  • Kawai CN470 Digital Piano Repair - Pads - Mon. 10/01/18
    Steve Hacker goes into more depth this time, with Kawai CN470 digital piano repair. The last video and any work done on this piano was 3 1/2 years ago. That repair held up EXCELLENTLY. This is PAD replacement - a different repair, but much more detail this time, and many people's questions from the last Kawai repair video are answered here... My apologies for the raw and shaky nature of this video. I wasn't even planning on making a video, and realized at the last minute that I could help a lot of people with previous questions, so I used my phone, and let it roll. Raw, shaky, and zero editing. Sorry... Feel free to ask questions, like, comment, subscribe, etc.... THANKS! ...Steve...

    For those looking to do this repair, the small rectangular pads under the keys are called "slip tape." Kawaii doesn't carry the originals for this piano, but part number #020-05-101 is the newer equivalent. They sell them for about a dollar each, plus shipping.

    Hey, Steve, you're a life saver. I appreciate the level of detail in this video. My keys are dropping loudly where the hammer bed is worn down, so I'll be doing the weather stripping replacement across there. Where is the video of that repair? You mentioned it was a few years before this one, but I'm not seeing it on your channel. If it's no longer available that's fine, the most helpful thing was knowing which material to use.
    Edit: Disregard my question, I found the video. Thanks again!

    Hi Steve - I, for one, am very grateful for these videos because without them, things would be much more difficult for me....reagardless of the camera stability or angle. I haven't seen any of the complainers post their own version of these with a curated set and production crew, so .....there's that.
    Anyway, I've reached out to Kawai and they said they are unable to provide these pads, as they are discontinued. I'm not sure if they truly are, or if perhaps there's a communication issue - because it doesn't seem like they knew exactly what I was talking about. So I have three questions - are you aware of a part number, or exactly what these are called (besides key pads)? Also, do you happen to know the dimensions of them (primarily thickness) and what they're made of, in case I need to find alternatives - so I know what I should look for? Lastly, might you have a particular contact at Kawai you can refer me to, who would know exactly what I'm talking about?
    Thanks again for what you've done here!

    I have a new CN29... A few keys on the front or sides lower down have a little of that white toothpaste looking substance. It's prob. that grease you talked about. I was worried b/c i wasn't sure if a couple keys had a dot of plastic melt. If it's the grease, is that okay? Should I leave it? The piano's bran new. I hope someone can help

    • @SteveHacker
      @SteveHacker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on where specifically the squeak is coming from, but I’ve found that regular hardware store/auto parts store variety white lithium grease takes care of all lubrication needs, and this was actually recommended to me by the parts manager at Kawai...

    HI Steve, Really helpful video, just like your earlier one for the CN470. I've just sent off a query to Kawai Europe for those grey pads. Just one query: at 3:34 you say you've already "loosened up the sides" to lift off the keyboard cover, but after removing as you did the "top back panel" (unscrewing the six screws at the back), I couldn't see how you carried out this second stage, i.e. the loosening of the sides. Were the screws for doing this the large ones in each top corner visible when the "top back panel" was taken off? Thanks, Martin (Ibiza, Spain)

    • @SteveHacker
      @SteveHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MartinSPN ... I honestly can’t remember now, 8 months later. I’ve worked on a bazillion other keyboards and other pieces of gear since then. The screws were “somewhere”. Ugh... Sorry that’s not helpful. What I DO remember though, is putting a fairly strong force on each side to push the sides out a little to make it possible to pull the keyboard cover out of its track on one side, and once one side comes out, the other follows easily. Now that I think about it as I write this, it seems like the screws were underneath and VERTICAL on each side wall (?????). I’m obviously not sure though. I’ll have to go back and look at it when I get time... Sorry I couldn’t be more immediately helpful...

      @@SteveHacker Thanks, Steve. No hurry (if and when you do find out), as I'm off to the UK for three weeks, and who knows when I'll be receiving the grey pads from Kawai. Hi Steve, I'd really appreciate your help. I have a Kawai CN290 with one key that's depressed. I have taken out the keyboard unit but it is a different configuration to your demo. There's no metal cover at the back (you refer to it as a back check). I can see some screws down between each key but I think if I take those out I'll never get them back in again!

    Hello, Steve. I’m writing from Spain, so I apoligize beforehand for my English. I’ve got a CN470 which has just the same problem: it has to get the pads changed. I’ve looked for the pads for myself through the Internet, but I can’t find them. I wrote “kawai pads”, “pads digital piano”, etc., with no result. Would you please tell me an exact reference of the product so I can contact any provider and order it? Moreover, my CN470 needs to get the yellow felt band changed (the one at the bottom, where the hammers rest): again, I couldn’t find it through the Internet, either in Spanish or in English: could you tell me how to call it exactly? Thank you very much!

    • @SteveHacker
      @SteveHacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      José Villar Buzón ... Did you see my other video before this one showing how to replace the felt with weather stripping? It’s worth a watch. Several years later my weather stripping is still performing flawlessly. Regarding your pads, have you tried contacting the company directly? If not please email me at stevejhacker@yahoo.com and remind me to find contact information for you, or you can even contact me on Facebook Messenger via “Steve N Brandon” if you want (actually probably a better way to reach me right now). I may even be able to send you some pads if you don’t have very many bad ones. My main point though is this: I WANT TO HELP YOU, but things are very chaotic right now in the U.S. ... I’m sure they are for you too. Please stay safe and healthy... So, I will need some reminders from you and possibly several messages from you to keep yourself at the top of my to-do list during all this chaos. I hope this all makes sense... Take care and best wishes...

      @@SteveHacker Thank you so much for your answer. Undoubtedly, I will have to wait for this chaos to fisnish and then contact “Kawai España”; if I don’t get the pads this way, I would try to contact Kawai America (and maybe I’d write to you soas to check the exact address). As for the video about the felt, I found it and I will watch it. Thank you again. Best wishes.

      @SteveHacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      José Villar Buzón ... Best wishes to you as well. These are insane times indeed, and so, stay safe and healthy. I know you are having a tough time of it where you are. Here in Southwest Georgia, USA (in the lower left corner of Georgia, 30 minutes from both the Florida and Alabama state lines), we are several weeks behind where you are. New York City (20 hours north) is of course our epicenter, but here in our tiny rural southern town the infections are starting now; 10 infections as of yesterday, but no deaths yet, but we’ve been under a 9pm-5am curfew for a week, and now, today, FULL lockdowns begin for “shelter-in-place”. Nobody goes anywhere, not even outside in the yard, except for food, and other essentials. I’m a motorcycle enthusiast and so I just took my last sad “farewell” ride yesterday afternoon, knowing the bikes will be parked indefinitely from here on. That said, again, when things calm down, let me know if you still need help with your Kawai, and I will help you in any way I can. ...Also, worth noting is, I’ve (for obvious reasons) gone 100% online (Skype, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, etc.) with my music lessons, so if you are interested, or if you know anyone interested, I’m taking students now, all around the world, for guitar, piano, voice, bass, etc. private lessons. Tell anyone you want. Time zone differences are no problem, as I never sleep anyway, LOL! The more, the merrier, all ages, and all skill levels, as I now obviously have PPPLENTY of free time while on lockdown. They’d just need to be able to speak a little English (I can only speak a TINY bit of Mexican-Spanish)... I’m even happy to give people a free introductory lesson to see if they like it before proceeding with asking for anyone to pay me. I think now, more than ever, it’s the time for the whole world to pull together through music... Best wishes to you... 😊😊😊

Unlike the one in this video where you just remove the top cover. you need to take all the screw out from the sides about 4 and the front panel about 7 screws, then the whole top opens up like a chest revealing the inner circuits and access to the keys

    Whats the purpose of those pads? I have a faulty key, but serms to be the rubber bands below, i cleaned the contacts, applied a pencil on the carbons, now 3 keys have that problem, so ima gonna clean them off. • @SteveHacker
      @SteveHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a very different situation from what I had. My pad replacement had to do with the proper functioning of the action (the touch, and the key height)... Yours is about the actual electrical contact and the triggering of the note, if I’m understanding what you are saying...

      @freedomdst 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SteveHacker similar but newer, CN37. I finally got it to work, the key with issues seems to be 98% functional. I tend to believe it was the carbon contacts on the rubber strip, i cleaned them with a eraser then with some alcohol to remove any of my fingers grease, the pencil i applied before made it worse. So ill see how long it goes without problems.

      freedomdst ... Excellent! Congratulations! Yeah, I could’ve told you the pencil thing would make it worse... LOL! ...
