Dear .Mr. Matsunaga, I wanted to express to you the fine TH-cam video you posted on Japanese garden lanterns and their history. At this very moment I’m slowly renovating my family house and garden to a more traditional Japanese styled decor here in the USA.
Being of Sansei descent, I have still have strong Japanese cultural values, ideology, and historic values within my generation though also American born and raised.
I found your post on Japanese lanterns very interesting and hope to view more Japanese cultural subject matters from you. Keep up the great work. Much appreciation. Best regards, Japanese Sansei fan from California

Fantastic content, I’m fascinated with Japanese lanterns and garden design and your channel is inspiring and informative. Living in Australia it is nearly impossible to find these works of art for garden projects. For future content it would be great to learn about the different tsukubai water basin styles. It would also be great to see how lanterns and water basins are designed and carved out by the artists. Keep up the great content

@@soniawoolley366 I’ve only found 2 businesses that supply stone granite lanterns and related items. This video makes me so envious of the range and quality of Japanese garden items and materials. I try to use local materials as much as possible but it’s these pieces that really help with making it more authentic.

Great interview and tour with Mr. Kitayama! I enjoyed learning about the different lanterns and would love to see more conversations with him. Maybe you can ask about the symbol on the sao of the Oribe lantern, is it Buddha? Also, I have heard that there are Shinto origins for some of the lanterns. Thank you for another great video!
p.s. - Similar to this video, a tour of a Japanese nursery stock yard where the gardeners purchase material (matsu, maki, sugi, hinoki) would also be very interesting to see.

When my daughter and I traveled to and within Japan, we visited several lantern shop display areas. I loved to see the different types they had to show. The many styles would make it both easy and hard to pick just one. Here in our garden on Hawaii Island, we have 5 lanterns, all different. I love them all. Aloha

11:51 the “Sanko” lantern struck a chord in me. The sun, the moon, and the Stars and how you use this lantern to display light. I had previously watched A TH-cam video titled: Why Frank Loyd Wright’s windows look like this. It describes the architects manipulation of natural light be it the sun, the moon, and the stars and how natural light was an obsession to him. It described the relationship between homes and natural light using clerestory windows with patterns. Using light settings in architectural design models on computers you can see the graduation of light over the course of a day in Frank Loyd Wright’s designs. I wonder if the same idea was used in Tokyo’s imperial hotel. (The gardeners There must be amazing people to talk to). His idea that a house should stand as a tree in the midst of nature I find so interestingly relatable to the “Sanko” lantern.

This is all new to me and I learned a lot from your video. I started researching because I just bought an old cast iron Japanese lantern at a vintage market and it doesn't look like it's ever been lit. It has a spot for a candle but do people that have stone or metal lanterns ever light them or do they just put them in the garden as a decoration? I would love to see what these lanterns look like lit and see what you use. I plan on lighting mine but I'm trying to decide whether to use a candle or oil. Thank you.

Very interesting video, my friend! I've always wondered about the different styles of lanterns; please teach us more about garden features like this! I wonder if you can do a video about Suikinkutsu, and interview someone who can speak about the history, because even for Japanese people, they are not very well known. They are very mysterious! I would also like to know where I can see more Suikinkutsu in Kyoto, other than Enkoji, Taizoin, and Eikando. By the way, is this the lantern place/Ishiya -san near Ryoanji? I found it by chance when I was on my Kyoto bicycle temple tour, but there was nobody there to speak to. They have such an amazing collection of lanterns and basins! Keep up the good work, my friend!
