I'm 32 and I remember my grand mother telling me how important it was to know how repair things... From cars to sheets because you worked hard to earn and buy those things and you should be able to extract the most use out of everything you own. Given the world we live in today, I see the larger reason for reusing repaired things because we cannot be consuming the way we currently are. Thanks for this lovely video! You reminded me a lot of my grandma!
I was just thinking about how many products we completely WASTE. Oh have a tear in your sheet? Throw it away, don't learn to fix it... Or don't repurpose it as rags or sewing up something else. There's thousands of different stores all selling cheaply made, quick items every day. We as a society don't need new things ALL the time.
My mom reused a lot of cloth items for other things if it was beyond repair.
I kind of don't blame a lot of people, as in recent decades, doing things like that would be seen as tacky and you would get made fun of, even as a kid if you had a patch of different cloth peaking through your clothes.
Also-I just can’t find good quality things anymore so I fix rather than discard
@@marniedelano7030 You can find things if you set the price range for it. Those things that were great quality from 20 years ago? Or from your parents 30 or 40 years ago? Expect to double or triple the price... Just from inflation alone. It's the expectation that things should stay similiar prices which led us to having tons of this garbage today. How do you maintain low prices for the same product despite the value of the dollar going down? Cut corners and lower the quality.
I usually repurpose sheets as pillowcases.
I have found the hard way is that companies are manufacturing products to be cheap as to cut production costs. Some items fall apart so easily and just aren't worth repair. They shouldn't be made that way, but with the rise of social media more and more people only want 1-time use products.
Mending is a lost art. My grandmother taught me how to darn my socks. Thank you for taking the time to teach how to mend a bottom sheet. This is so valuable .
I would love to know how to darn socks the correct way. When I do it, they are uncomfortable to waer.
@@darlav673 there are really good you tubes on doing socks. watch a few to find one that makes the most sense to you and try their method. you can also try using a speedweave loom for socks and other mending (small holes) - have fun. & hopefully these will help
I like this method, I've nvr heard of darning b4. Will this work for a fitted sheet that was torn at the fitted seam part
@@nicolesewell7795- Maybe. There are books available on mending that include fixing torn seams. There may also be videos on that.
Just about to darn an older set of bedsheets since my current ones need to be washed and I don’t have the ability to wash and dry them at home currently, so this is quite useful to know, thanks.
"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" just became my new favourite expression.
I'm a library director and one of the things our library offers is a MakerSpace style Repair Cafe. Clothing repair is something people are always surprised to see. I'm sure some of my community thinks I'm nuts, but I really do try to promote not being such a disposable society, especially with the way things are today with "supply chain issues".
Our supply chain issues point up the vulnerability of 'just in time' stocking _and_ the way contracts lock people in. Makes it hard to deal with crises.
That 'fast fashion' cheap crap is only good for sandwiching between layers of real cloth to make comforters and pet beds.
How wonderful
Thank you so much. 🙏 This work is so important and provides so much more than just the individual repairs. Aside from saving money, directly helping your community, and keeping usable items out of our landfills, offering repairs for people in this way often mends their misconceptions as well and plants a seed for the future. 🙏 🕊️ ☮️
7 years since you posted this and it still deserves some love! I tore my doona cover last night and all the tutorials I could find were for mending clothes. Because I can hide a patch on the inside of the cover I'll probably do that, before darning/embroidering over the patch itself. But I've never done any fabric repairs before, and your video has given me the boost of confidence I need. Thank you!
My pleasure ❤❤❤
I am glad a video like this exists. Thank you
Happy to see people who still take time to repair instead of just replace!!! Thank you for this lesson..........I've not seen anyone darn since watching Grandma back in the 60's.
You are such a blessing!! Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without! My great-grand and great aunts said it all the time. The Great Depression gave them so much wisdom.
both my parents were raised in the GD!
My dad was raised in the gd, and my mom grew up poor in the 40s, I'm 43. My grandma taught me how to darn docks, which came in useful long after she passed when I started knitting my own socks.
I'm a university student who luckily got taught how to sew as a child, but I've never ripped a sheet before so I was a bit worried about how to properly repair it. Thanks to this video, I was able to repair it with no problems and learn a new sewing technique while I was at it!
I'm glad I could help
"Disposable society" I love that! I love repurposing and upcycling, but repairing what is nowadays is a lost art. I wish I'd seen this before I repaired my solid color sheet with a ladder stitch. I'll know for next time.
I love learning to repurpose, upcycle and fix stuff versus replace, my husband and amazingly mother in law, find that just, a waste of time 🤔 rather than waste more money, I'd rather take the time to repair, upcycle and fix/mend
I feel lucky who found this video before I did something myself. AndI don’t know what I’m doing. 🙈
I think it’s stupid that I didn’t learn this in school 🤔
@@SAJK0KAT- Bring back Home Economics courses. Those gave the basics for numerous household skills.
I'm a 55 year old guy whose GrandMother taught the benefits of being able to sew on a button, hem pants, and even turn old sheets into embroidered pillow cases. Some people think I'm crazy for fixing broken things, but I just don't understand why they can't do it themselves! Easy, therapeutic, and a sense of pride in being able. Your tutorials are direct and a bit funny. Nice job! Thank you!
Double ditto on that!
oh my goodness ,!!!! you have no idea how many sheets I have thrown away because of this exact problem I wish that things like this were still being taught to children so as they grow they know some of this stuff , thank you so much for this new learned technique, you'll never know how much I appreciate this.
I use iron-on 1/2" hem tape with a patch made from an old sheet and make a thin but strong patch on an otherwise sturdy and serviceable sheet. I applique the patch to turn in the ragged edge and it's as good as new.
"Oooh! Sheet darning!"-- an exclamation I never particularly expected to utter.
LMAO!!! Me either!
I used a torn sheet to make pillowcases five years ago, and one of the pillowcases recently tore in this same fashion. I was at a loss of what to do, but I’m confident I can repair it now! Thank you so much for posting this video ❤️
I just found this video and am so glad I can find stuff that will teach to upcycle, repair/fix/mend stuff instead of just replace... Thank you and have a wonderful rest of your day.
Boy does this take me back. My mom darned just as you are doing. She did a great job on sheets and socks. Thanks for helping me remember how great she was and how many things she did for us.
I watched your video a few days ago and since then I have followed your sheet darning technique on two fitted sheets that have been sitting in my closet just taking up space because they both had a tear in them. One had a straight tear and the other had an L-shaped rip. I was able to repair both tears and now I can use them again! It's definitely time-consuming but I found it relaxing and actually enjoyed the process and love the results! I have very vague memories of seeing this type of patch on my grandmother's towels, her house coat (cotton bathrobe), and a sheet, it was so long ago I can't quite remember the details but I do remember my little fingers rubbing the webbing patch of thread on her robe. I tried iron-on patches years ago and I disliked them immensely and did not want to waste my time using that method to repair these two sheets. I've tried different ways to mend them on the sewing machine but I was never satisfied with the results. I'm so happy to have found your video and want to thank you for your well-explained tutorial. ✂
Thank you for the detailed tutorial! My mum gave me a beautiful dress she made for herself in the 1970s out of Liberty cotton. It caught on something while I was wearing it and has a big L shaped tear - your video taught me how to repair it in a way that preserves the pattern of the fabric! It will still show a little bit but I don't mind, it's part of the history of the garment :)
Thanks I couldn’t find anything to help except this video. I completely agree with you. People throw away so much stuff that can be fixed. I try to fix everything. Now for my sheets!
Wow, I just noticed an L-shaped tear in my upper sheet and was going to mend it, so this vid has come in very handy. Thanks so much for continuing the great art of darning because we are running out of space in every landfill.
It is a virtue to be able to repair things. Thanks 😊
My Pleasure!
I used this technique to repair two small tears in a comforter I found at the thrift store. The repair is very sturdy. Thank you so much for posting this video!
thats so comforting to know 👏👏👏👏
Hi! I know this was a while ago, but I'm hoping you might reply. My cats tore this exact kind of holes in my new comforter last night. Grr. How did you stabilize the comforter (like the video author did with the hoop)?
Thanks!
I love how you are so practical. Our culture has moved so far away from practical mending. Thank you for taking the time to preserve the teaching.
My PLEASURE Honey! I am glad I am able to share this stuff while my hands are still able to do it!
I'm 31 and my high school batch was the last to have these practical sewing, cooking, baking and basic home DIY repairs class as part of Home Economics in the catholic school I entered. When I got married, my husband was really impressed that I know how to darn blanket tears from our cat's claws or even use a sewing machine. It's quite hilarious. I also don't like wasting as much as possible.
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for taking the time to show how to do this repair!
My Pleasure!
Thank you so much! My son just accidentally cut his brand new sheets. He feels so bad! I want to repair it for him. I have no sewing skills and have never been taught so this is so helpful!!!! And money saving. They were a splurge for sheets so I’m thankful to not have to throw it away
TH-cam must’ve heard my cries
I just found out my fav black cords have a tear like this and you just can’t buy them in Oz
I’m glad I watched this
I would not have used a safety pin nor a weaving stitch so I’ll try this method
Thank you ❤
Awesome !!! Reminded me of being a little girl and watching my mum darn tears in the curtains made by kitten claws. I really appreciated seeing the closeups too. Thankyou for the memory trigger and for reminding me how to do it properly. God bless
I'm so glad I found this video. Easiest explanation I found and I can't sew. Thank you for helping me save an expensive comforter I own. It came out great!
My ABSOLUTE pleasure!
Love it! I have some old, expensive soft, cool sheets that I hate to replace because it would be cost prohibitive today. Mending them won't make them last forever, but if I get a couple more years out of them, I'll be happy. I feel very satisfied when I can repair something. Thanks for the excellent tutorial!
I truly admire your patience and good spirit for sharing a helpful hack that many people would sincerely appreciate
My Pleasure...although I would not call it a hack..I would call it a life skill?
I am 58 and I am so glad my mom taught me how to do some sewing by hand and on the sewing machine. But every so often I don’t know how to do something so I have to TH-cam and thank god you ladies are willing to share y’all’s wisdom.
My Pleasure!
Sandra. how are you doing today
Im back. My dog ripped another hole in a different sheet. So i needed a refresher 😆 my last repair is still holding strong and i can hardly tell its there. Thank you for this video. Its a life saver.
WONDERFUL!
When I was little and watched old productions of Peter Pan, I was always fascinated that Wendy would sit and darn holes like a little mother. I was sad that I didn’t know anyone who did that (I had great aunts and uncles and grandparents from the depression era but they lived far away). I’m in my 40s now and I’m officially learning to darn by watching your video. I am determined to save things this way. And once I can’t use them anymore, they get repurposed or made into new things! Thank you for your video, I just found your channel today.
Sorry I am late replying! So Glad I could help!!!
I stumbled upon your video by chance. I'm so glad I did. I can't agree with all you've said. We live in a time where all goods cost so much, made so cheap and when issues arise it gets tossed or maybe reclaimed. I had to take home economics and thought this is so lame. My mom then taught me how to sew by hand and with a singer machine. I'm so glad I learned this and many many things my family, friends etc have taught me. It really payed off having yo sew on rank etc in Marines. We was given a sewing kit in Bootcamp.
I can pretty much do anything I need to from saving money to buy land to drilling a well, building a house, welding, fixing cars, trucks, etc. Now having small kids who grow so fast and clothing that costs more than my own, I will fix the buttons that pop off, rips, tears etc. I was sewing a small tear in my daughter's dress when this video played. Thank you for sharing this priceless tool for us all. I don't think most ppl realize how much money they throw away paying for everything that they could do themselves. Plumbing, electrical, water, pipes, toilet issues, basic things that happen and need fixed. Of coarse let the pros do the big, stressful jobs that take alot of skill but the simple things like this and knowing how to fix it can and will save all so much. Now that sheets cost $50 for trash, knowing how to do these skills are worth spending time learning and not money. You have a great day.
I have been using iron-on mending tape followed with a little machine stitched reinforcement 'cause my hands are so bad I can't hold a needle for very long! Your work is classic old school mending!
I have been using iron on patches on the back of the tear (fusible webbing between the item and a similar fabric, combined with machine darning with a closely matched thread for repairs for over 30 years. I can hand darn, but most items I repair with machine darning end up more sturdy and more invisible if you use small stitches and follow the grain of the fabric.
That is the same way I mend; but I am sure hand darning gives more satisfaction.
Thank you so much for this video. Clear and easy to understand, the tear is no more!
BRAVO!
Thank You, for creating & sharing this mending tutorial, OurHalfAcreHomestead 🕊 I watched this video several years ago, and thought ‘I’ll never be able to do *that*’ Now it’s 2023 and I’m doing this kind of mend on everything 😆 shirts, socks, towels . . . and completing the circle . . . my torn sheets 🤟🏾 Bless you
GOOD FOR YOU!! BRAVO!!!
Thank you so much! In just starting it right now, and although it won't be as nice as yours, I already know you helped me save my sheets! Thank you again!
I love your attitude Bev! This is why we no longer have heirlooms... we just throw them away.
One thing to add tho, if you are struggling to get a matched thread, undo the hem, and pull a few threads from the actual fabric and use those to darn.
Thanks for all the skills youre sharing, you are worth your weight in gold!
BRILLIANT!! Thank you!
I totally agree!
yes! that could totally work! haha! it brings new meaning to "seam allowance!"
I'm 25 and I don't like wasting things. I have been looking for this. I have the same rip but in my apron. This will help me. 🙏🏼
Oh my gosh, thank you so much!! Wish I had seen this a couple of years ago before throwing out some really expensive, nice silk sheets. It's so wasteful and unsustainable. I'm so glad there are people like you teaching us how to repair our things!!
Right I made stuffed animal sacks out of mine still reused them in a sense but I might have not if I had known !
This is just what I needed. Sheets are expensive, especially when the rest of the sheet is in great condition. Thank you for sharing.
Your demonstration is very detailed & your explanation very clear. Thank you!
Thank you!
Funny this just popped up when I was playing around. I have a queen size bed but its pillow top so hsve to buy king size sheets. I repaired a small rip in one of the bottom sheets . I used my sewing machine and zigzag back and forth until it was fixed. Just noticed that another shee has a small rip in it. Back to the sewing machine. If I ever get a large rip you bet I will be looking up this video. Thanks
Been watching for years. Had to take a break from you tube for a while while taking care of a thermally ill husband. But I looked you back up when the time was right to you tube again. Thanks for still being around. Alwas enjoyed your videos
2019, my dog just ripped my nice king size sheets I got for my wedding. Soooo pissed! Thank you so much for having this video up!!!
My Pleasure Honey!
@@OurHalfAcreHomestead made a rookie move and darned it inside out! I have plain white sheets. Ha! Oh well, ya live ya learn.
Mine tow. 2nd Pair. Grrr
What causes the L shape holes?? I have one in my down comforter
Thank You!!! Those were clear and understandable instructions unlike others I googled today. And Thank You for saying how long it took! I’m always flummoxed about time.
I have another sheet I need to darn this week! You are MOST welcome!
Great Grandma taught me this when I was 6 (I am 63). I was the only 7th grader in home economics who knew how to hand see let alone darn.
I went to the local school to teach quilting on lunch hours..only to find that the kids interested didn't know how to thread a needle...I ended up teaching them to hand sew..they each got a block done..but we never did get to actually quilting!
I learned something today! Thank you very much for teaching us.
It's my absolute pleasure.
Thanks so much for this excellent tutorial! I've done small darns in linens, but I didn't think it would work for a bigger tear. Wonderful job.
Thank you for this! Our dog ripped a hole in TWO expensive linen sheets and this is just what I needed.
WONDERFUL!
Well dang. You darned the Heck out of that sheet. This tutorial was just what I needed, had such perfect results and was oddly satisfying to watch and learn. Lol. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us how to do this. Sewing and repairing are skills we definitely need to teach, endorse and reinforce. Thank you again, best wishes and take good care!
I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this and thank you for reinforcing learning how to repair things. Going to use this repair on a couch cushion!
thank you so much for your tutorial! I'm 20 and I was taught how to sew, but not how to darn, so been looking for a darning tutorial so I can repair the holes in vintage clothes!
Thank you so much for your excellent video! My granddaughter was given a small pillow with a pillowcase before she was even born. At almost 12 years old she still sleeps with "pillow" every single night. A dog got hold of pillow and chewed on her making holes in the pillow case. My granddaughter is heartbroken. I am so grateful for your video because your clear directions and example have given me confidence that I can repair her beloved pillow. Thank you so very much!❤
HOW LOVELY! Thank you for sharing!
This is one of the best how-to videos I've ever seen! I can always count on getting the real deal when I see you've uploaded a new vid. Many thanks.
This is so useful, enjoyable to sit and do, saves money and landfill.
Exactly!
This really helped me learn how to darn! I was able to fix a couple of blankets a few months ago, and I'm coming back as a refresher to fix a stuffed animal I've had since I was little (she's a little lamb with no fur, and I wasn't sure how to fix the hole in her neck or the thin spots in her body, since she's made of material that's more in line with sheets than most stuffed toys), now I'm able to finish fixing my little friend
How LOVELY!! Thank you for sharing that!
Thanks for this video! You're right that people don't know how to repair things any more!
There is nothing Bev Volfie can't do!!!!! Your our hero! Thanks for showing us how to mend this type of thing.
My Pleasure!! Here is my sock darning video as well!

Thank you so much for this wonderful video. Straight forward with no hidden steps. Thank you thank you half acre homestead. God Bless you😊
You are so very welcome
Thank you so much for sharing this. It is so helpful! Great closeup on the video. I also liked how your commentary often explained why you did certain things, like strengthening the corner.
Just turned 19 and was bummed, thinking I’d have to throw away my king size sheets. While following along it took about two hours to fix my sheet, but it turned out fantastic! Another new skill learned today thanks to you
Good JOB! 👍
If the hole is too big, I sometimes cover it on both sides with a matching patch
Thank you SO MUCH. I have a bottom sheet I need to repair. And now I KNOW HOW TO DO IT!
Excellent video. Exactly how you do it…😀My Mom and Grandma showed me how to darn…
Thank you Miss Bev! I can't wait to do this and teach my kiddos! Have a Blessed day and please keep sharing your knowledge. I know I sure appreciate it! ♡♡♡
Thank you for teaching us how to repair my sheets! I love darning rather than buying new
You are so welcome!
I have learned something today. Thanks Bev, one is never to old to learn.
Amen Honey!
Great video- I darn sheets, socks, sweaters, whatever is needed. I love mending all kinds of textiles. Glad to see your video and know that I’m not alone!😊
This video was 7 years ago and I have that very sheet on my bed tonight
Old school, thank you. I've learned something again. I love this stuff. My kids say "My dad is a fixer" my wife says "He's a fixer-upper" :)
Bwahahahahahaha!! Thanks!
Thank you for the video! This same kind of tear just happened to my mattress cover and I wanted to see if there was a way to fix it before trying to buy a new one
Thank you for increasing my post-apocalyptic skillset! 😀
Fantastic video guidance, exactly what I need to fix a favourite silk shirt. I live on very throw away society island but highly value know how like yours. I try to repair everything within my capabilities and feasibility rather than adding it to our dump.
A big thank you 🙏
GOOD FOR YOU HONEY!
Wow Mrs V!
I'm a 23yr old male and I never thought I would learn how to darn a tear but now I do haha, I've always had the basics of sewing down thanks to my mum and nana but I never expected to expand beyond that however I am thankful to you that I have :)
No skill is a bad skill, and Im so glad you have the right attitude to being able to look after yourself. Obviously you have a great mum and nana too :)
FeedMe Bacon I taught my son everything I could even how to crochet. He is a man who is prepared for everything. I think it's awesome what your mom taught you and your attitude. My son know when he becomes a husband he will be ready for life and not be without skills.
Here is the sock darning video..It uses thicker thread and is easier to see..in principal
th-cam.com/video/H7Ml7reCXSs/w-d-xo.html
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!
I’ve never heard that. I love it
Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Or do without
Thanks Bev. That's my new favorite saying. I'm gonna put that on my wall.
A saying from the great depression that we should all still use today, although I swear they're making things that break or wear out faster so you'll HAVE to buy new. I grew up with a ton of siblings and no money, and I see no reason to replace something that's still good when I can just fix it and keep using it, especially when I really LIKE it.
Wow this is truly amazing! Thank you! We need more of this!
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for. I had a hole in a pillowcase and had no idea how to save it. Now I know how, thanks to this video. Thank you.
Kelly Jolliffe haha I’m here for that same reason!!! I have an L shape tear on a beautiful vintage embroidery pillowcase and wasn’t sure if I should patch it or how to even sew it up.
Good job. This is the best repair I have seen. Otherr options were iron fusible web onto the sheet or just stitch it together. Your darning technique is superior by far both in looks and for the strength of it.
I have a vintage sheet so i don't want to put fusible web on it.
Wonderful! I've fixed a few things also, making it last longer helps the check book!
Amen on that- some people aren't shown how to do this!
I know the basics but I don't know how to do this, specifically.
6:32 👌👌 golden words Ma'am! If my generation had been given these old time values, we'd be living in a better, more considerate world..
This is one of the best tutorials I have EVER SEEN! I love that you explain the mechanics of this. It’s exactly what my grandmother used to do. I’m hooked. Can’t wait to learn more from you.
Just one more reason why I love this channel!!!
Than ks Honey!
Thank you so much for this video! I repaired a pillow thanks to you! ❤
You’re welcome 😊
this is such a useful video! Ive been sewing since I was 8 and never learned this! great great video!!!
Thank you so much! I needed this badly. My mending tape on bottom sheet was useless so I’m going to do this❤🌻
wow wish id have seen this a year or so ago when my favorite sheets got a rip like that. thanks for the tip, next rip il know what to do!!
I am so grateful I came across this!. I have a flat sheet that heas several tears like this from my puppy and her chewy bone. The sheets are only sold in sets and it makes no sense buy a brand new set when I just knew there was a way to fix it!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!! Also, you are correct that children these days are bot taught to repair. They all think we live in a disposable society. What a shame!.
I'm just grateful that people are taking an interest in some of these old Arts
really great repair Bev! Enjoyed that very much! I am the kind of woman that repairs and patches her cotton "grandma panties" too. Hell when ur a big girl, it's pretty expensive to get panties and under clothes, so hell yeah I'll patch those bad boys if I can. But then again, I rewash and reuse plastic ziploc baggies and also have been known to slap a piece of clear tape on them if a tiny hole occurs, lol. Less crap in the landfills, that's what I say! Good on ya Bev, sheesh girl, is there anything you don't know how to do? Love ya!
Thanks Teri! Love you back!
Thank you for this post. I was able to repair my sheet after watching this video...although not as well as you, but it is done.
I've thrown away so many sheets because of this! Sadly. I have a 19" thick king sized temperpedic that's almost impossible to find sheets for...so throwing them away really sucks. Sheets that claim to be deep pocket aren't half the time. Next time I'll try this...
that is EXACTLY WHY I did this!
Brilliant! Thank you! I was taught to see, but NOT to mend! I did NOT know how to darn!
wow you are a repairing magician!
this is super helpful, thank you for sharing your method and your insight
My Pleasure!
beautiful repair job !
Great info! I'll put it into practice repairing my Snoopy & Woodstock fitted sheet. Many thanks!
Omg! That was awesome!!!!!! Thank you for sharing Mrs. V!
my pleasure!
Thanks! This was so helpful; just what i needed.
And i love the motto at the end.
love you bev...and thanks for teaching me too...xx
