- Thrushpelt is a sweety, and a talented warrior to boot. Plenty of fans adore this little buddy, and Bluefur considered herself lucky to have the tom as a friend through til his death. But just what sets him apart from other cats, and are there ways in which our love for this cat sometimes taints our views of the truth?

I just wish Bluefur would've told him about the kits whereabouts. He didn't deserve so much pain. He has already proven how much she can trust him.
I dunno how to feel about toms in general when Thrushpelt feels like the cat reincarnation of Jesus Christ simply by existing. There’s just so many Bramblestars and Lionblazes these days who are just arrogant and ignorant characters for the protagonist to stress about.

I wish there were maps with an ace thrushpelt who worries that if he tells Bluefur his feelings she’ll want kits-something he’d also like but doesn’t have it in him to create-and upon finding that she’s already pregnant he’s honestly just grateful to be a father for a short time without the expectations that come with being someone’s “mate”

Thrushpelt is by far the best example in Warriors of handling unrequited love, and I think that fact coupled with society's expectations that a halfway decent man should be rewarded for being Nice is why 'Thrush is a tragic babbu' arguments exist. With how many terrible love interests there are in this series, I can understand to an extent why people have that kneejerk reaction of 'why did this nice cat not get the girl?' But getting the girl should never, ever be seen as a reward for being nice. It feeds the incel expectations expressed by characters like Ashfur-Bumblestripe for one thing and undermines women's agency for another, but like.
As you detailed here, Thrushpelt didn't have a bad life! He was cherished friends with Bluestar, he had friends outside her, he had a life outside her bubble with training apprentices and the like. Thrush didn't sacrifice anything and to say he did undermines the strength of his character as it suggests his love was always conditional, that there were unstated motivations to why he cared for Blue even when he recognized she wasn't interested in a romantic relationship. Again, I get where the mindset comes from, especially given the cultural attitude towards rewarding nice behavior with romance, but it's best to nip that in the bud. You don't owe a romantic relationship to anyone simply because they're nice to you, and Thrush is strong and beloved specifically because his love goes beyond that superficiality.
Thrush is a good boy. Also: his nose being heart shaped? Amazing, inspired. BLESS.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for my part, well, I would say it is indeed tragic or at the very least sad that Bluefur didn't feel the same way about him than he did about her, but this statement doesn't mean I'm blaming bluefur in any way nor is it saying he deserved to have his affection returned.
It's especially tragic considering all the negative consequences caused by who Bluefur actually loved! I mean, even she wishes things were different at several points in the book.
I feel like the only time Bluefur really wronged Thrushpelt was when she decided not to tell him that the kits were (mostly) okay.
Thrushpelt, Fernsong and Shellheart are my top 3 favorite warriors dads.
Thrushpelt for being a great father figure to Mistykit, Stonekit and Mosskit.
Fernsong for being the first (and hopefully not last) den dad in Warriors.
Willing to raise the kits in the nursery (after their weaned) so Ivypool can stretch her legs, and go back to her warrior duties.
And Shellheart for loving his son despite his injury (Unlike a certain she-cat who doesn’t deserve to be called mother)

It always bothers me, that everytime someone makes a cute Thrushpelt video (and he deserves them, he's cute), it feels like half the comments are complaining about how Bluefur was "wrong" to not date him, or even that he "deserved" (as in she owed him) romantic love.
I love Thruspelt, specifically because he understood that Bluefur didn't owe him romance and still treated her well.

I don't know how much Thrushpelt truly deserves, I just wish there were other characters like him. All the characters in relationships where one doesn't feel the same way seem to end up in toxic relationships, or won't say no for an answer. So maybe instead, there can be other characters who are actually good WITHOUT asking for anything in return, like how I suspect Stormcloud likes Sparkpelt and is being a father figure to her kits, but doesn't care if they do become mates or not, or Fernsong being happy to raise his kits instead of Ivypool raising them.
Warriors needs more best bois.
I’d like to think that Snowfur and Thrushpelt got together in StarClan. Snowfur has probably wrestled with how she feels about Thistleclaw a lot but I’d like to think she’s finally let him go after acknowledging all the horrible things he’s done. Thrushpelt’s romantic feelings for Bluestar are long in the past at this point. They take care of Mosskit together and things just sort of fall into place (though I do think maybe Mosskit played matchmaker).

I agree with you mostly, I just really want good things for Thrushpelt and think he deserved a mate of his own. But, yeah, he still had a decent life and that obviously wasn't Bluefur's fault.
It definitely often feels like people act as if Thrushpelt “lost” in life, as if Bluefur was some kind of prize. Being ace/aro I have a bit of a hard time understanding romance and all the drama it produces, so situations where unrequited love is written as a life-ruining or horrible, cruel thing that only the strongest of people can stand has always confused and kind of annoyed me (even though I understand that those feelings are very real - in no way am I trying to undermine others’ emotions or something). Basically I like Thrushpelt because even in comparison to other “nice” characters he still feels like the only one who, as you said, was shown to have a normal life beyond his love for Bluefur that wasn’t permanently ruined by the fact that she didn’t love him back. And at no point did it ever seem like he tried to manipulate the situation into his favor. He just genuinely wanted to be her friend, and if things went further it would be in agreement between the two of them.
I'm straight and I'm satisfied with how thrushpelt's unrequited love was handled. Do I wish he had the option to have a true mate of his own? Yes but he was a strong enough of a character that his life wasn't pointless like so many other side characters and he didn't go the route of bumblestripe or ashfur.
I am mad that she never eased his pain by telling him the kits were okay.
He seemingly saw those kits as hus then he was told they were dead.
He grieved like a father would and was in so much pain.
Thrushpelt absorbs a lot of energy from the fandom that should be shared by at least 1 or 2 other characters, by virtue of being the only one who was rejected AND continued to have a positive relationship with Bluefur. Most caring+kind characters either end up lining up with a potential mate in the end or end up killed by a snake or something. Thrushpelt is the closest thing Warriors has to talking about other ways to love in a series full of quick hookups and romantic revenge stories. (And then there's Gray Wing, oof.)
It's important to decouple the grief of the rejection from this binary of 'Get Mate, Be Happy' and 'Lost everything' mentality. Rejection IS difficult, painful, and sometimes traumatizing, even if the person doing the rejecting is still a good and caring friend. Having examples of this is important, I think, even if Thrushpelt's character is going to be rejected by a certain type of audience member.
If you talked to Thrushpelt in StarClan he would probably say that he was happy with what he has with Bluefur/star, and wouldn't try to change it or think that he 'deserved' more. No cat gets exactly the life they wanted as a young warrior, and he still got to live one full of love with the cats he cared about. Maybe it'll take him some time to fully forgive her for lying about her kits, but I think he would and they'd still be close as ever.
As much as I'd love to see more Thrushpelt, it might be better to let another character share the load of such a heavy subject matter. He'll always be one of my favorite goodest boys though and it's great to see a video like this.
I'm a thrushpelt. My crush/friend is my best friend and we talk about everything. But in the end I know we are best as friends only even if sometimes I wish...No it wouldn't work. Be we are therefore eachother and that's what counts most. If we stay lifelong friends I see that as a huge win.
I actually have an AU where Thrushpelt becomes the deputy of Thunderclan. Honestly, I would totally love to see a Thrushstar AU
Thrushpelt was such a good character, he loved Bluefur/star so much, and the kits. Their friendship was refreshing and beautiful, and I wish that they would have at least given Bumblestripe that same trait, where he actually respects Dovewing's decision. We need more respectful, actually good guys in warriors, I feel like it's seriously lacking these days.
It does make me sad that Bluefur/star never told him the truth about the kits, and that he had to wait until he died to find out. But I guess I could also understand why she didn't tell him, and it was her choice. I like to think that their reunion in StarClan would have been incredibly sweet, she'd be anxious about seeing him again cause she hadn't seen him since he died, but his eyes would be warm and full of love. He wouldn't be angry with her at all and would be glad that she made peace with her kits and StarClan before she died.
I'd imagine when he got to Starclan and learned the news he would be relieved-and take care of Mosskit until Bluestar joined as well. That's my headcanon
Another great video! I love Thrushpelt as a character, but I agree that he shouldn’t be put on a pedestal for being able to accept rejection like any decent person (or cat lol) should. Although, I do slightly disagree with one of your points. I think Bluefur did accept Thrushpelt’s offer to be a father to her kits, even though neither Bluefur nor Thrushpelt explicitly confirm anything to the clan.
Like, allowing the clan to believe Thrushpelt is their father through omission is still allowing them to believe that he is their father. I know we don’t see many scenes with the kits in ThunderClan, but we at least know that Thrushpelt visits Bluefur and the kits right after they are born, he searches for them frantically after they are gone, and the kits themselves believe that Thrushpelt is their father prior to Bluefur taking them to RiverClan. If Bluefur did not want the clan to think Thrushpelt was their father, she would have either straight up said that he wasn’t (and just not named a father for them.) Or, she could have not confirmed nor denied the rumors about him being the father, but asked him to not act like he was their father (so he wouldn’t have visited right after they were born for example.) So, I think even though Bluefur and Thrushpelt don’t say it outright, they definitely do act in a way that implies that he is the father.
I definitely agree with your other points though. I think Thrushpelt made the best out of the relationship he had with Bluefur, and I think he probably would look back on his life with contentment (not bitterness that he and Bluefur didn’t have a “real” relationship.)
Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but I’ve thought about this a lot since earlier this year I wrote a novella length fanfic about Thrushpelt, focusing on his relationship with Bluefur!

I do think it was cruel of Bluefur to never tell Thrushpelt that 2 of her kits were still alive and well in RiverClan, but I recognize that this was ultimately her decision to make. That said, she should have trusted him to take it well and keep the secret. Based on all of his actions up to that point, it's very reasonable to assume that he would have kept the secret and been happy simply knowing that 2 of Bluefur's kits still lived. He clearly felt personally responsible in part for the kit's "deaths", as evidenced by his tireless rebuilding and fortifying of the nursery, so by telling him the truth she could have saved him a lot of undue guilt and self-loathing.
Anyway, we need more toms like Thrushpelt in Warriors. I was hopeful initially that Finleap would be like Thrushpelt, but alas, he became more of a Bumblestripe in the end. At least we still have Fernsong. 😊
I'm writing a pair in my own series where a guy likes a girl and it's really obvious but he's also more than willing to just stay friends and eventually rule over their city together as equals since she doesn't feel the same way. I wish there were more stories/characters like this; where two characters are close but don't delve into anything romantic especially a romance forced upon them. Of course, people are free to ship them however they want so long as we remember what the source material is actually telling us and we don't twist it in narrative unless it's an AU or something
I think the only way Bluefur ever did Thrushpelt wrong was letting him believe her kits were dead. She allowed him to be their father and as their father I think he deserved to know they were safe.

I also dont like that everyone thinks she needed to love him because of all of the things he did for her. He was perfectly fine with not having her romanticly and she cant control who she loves romanticly just like he cant, but him having to go through the pain of not knowing the kits were alive, in my eyes, was kinda of cruel but then again he wasnt their real father so Bluefur had everyright and even said she regrected not telling him, its just something i wish was a little diffrent

When I first read Warriors and eventually got into the fandom and heard about Thrushpelt I thought his name was Trashpelt. For a GOOD few years. I thought: “well either he sucks or his parents hated him if he’s named Trashpelt what a HORRIBLE name. Then I found out that Thrush was a bird. It wasn’t more than 2-3 years later I found out his real name and that he wasn’t Trash. Thrushpelt is a good boy.
I love Thrushpelt, he is just such a great guy. Honestly, I hope he and Bluestar are still great friends in StarClan. Heck, I even had a headcanon as a kid that Thrushpelt acted as a father figure to Mosskit in StarClan before Oakheart joined. He and Mosskit have a close bond, and the two of them often hunt and train together in StarClan. Sure you can say StarClan doesn't need to train to fight, but living up there until the living forget you can be a long life, so showing Mosskit some old battle moves could be a fun way to pass time and relive his life in thunderclan while in StarClan.

I believe you’re conflating “wanting Bluefur to date him” and “giving him a lot of credit and wishing him more”. There are always those who think Bluefur was wrong somehow, but that’s not why I want more for Thrushpelt. I want more because he deserves it. He deserves love even if that love isn’t romantic or isn’t Bluefur.
I kinda wished that after the kits goes missing situation, he would meet someone else and overcome his feeling over bluefur, knowing that he died alone with a unanswered love, griefing bluefur's "dead" kits, never actually getting to be a father as he clearly enjoyed to and never learning that 2 of the kits survived and became fine warriors, is so depressing to me, he deserved better, It's cool that he was a good friend to Bluefur and all, but I feel like his entire existence as a character revolved around HER interests, that's just sad

They are several instances were Squirrelflight is bothered by his overprotective attitude and annoyed at how he wants to intrude in her life while she's still dealing with a sort of break-up. And he already tries to murder Firestar in Sunset, so like two weeks after she gets back together with Bramble or something.

I always thought of their relationship as somewhat of a “plutonic marriage”, at least to the outside cats. They weren’t romantically or physically involved with each other but still friends who genuinely had a good relationship with one another. And while the rest of the clan assumed they were mates, and kinda eventually forgot, the two knew the real situation and didn’t overstep boundaries that they had set. And that’s what’s so nice about these two! They never pushed each other to keep up an act, they just put out the options and let their clanmates think whatever because it wasn’t something they needed to know
The fact he didn't get mad at her for not choosing him, the fact he didn't press for who the father of Bluefur's kits were, the fact he even offered to be the cover-up and actually CARED for the kits that weren't his kin... GOSH, what is there not to like about this good boy? If any cat deserves a reincarnation who isn't "OH MY STAWCLAWN THIS CAT HAS BEEN IN THREE PROPHECIES, LET'S GIVE HIM ANOTHER" (like the Erin's would do, let's be honest with ourselves), it's Thrushpelt. Maybe even reincarnate both him and Bluestar, as friends who get closer due to some omen or prophecy surrounding the two of them, but still JUST STAY FRIENDS.

Maybe, but there's no reason to suspect him over any other tom. They did fix the family tree though, so willowpelt is no longer mates with her brother.

I have a really dumb headcanon that Thrushpelt found out about Thistleclaw’s behavior with Spottedpaw, decided it was screwed up, told Sunstar, which convinced Sunstar to not pick Thistleclaw as deputy anyway. Not knowing this, Bluefur went ahead and gave up her kits, and Spottedpaw felt so guilty and embarrassed because of everything that she just… helped. Later, Thistleclaw attacks Thrushpelt near the RiverClan border, and they mortally wound each other. Thrushpelt dies with Spottedpaw and Bluestar by his side, and tells them to lie and vaguely say he died a hero instead of saying he died fighting another warrior of his Clan. Thistleclaw limps off and dies alone, and Bluestar honors her old friend’s wishes.
I wanted Thistleclaw to have some punishment for what he did, and I want Thrushpelt to have a more ceremonious ending than “idk greencough”

I know i’m getting personal here & you didn’t ask. But i relate to stories of Thrushpelt & Ashfur or others alot. Feel free to ignore my ramble.
For me theres been 1 friend at my side through thick & thin. I’ve had MANY horrible friendships. I’ve had nothing but abusive relationships. She accepts me fully and treats me with a humble kindness no one else has ever given me. We’ve known each other for near 14 years.
The problem is. Her treating me so well has made me develop feelings for her. I trust her. I feel she’d treat me well. But she’s Asexual and blandly uninterested in all aspects of relationships. She liked me for a flicker of a moment and brought me close. Than dropped interest like a rock.
She had ample opportunity to take advantage of how much i liked her. I showered her with gifts and attention. She simply told me i’m waisting my time & money and she doesn’t want me to so it all in vain. Just to never be loved back. Her not taking advantage only made me like her and trust her more.
I CAREFULLY tried a RARE hand-full of times over the years to see if she’d change her mind. But each time she turned me down & says i’m just a very valuable friend to her. And that i’m not being a bother by trying. She just doesn’t want me to waist my time.
I still kept most of my emotions/desires suppressed and quiet. Eventually i could barely control it. I started desiring to attempt being forceful. Like so many of my abusive exs. Than i thought, “I’m a monster… i can’t stay or i’ll betray her…” so i ran away.
After a year she found me again and was, understandably upset. So i decided to tell her everything, including my bad wants. She just kinda shrugged it off. Said, “well if you did that. It’d be like smacking me in the face. Unpleasant, but not a reason to stop being your friend. Truthfully i don’t think you could possibly ever upset me besides when you left like that. And really i don’t think you’d do something like that no matter how much you wanted to. It’s not who you are.”
So were friends again. I just find better ways to suppress my feelings.
I’m defiantly not as kind or respectful as Thrushpelt. But i’m definitely not horrible like Ashfur. But i feel like a cross road between.

Honestly, I think it was really messed up of Bluefur not to tell Thrushpelt that the kits were alive and safe (or at least two of them were). He clearly cared deeply for them, possibly thinking of himself as a father figure even and he almost certainly would’ve kept the secret. It just seems unnecessary cruel on Bluefur’s part to Let him grieve.
