A Trip to Infinity II - Mandelbrot Fractal Zoom (Depth 3e2159)

  • More calming, more trippy, much deeper, and much longer! (3 hours). This is the sequel to "A Trip to Infinity" the most viewed release on this channel. We zoom to a completely new location in this video which is built with the same colour scheme as the original. Some of you complained about the music in the last version, so I have changed it up, but remember, if its not your thing, please load Spotify and play your own. Please subscribe and share!
    By the end, the magnification of the original image is 3e2159. Yes, that is 3 with 2159 zeros after it! To zoom into an image smoothly, you must magnify it exponentially. In this case the magnification doubles every 1.5 seconds. The human mind has great difficulty comprehending exponential. For comparison, the width of the observable universe is about 9e26 meters.

      Around this point I was thinking, "there must be a limit to the depth... unless there is. The only thing there really is a limit to is temperature. You can't go below absolute zero... unless you can. Thus somehow leading to time travel." Because temp deals with motion. Motion gives rise to time. Just a crazy thought, though.

      I'm a math person, and I can't look at Mandelbrot zooms like this for more than a couple of minutes. Besides the fact that they creep me out generally, this one actually made me motion-sick--I had to scroll down far enough to cut off 80% of the video for it to be watchable. Plus, I should know better then to look at these animations; for many minutes afterward, the least unexpected physical contact makes me jump out of my skin.

    Reminds me of a time around 30 years ago when i first used a mandelbrot generator on my Amiga 2k. Took ages to calculate a single frame. Being able to compute a movie of a 3 hour long zoom was unimaginable. Even more so due to having to use arbitrary precision math libraries plus increasingly higher iterations to be able to render an accurate enough representation. Wonder how long it took to render all the frames and what hardware is was rendered on. Either way, beautifully done. Love the coloring scheme that tricks our eyes into seeing this gorgeous pseudo 3D effect.

    I just have to ask because...About a month ago I happened to come across this video and watched it not knowing what to expect, and was blown away! After watching for about 10 minutes I noticed that my head was moving on it's own. I felt like I was on a slow motion roller coaster, and I LOVED IT! The next night I tried it again and this time it was better! The more I watched it, the more my head would go back and forth. Then, my head would go around in a complete circle. I didn't try to control the movement because even though it was a little freaky, it was pretty amazing. Soon my head would actually, at times, spin completely around. I am a very "In control" kind of person. I have tried many times, unsuccessfully, to meditate, so why would watching this take me to a trance-like state? I went into all the comments to see if this was a normal occurrence. I looked through many videos of this type and have not seen 1 post that describes this type of reaction. I have had many of my friends watch this video and the either say nothing happened, or a slight, "oh yeah, it was great". So.....????

    With 3840x2160 pixels to make a calculation on per frame, and 60 frames per second over 3 hours, this video is over 5 trillion calculations. Each of these "calculations" involves many steps, deciding what colour something should be based on how many iterations the program is set to test if the value diverges or not.... And that's just the math, then there's the animation and video processing.... Would love to see the details about what into the making of this video

    • @MathsTown
      @MathsTown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually only calculate a frame data every time the picture doubles. (About 1.8 seconds). Then I zoom, scale and blend the frames. (In this case I need to recolour every frame, but the data is scaled.). This actually creates a much smoother result. Calculating each frame is slow, and causes a lot of aliasing, resulting in a flickering video.

    I watched the part at 1:30 - I was getting closer and closer to the white Curly Q's in the center of the screen, yet it was still further and further away. And then I clicked the pause button. The video was still, but as if it were moving, shrinking away from me. And then there is the music. So good. My body is tinging.....Wild.......I'm clean and sober.

    Thank you for this amazing video. I discovered the Mandolbrot set surfing TH-cam looking for interesting science stuff. I was so amazed with what Mandolbrot discoverd (actually cause of computers) I wanted to dive deeper into the Mandelbrot set myself and I found Microsoft Fractal Viewer, wich I recommend everyone who wants to take a trip into the Mandolbrot set themselves. But anyways, I found your video, thanks to Google amazing AI technology ,and it shows the Mandolbrot set as I was trying to see it for myself. Can I ask what computer you use, what grafics card(s) are you using to do this? ;)

    I enjoy Mandelbrot zooms that pass by mini mandelbrots on the way, and sometimes wondered what would happen if we zoomed all the way into the middle of one of he Julia sets that we passed along the way and if we would even find a mini Mandelbrot hiding in there at all or not. It’s amazing how many patterns can appear in the Mandelbrot set.

    How do you decide where you want the animation to ultimately end up?
    Do you first start with a fixed co-ordinate and then continue zooming in until you reach the desired depth, or are you also slowly adjusting the co-ordinates as you go along so that you can also show off some of the more interesting structures?

    • @klauseberhart6112
      @klauseberhart6112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      devilmaker28 I was thinking about that too. No idea how it's done. I wonder what you'd get if you didn't zoom into the center of those circular structures towards the end, but somewhere next to it.

    Can you make a video one day that has some text comments overlayed? Informing the audience about the size of the whole fractal based on the asumption the clip is being watched on a 24" screen, for example. Something like "now the fractal has a diameter of 100 Meters", "now it has the same area as france", "now it has the diameter of the solar system" etc. Maybe with information on the speed of the margins added. This would be pretty cool.

    • @simonmasters3295

      Lets say you start with a 1mm x 1mm feature, in about 5 seconds it reaches the edge of a 100mm x 100mm frame, and in the next 5 seconds the original frame has become 10,000 mm by 10,000 mm or 10 metres by 10 metres. I reckon every 10 seconds there is a 10,000 fold increase in magnification, which is 10,000 times faster than this famous video:
      th-cam.com/video/egBWkVfBdCw/w-d-xo.html
      If we say, conservatively, that we are zooming in 10 times magnification every 10 seconds, and the original frame edge is expanding just ten times every 10 seconds, in the 60 steps of the first ten minutes we cover scales of 10^-40 to 10^20 the range of quarks and the observable universe. After 3 hours (18 x 10 minutes) we will be covering 18 x 60, or nearly 2,000 orders of magnitude, so the original "frame" would not be two thousand times but the best part of two thousand orders of magnitude larger than the size of the observable universe. Wow

    Fantastic! One little suggestion: Perhaps the colors could randomize a bit, I don't know how, but some variation to the color scheme would yield some additional surprises along the way. This would especially help those of us who are slumming it with a 1080p monitor. Again, amazing job!

    how long does this video takes to make? without proper optimization this takes 8,5 milion pixels to calculate every frame for who knows how many times over and over to only get 1 frame and there are 648000 frames. That would take us to 5,508,000,000,000 calculations if every frame was 1 iteration. Now multiply this by iteration count. Must be no less than 1000 i assume.
