      Yeah one set on a jungle island in WW2 in the Pacific against imperial Japanese troops and/or US marines would be spot on maybe too close to the first predator but I'm sure with good writer and director you could flesh it out into its own. I think historically there was one island on the Pacific that the Americans pushed the Japanese to flee to the other side of the island crossing a swamp and in a span of two days they said a hundred Japanese soldiers were killed by salt water crocodiles.

    I believe that this Predator was an adolescent who may have even been on his first hunt, that’s why he takes a snake and wolf skull, things that any more veteran Pred wouldn’t care for, on top of that he was very satisfied with the kill of a bear, something that would not compare to say a Xenomorph, so he is also not even blooded yet

      While I do agree that this predator and possibly many of the predators we've seen in the other movies such as Predator 1 and 2 are young blood it's been confirmed that this is a different variant of predator altogether, similar to the bad bloods in Predators with how they were a larger and stronger variant than the normal one we're used to, but ultimately not a huge difference as the normal predator was still able to put up a good fight against the bad blood despite having damaged gear and being hung up like that for really who knows how long

    I had the impression that Feral was a adolescent. He observed predator and prey interactions, took a hit in nearly every fight, has less advanced tech though that could be a clan cultural vs a rank in society thing, he's extremely flashy and shows off while he hunts but only against the massive group of Frenchmen(almost like he's showing off like the Youngbloods in AvP), and he isn't as reserved or I would even suggest experienced as Jungle Hunter. Becoming so enraged he fell for Naru's trap and shot in a rage at her brother even after seeing the masks guided system sending the spears off course. I thought his appearance was also due to his age but a subspecies makes more sense.

      Yes and no. It's true it's young blood and it was actually it's first hunt to prove himself to other, older Yautja. However as it was mentioned, it's just another species or subspecies of Yautja, making it second known another variant other than Super Predators.
      It seems that Yautja can be classified in 2 main species: "Classic Predators" and "Super Predators". What we've seen in Prey is more in "classic" aligment, however due to different environment of it's ancestors, it looks different from other Yautja. The best analogy is us and how different native Europeans look to native Africans. The environment shaped us differently, however we are still the same species. We can even go futher and notice that each clan can have it's own distinct set of characteristics which make them even more apart from each other, similar to how there are minor differences between certain groups of the same race. For instance just compare Yautja from one "Jungle clan" and then Yautja from "City hunters". They are the same species, and even subspiecies/race, but still look distinct from one another.

    The Feral's lack of armor, advance tech, and experience when hunting may actually be the result of it simply being a young blooded predator who hasn't proven itself yet.

      Her character arc could've been done in a better way but I agree, that victory cheer was infectious and deserved as she finally avenged her brother and to a lesser extant she also proved herself as a hunter.
      Though I feel the lesson should be to not let pride control you cause I feel she and the predator was in parallel like he was a reflection of her toxic pride and resentment of her family.
      Like a mindset that makes you think you can take down a bear with an arrow is exactly the type of recklessness the Predator showed, hunting for sake of hunting and not survival or self improvement to treat your prey as living and worth respecting.

    Im under the belief that the "lower level" of the tech used by the Feral Predator was likely a sign of them selecting levels of gear and weapons that are more appropriate for the setting they are hunting. At this point, humans are very primative, with firearms being a pretty new thing to exist (at least in the American continents). So it human prey likely weren't seen as dangerous enough to warrant the plasma caster and more serious weapons they normally are seen using in other Predator movies. This is to help 'scale' the hunt difficulty down or up for the sake of honor and enjoyment. Similar to the example you used about a High level player in an MMO killing low level players, that would be a dishonorable hunt and no enjoyment could be had, if the Hunt is too easy, so they help to offset that with 'lower level' gear.

    • @Wavemaninawe
      @Wavemaninawe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      This is my impression as well.
      They have their particular Code, and seem to adhere very strictly to it.
      There is also this common explanation (not sure if its canon), that Yautja have a ranking system, similar to belts in a martial arts academy.
      The more experienced you are, the more dangerous game you will be allowed to hunt, which in turn grants you access to more formidable weapons.
      With the ultimate test being the Xenomorph.
      Feral pred used a load out that was appropriate to his hunting grounds.
      Razor frizbees, plasma casters and the rapid fire dart slinging spear... that stuff would have been overkill in 1719 Americas. And likely considered as dishonorable / unfair play.
      Also, he did a lot of bumbling mistakes, suggesting that he was a rookie.
      Dude was pretty wicked with those swords though, and knew his way around a tomahawk. I give him that.
      Also, that collapsible shield was the bomb.

    • @mardroidmk1393
      @mardroidmk1393 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My take too, although I think the dart weapon he used was probably more deadly than the plasma weapon in some ways. I.e., I think the plasma caster essentially shoots bolts in straight lines while the dart weapon seem to change trajectory and home in on the target! (Although that literally backfired at the end.) I agree it was probably chosen to closer match the tech of the time, rather than being a species trait (the plasma caster has a faster rate of fire for sure- swings and roundabouts) even if they're meant to be a different species/subspecies.

    • @Psychosomatic63
      @Psychosomatic63 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@mardroidmk1393Late but it could also just be a preference thing, in videogames alot of people have their own preferred weapon loadout(s), perhaps some Predators enjoy using more "primitive" weaponry (primitive by their standards ofc) because in their mind: it's a reliable and time tested design/a handicap=more honourable hunt or showing off their skills.
      To coincide with the idea it's a preference thing, maybe some Preds use certain gear so long they grow attached or sentimental to the equipment, like a hunter keeping the same Knife they used to skin their very first target.
      furthermore in the case of prolonged use perhaps some Preds are more confortable with their weapon of choice and have grown accustomed to that weapons specific capabilities and design that they're more proficent with that weapon compared to others.

    • @dianapennepacker6854
      @dianapennepacker6854 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WavemaninaweI have also read that "normal" predators get weapons based on their prestige or rank.
      While also taking weapons based on prey. You aren't going to go hunting squirrels with a 8 guage shotgun with shells afterall.
      Remember in Alien versus predator how they B lined it to the plasma casters? They didn't come with them! They needed to go collect it to equip them against a tough foe.
      Always makes me laugh how they are basically player characters in an RPG. Unlocking better loot.
      Only reason why I think this one was a noob is due to how it acted in a movie. It got caught off guard multiple times. Got caught off guard by a charging horse! Then wounded and killed itsself. It lost its cool.
      I do like how it basically fires arrows, instead of plasma, and thought the shield was a nice addition.

He was either too angry or too hurt to be as effective as he normally would be. At that point, he had been stabbed in the foot, shot with numerous arrows and bullets, stabbed through the chest with his own spear, clubbed in the head from horseback, and shot directly in the back of the head from point-blank range, all within the last day or so.
      He was WAY more aggressive in the last fight with Naru, losing any sense of tactical skill and just using brute force.

    I actually enjoy seeing that as the Yautja are explored more in each movie (The Predator being the horrific exception)
    All Yautja all had some differences, all different personalities, all different ways of hunting, and possibly cultures.
    In many ways they very much are like humans. Given that they only hunt prey for sport, it means that overall they are not hostile like your traditional aliens.
    Yautja clearly have morals, ethics, and if encountering another sentient being that manages to kill one of their own will at times approach the victor and offer them maybe a trophy. They even look down on member that breaks with traditional hunting to the point they are willing to hunt them down if possible..
    Lets hope they create more time-period movies with the Yautja. So many opportunities and so many ways they could have influenced myths and legends through human history.
    A feral Yautja in ancient Egypt or the Middle East or Persia or the African Kingdoms would be awesome as technically he would fit the environment which would be considered closer to his biome. Plus seeing one of them wearing or adopting those ancient empires gear and clothing or styles would be interesting.
    Or another one back in the Jungles like during the era of the Aztec (obviously)
    Or the Mayans, Imagine Mayan or Aztec Warriors with Obsidian weaponry trying to take town a Yautja, then a later movie seeing a Yautja carrying Aztec or Mayan inspired weaponry. That would be terrifying. Would kinda fit them however.

Sort of like a game warden, turned up to 11. An executioner, leanign away from the general "the old Yautja style needs to die" mentality that modern film makers seem to have. Compare that to the City Hunter who's in the middle of Los Angeles, a highly urbanised area nestled within a valley facing cold water currents, resulting in lots of pollution from cars belching in the air with the geographic location of the city making all that smog stagnate in the air. This predator appears to be a feral predator (who are typically outcasts/criminals) that has been blooded as he has his clan's version of a plasma caster. This predator got himself killed due to the fact he got cocky and stopped respecting his prey.

  • @embercrow7781
    @embercrow7781 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    My understanding was that the feral predator in this film was visiting earth for the first time so the events of this film were his first ever encounters with humans and other animals native to our world. So I think as far as intelligence goes, it could just be assumed that unlike the jungle hunter from the first film who clearly had experience battling human opponents prior to his final fight with Dutch, the feral predator had no experience dealing with humans and possibly little to no experience hunting higher thinking life forms. Something I think we take for granted about the Yautja race is that each one of them is not just a different monster/antagonist for the sake of the film, but a different person/individual. Every film involving the predator (minus The Predator) has endeavored to make their predator different not just in gear or appearance but in personality and the way they conducts themselves. The jungle hunter in Predator was more patient and cautious and took his time rather than Feral who acted on impulses and was more aggressive and clearly preferred a more hands on method. It’s likely that Feral’s death at Naru’s hands was a large part of what shaped the entire Yautja race’s outlook on humans as worthy, whether as prey or in some cases (if you’ve read the comics) allies and prodigies. There’s a lot to say about the predators as a whole but that could be a whole series of videos on its own, I really enjoyed the video and I look for ears to the next upload 😁

      I've never seen a Predator movie but listening to other people talk about them, the amount of thought that the creators put into the worldbuilding behind the scenes is really fascinating to me. I thought the Yautja were just, y'know, movie monsters more or less. But the fact that they're all unique _characters,_ with thought put into _characterization_ is really cool, most franchises wouldn't put that kind of thought into it with a species that acts exclusively as antagonists and does not communicate. That's the first thing I've heard that's made me feel like hey, maybe I've been missing out by not watching these movies, lmao. I didn't realize the creators put so much consideration into making a monster that feels like a fully realized alien species.

Also, there were different species of humans coexisting in prehistoric times, (modern humans, neanderthals and denisovans) so it'd make sense that something similar would happen on the Predator home world

    I know this video is 5 months old, but I still love it! I'd like to offer a counter theory for the skull mask. Given that this Yautja is from a desert biome, it probably chose bone over metal, because of the excessive heat of its native biome. Wearing metal of any kind in the desert is a potentially hazardous experience, because the desert will heat up that metal to scalding temperatures. So, it would make sense that the mask that it wears on its head all the time be made of bone, which would not conduct heat so readily as solid metal does, would be chosen. This is also partially supported by the lesser amount of metal armor that this particular Predator wears (compared to the Jungle Yautja), and instead utilizes a shield.

    The main thing I saw in their hunting differences was how they used their environment which further supports the biomes they live in
    Jungle Predators: Appear smarter because of the amount of cover, opportunities and overall brain teasers thanks to the trees that support them and fauna that pose new hunting challenges
    Desert: Open landscape where cliff sides would usually be the more prevalent stationary ambush locations where as they mainly fight on the ground with shields because cover's a luxury they simply didn't have in that environment and standing their ground being the main option they're accustomed to. The lack of hunting opportunity probably "devolved" their tactics to suit the desert wasteland. These are just some observations of seeing wildlife and survivalists interact with these environments for so long, of course so interpretation's always open to change.
    I'd still love to see the wildlife they contend with to see how these tactics are utilized in their home turf because there's certainly a reason for them to fear injury enough to cloak themselves instead of make-shift camo and stationary traps like Dutch used.

    Hey Roan! A theory about Yautja cloaking tech inability to function in water has it that the cloak operates by bending light across surface area, in this case the Predator’s body. Water’s surface area is constantly in flux unless it’s stagnant, making light displace abstractly, pretty much overloading the cloak’s sensors and sending it to the Blue Screen Dimension until the software can get its shit together. Something similar happens any time the Predators are hit and wounded, to greater and lesser extent across the films as CGI tech has advanced. You see it most prominently in Prey, where the cloak collapses in small spots.

    Amazing video as always. My only nitpick is a minor one, being in regards to the intelligence difference. I believe that has more to do with the class system than it does actual intelligence. Yautja move up the class system based on how skillful they are on hunts. I believe the Feral Predator is either an Un-blooded or Young Blood. Likewise, The Jungle Hunter is a Blooded Predator, which would require a greater degree of wisdom and hunting skill. That would also explain how the Jungle Hunter was able to hunt arguably more dangerous prey (given their weapons) and take much less damage than the Feral Predator, and figure out traps multiple times.

It didn't feel like a copy of the other predators we have seen before, it had it's own personality and style and almost seemed a little inexperienced and careless but it felt like it enjoyed every second of combat and every kill. I hope we get more predator movies throughout different times in history, the franchise seems made for that and not whatever pred:upgrade tried to do. Lorewise: I am not a fan of anything upgrade expands on the lore, i don't like the idea of predators collecting dna samples to improve their own species and to me it doesn't fit the behaviour of the predators as they are portrayed in any of the other movies. If you only want dna samples why hunt alone, take trophies and revere them in such a way, why strike fear in your prey and play with it, why throw away your weapons and fight your prey honorably, why respect the guy who killed one of your own and give him a parting gift, why use all these different weapons and seemingly enjoy conflict and combat. Why if you are such an advanced species, don't you use any other way of collecting dna samples rather than slaughtering your target as a lone hunter. It was well established that the predators kill for their own entertainment and cultural admiration of personal strength through pretty much all of their behaviour and no indication for alterior motives were ever given, doesn't mean their couldn't be one, but the motives upgrade now projects into every predator is so specific that it contradicts the other movies. I don't dislike the idea of a self upgrading alien species but it is such a fundamental thing that it's hard to make it make sense with a previously established alien race instead of building a new one from the ground up, which would have been fine. Also the idea of them wanting the autism to improve their species is the biggest cringe ever to me and is only justified by giving the autistic kid litteral superhuman abilities. He uses a piece of the fugitive-preds gear to control the upgrade-preds ship, understands an alien language based on who knows what kind of base communication and understands completely foreign alien technology.
      Characters & Dialougue: I am totally fine with jokes and alot of them and I even like it when there are sudden toneshifts but this movie managed to make me cringe at almost every serious attempt to make a joke. The characters talk endlessly about bullshit I personally don't want in my predator film at all, atleast when it's executed this way. To many characters that serve the same pourpose of beeing mildly amusing and disposable as fuck with almost everyone having 1 gimmick and nothing else. There are some of the legitamately stupidest lines I can imagine in this movie... example: "he is growing an EXOskelleton UNDER HIS SKIN" out of the mouth of the biologist chracter, I hope I don't have to explain the stupidity of this line.
      Logic: Why don't finish off the preddog after braindamaging it into an earth dog puppy copy? They just let it wander off. Also why do they look so much like the predators, we had much better looking dogs in predators. Why not FUCKING SHOOT YOUR GUN at the predator when he is escaping, every guard in the lab walks up to the predator, rifle pointed at it and not shooting so they can be punched by him. The movies always made it clear that predators are still very mortal vulnerable beeings and to take on a whole facility of soldiers they would need their gear and TACTICS. Seeing one effordlessly berserking through so many humans while almost naked just destroys that feeling and it feels like a marvel movie to me. Why is it possible to take control of the upgrade-preds ship with a part of the wristguard from fugitive-pred? it makes 0 sense that he wouldn't use that super useful feature himself while being chased by said ship. Why is the fugitive-pred killing people in the typical pred way, hanging them from a tree, right after landing even tough he is here to help humanity. Same goes for why does he immediatly attack everthing when waking up, try to communicate with them first there is no good reason for you to assume you would get out of there alive by combat.
      Presentation: Cgi looks terrible and even though i like pracical effects, here they look worse than ever before. The upgrade preds design is everything i hate about modern creature design, looks like a pred fucked doomsday or something. Also making it so comically large actually made it less intimidating and scary to me. It also moves in such a lame and unspecial looking way, could be any cgi monster, nothing predator-y about it. There is a specific way the predator moves and you can recognize it even when performed by a naked actor, the upgrade doesn't have to move the same way obviously but he just has nothing to characterize him movementwise (or otherwise) except for big and strong. The pred-iron-man suit is also one of the worst deigns i have ever seen.
      (Once again, I am very aware this is all personal taste and opinion and when I state something as fact in here it is a fact of how I feel and I do not need to be reminded of that nor should I have to explain to you that what I write is my opinion and I am aware of that but I want to prevent that type of response-comment, I have said what's on my mind and would love to hear what's on yours, knowig we do not need to agree on any of it for the exchange to be fun :))
      This is mostly what came to mind at the moment, haven't watched that movie quite some time so I'm sure I missed alot but I thinks this goes some way to explain why I hate Predator:Upgrade and am banishing it from my headcanon entirely. I hope to hear some reasons for liking it from you in the case that you do like it, I had fun writing this and would have fun reading the opposite opinion honestly since I don't personally know anyone who likes this movie and I would love to know what you like about it.
      edit since i just saw one of your other comments: have not read any comics anf don't care about them, going off of my interpretation of the movies and nothing else (i even consider avp only loooosely in my headcanon)

      @Dd Dgd What lore specifically?
      You mean like the lore shown where the Predators hunt for trophies exclusively (If you're gonna take a DNA sample, why melt _ALL_ the meat away?) And how they're shown to ignore any prey where there's no sport in it? If you're doing it for DNA samples, one person is as good as the next, and a Pregnant woman would actually be best because of the _stem cells_ currently within her body.
      And I don't really consider the whole Autism plotline an opinion when it's _literally offensive to people with the disease_ and is actually a massive misunderstanding of both Evolution and the disease.

I wanted to see what makes people like the movie and in a way you gave me an answer, you just need a lack lf critical thought, an inability to formulate opinions and be immediatly so offended by opposing viewpoints that you go for personal attacks on people you don't even know. Thanks for that i will keep hating the absulute piece of shit movie you are trying to defend so ineffectively and know that there are no real reasons for me to do otherwise. Bye.

    I don't think the tracking bolt or the bone makes them less advance, I think it comes down to specific preferences and customs each clan has. There are people nowadays who still go on hunts using muzzle loader rifles, not because that's their only option but simply because they like it that way. I also love her adaptation as she learned the predators tactics. Like setting a trap in the trees because she learned how he moved around. Also I interpreted the scene after her brother died as a parallel/flashback to when her mom got the news that her father died. Because I too could not figure out why the tribe would already know her bro died.

    - Jungle Hunter from the 1st Predator
    - Feral Predator, a cool additional member of the species
    - Scar from AvP movie

      Not a bad list at all! Dark’s a pretty underrated predator in the EU let’s see here…my favorites in no direct order!
      -lightstepper, a one armed predator that was the first ever shown defeating a predalien, albeit with a humans help. One of the only predators to actually survive for his whole hunt and story.
      - Falconer, the most fair of the super predators with a pretty cool drone at his command.
      - Feral predator cool behavior with his first go on earth, a good mix of agility strength, and savagery.
      - Abel from AVP fire and stone, a really skill full but also pretty funny with his bromance with a human and ongoing quest to kill engineers.
      - the fugitive predator, another one armed predator that got caught by the government. Really creepy with his Red eyes and super long organic claws, he ends up taking down a whole advanced security team, but still ends up honorably blowing himself up after getting his gauntlet back.

    While this predator probably is young, it most definitely is not a adolescent or unblooded since predators are not allowed to showcase or wear throphies they did not hunt themselves so its mask would mean it had atleast done its first hunt.
    Its clan also seems to be borderline badbloods with how loosely it adheres to their honor code, the plasma disks it used and in the way those were used would instantly get it marked off as a bad blood.
    Then there is also the bitching out when he was getting beat by Naru's brother, this would also get it in trouble with their honor code.
    Besides that the armor and weaponry seem more cultural with the shield and its combispear that turns into a sword and club and that would also make sense why they use no plasmacasters.

    They even hunt differently just like earth animals, the jungle ones like in the first predator stricks at the right and perfect moment stalking the prey and if they get caught they'll try to still get to perfect moment to strike, circling a lot more. In the deserts being super fast, bigger and deal out more damage, like our feral friend in Prey, all the alphas we've seen also seem to be really scavangery just like most the desert animals on earth.

    I'm actually at a crossroad with this movie. It has its good moments, but there were questionable moments too. It's supposed to be set in the same world as the first Predator movie. Yes, this Predator was vastly different than the one Dutch fought given the time difference. I wished the fight scenes were more believable. Dutch looked to be 200+lbs, was in a military special force, and probably 6ft. Hits he took from the Predator he fought knocked him down and hurt him badly. Hits Naru took or blocked from her Predator didn't leave her any serious injuries. She's far smaller than Dutch...
