way better than the one vw had in the beetle convertible. Friends dad hit a deer and the car was totaled out just from the airbags and rollover protection. Since it goes off and is one time use like an airbag instead of spring powered. Broke the front lights and minor body damage were it not night it was easily driveable.
This is really cool. Didn't know they did that. Thanks for sharing.
Doug DeMuro ?
Yup
Rolls Royce drophead
Ferrari Portofino
Wiggles it ... this will definitely support the weight of the car 😒
Sideways motion doesn't matter that much
Thank you so so much. After a t-bone and an awful lot of money later, i thought i would need to bring my charlie into a body shop. Thank you so much
from e46 forums here. this is awesome. even years later :)
Those look like the handles of my premium Senza suitcases. Very rigid handles! Can easily support 25kg. Not sure how they ended up on these cars though. Must have been a Del Boy flogging them from the faulty suitcases.
Is this how it works in a ferrari portofino
Doug
I came from Doug de merou from his Ferrari California review about the roll bar
My friend had that pop out with convertible top on and they pop out through convertible back window, which is a huge design flaw, I think they redesigned that with newer models.
A comment by a verified user with only one like? How is this even possible?
yea i seen it my brother brought a old peugeot convertible with soft top and bars were out and ripped up the roof not sure if they ever did fix that problem.
What model is it? Mine is E46 as in this VDO. The bars retracted once last year and still had plenty of room to clear the top, not even close to the back window
(Wobble) "Yeah this would definitely support the car"
How did you trigger the bars to go up?
I’m just here to figure out how you got the headrests off! They’re locked in on mine.
So the test button works but what about the sensor that activates the system in an actual crash? How do you know that works?
That was pretty cool
First of all, I really thank you for uploading this video. And I wonder how ROPS works. Is it activated by pneumatic system? I guess ROPS would operate by something explosive, but after seeing you press and get it back to original place, it's like ROPS relies on spring. I hope you to give me clue... :)
thank you very much, it proves my bmw e36 1996
They wouldn’t just sink into the ground? They are super thin
mine did this when doing an unintended airborne after passing a massive bump, I've already done this procedure and it worked perfectly, however my question is do I need to reset something with the scan tool? no warning lights went on with the bump, just the ROPS.
Con
No. Once the module detects they are in the ready position, the system readies for the next event. A fault code will be stored however
Why’d you say oh like that when it sprung
Wont ejecting the head rests leave 4 metal spikes rolling around in the car? Just saying...
So, the weight of the entire car rests upon this nice small little metal tab
Yes, but they are not little tabs. They are high strength aluminum alloy reinforcements that are attached to a mechanism that bolts to the car's chassis. The weight of the entire car can rest on them and the reinforced windshield A pillars.
@@iansanderson That's amazing! Engineering at it's finest!
with the rear up off the ground the front seats have plenty of space...
Why did this get put in my recommendations
same, But weirder is why did we watch it?
😂 ikr
Cuz youtube sucks
The windsheild is built to hold at least the entire cars weight off the ground.
you gave it a quick wiggle "yes this will support the car" lolz, if this accidentally deploys, you need to get somone to have a look at the car. no need to test this, if this is faulty, it will throw codes.
How does one activate the up position without a tester? VIR requires demo of rollover system before using racetrack. Thank you
How would one go about doing this in their own car?
I shit you not, I was watching some SL video from Doug and his 2-seater convertible doesn’t have these bars. I was imagining in my mind “how about a retractable protection bars” and thought myself, “Nah, I don’t think they would be strong enough to withstand such impacts”..!
Are they actually called "head rusts?"
how do make sure the sysem knows that the bars are back in the ready posistion and that there are no fault codes
Damn, I'll make sure I adjust the headrest the next time I'm in a convertible lol.
@99elyzabeth Bring it to the top position, and pull up HARD. if your car is older, or sat in the sun a lot, you may break the plastic holder.
is it standart in all e46 cabrios?
Can you share how did you activate it in the software?
What is this tester to activate the bars? The dash light won’t go off, how do I get the light to go off?
This is a good function
As with all safety systems on BMWs, it's the cheapest possible version of the system, which provides only marginal protection if any. Volvo has a similar system on the C70, but you'll see they are larger, stronger and provide better protection.
thats good for the occupants in the back but what about the front? i know the windshield pillars arent gonna do much...
GeilerDragon they actually take the weight of the entire car and some the front windshield pillars are heavily re-in forced. As a demo BM even balanced an entire car in top of another with the roof down on the windshield pillars!!! Pretty cool
I've successfully reset the bars before. This time I used the same procedure but they will not go down. I have ensured the top is fully up. Any suggestions?
I wish this was on e30
@dustinman00 You can do it manually or using a tester.
How do you pop them manually?
I knew it had it I never knew how it worked. Thanks
what if you catapult out of the seat during the impact of certain crash orientation?
How do you reset it after testing? Just push it down?
Wouldn't the windshield just collapse under the weight of the pressure though?
It may give you enough angle, still, you will end up fucked up but probably not badly decapitated :s
windshield frame is HEAVILY reinforced in these cars
+vjrei badly decapitated? There is no good or bad decapitated! If you get decapitated your fucking dead! Lol
the windscreen is really reinforced in the E46 verts, at the launch demo when they first came out they had one car balanced on another cars windscreen with the roof down as a party trick
No the A pillars are heavily built on these cars, there's actually video of an e36 coupe balancing on the A pillars of a convertible, these cars were 265 pounds more than the sedan or coupe to add more rigidity to the underbody,I have personally removed some of the interior and these cars are braced throughout the bottom of the car.
They are built like tanks.
Where is the crash test?
How did you get the headrest out 2013 335i?
Doug made it seem like it would explode out
Would this system work when the car is off and parked too?
If you leave the headrests on, and the bars pop up, do the headrests fly off, or stay on?
Xmsteel yea they get shot into orbit
Novice Garage is about to come to find out how to put his down
Bet the indicators still wouldn't 'work'
how to activate? how to do the test?
do the Convertibles from the 90's have this feature
no
looks like i going to die then
Yes Volvo C70 had them from Introduction in 1997...
Hi Guys...
I have need help..how can I open convertible top if roll over bar is up ?? 2002 BMW 325ci...please help Me...Thanks
Came from bimmer tips on insta gram
8 years old video ok TH-cam.
Is this similar with the E36 models as well?
Similar, but not the same. I have a E36 & E46 i have never done the e46 but on my e36 i needed a special tool to drop mine. The tool from bmw cost money so instead i just took a piece of metal 2-3cm thick about 1 inch wide and 12 inch's long if you look their is a special groove the tool fits down underneath & slightly behind the bar. When you stick the metal piece down the groove; with some finesse it will unlatch the bar, Keep holding the tool down there and while doing so push the bar down and lock into place.
Nope on lose soil it's a death trap. I wouldn't trust that system to provide protection for my family. It needs to be wider to distribute the weight on more surface area.
Wiggled it...This will definitely support a car. Lol
What Doug demuro video is everyone coming from
Why in the hell a normal guy would wanna drive with convertible??
Best part 2:46
You got me. Good job.
But a stereotypical BMW driver is going to roll it over anyway.
Put your camera on top of them, then test it out. Lets see if they can protect your camera!! hehehehe
I thought the title was best of...
Was a 6 year old filming this?? HOLD THE DAMN CAMERA STILL!
Those wouldn't save shit.... just something to make you feel better about driving it.
Recommend, and really? I'll just buy a Hard top. *And not roll over.*
interesting
*Wye is this in my recommended*
Germans know how to build a Safe car
Crazy how they could be solid bars up all the time but they invented this complicated system you are forced to trust your life to, literally just for aesthetic reasons.
Rops, first made by Volvo. Buy than Bmw
you guys should thanked DougDeMuro for spiking up your views. just saying
That got to be the ugliest interior color ever
No one care that you are here thank to DougDemuro. CAPISH?
How do you activate the bars to begin with? You need a code reader or something?
