Honestly, these islands are not really that great! The weather is always very hot and humid, there are all sorts of very unpleasant crabs which you have to fight off, and after a few days it becomes very boring because there's really nothing much you can do on such a small island. There isn't even a lagoon where you can swim or fish! And it's also not very nice to fight your way into the dense vegetation. Without the nice hut it would be unbearable after a few hours, and if you would be marooned on such an island, you wouldn't survive long.
There is a theory that the American aviatrix Amelia Earhart who went missing in 1938 when she wanted to cross the Central Pacific Ocean and make a re-fuelling stop at Howland Island, may instead have reached the island Nikumaroro where she could have made a successful crash landing on the long stretch of the fairly smooth coral reef. Nikumaroro also looks absolutely gorgeous from above, There's a beautiful large lagoon with plenty of fish and many cocos palm trees. Even the nasty and aggressive cocos crabs are easy to catch and edible. But the expedition teams who investigated this theory, found the island to be an absolute nightmare, although they were well equipped. There are a few videos on TH-cam which show some members of the TIGHAR organisation which organized the expedtions, fly over the island with a helicopter. From above it looks like a dream island - but if you are on the ground it's a very different situation. And two attempts to populate the island and create new living space and financially viable cocos plantations, have been given up eventually because life on that island was too harsh. Today nobody lives on that island anymore. And if Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan really reached the island, they didn't manage to survive. There are actually some indications that someone camped for a while on that island and consumed fish, turtles and crabs, but eventually died on the island. A partial skeleton has been found in 1941. But so far it was impossible to prove conclusively that the camper was Amelia Earhart.
There are many islands in the Pacific Ocean which are absolutely beautiful, and it's wonderful if you can visit them. But these small things with just a few beaches and some dense vegetation don't have a lot to offer.

That's funny. I was there in 2016 and it was a sorry site. People were and still are poor. Government officials were and still are crooks and corrupted. Western Union was always full since people there didn't and still do not work the land but begging their relatives overseas for money.

I used to go there when I was a lad with some fish divers and they caught lots and lots of fish. It wasn't anyone island and I guess it is someone's island now. Sea snakes were so many anywhere we went especially at night.
