- So we purchased these two Sun Dolphin Journey 10SS kayaks to enjoy and quickly learned how poorly they tracked.

We purchased two rudders/skegs on Amazon (link below) and you can see how we adhered them to our kayaks in the video but what is really interesting is that our kayaks have two different style bottoms despite being the same exact model!

These were worth adding....depending upon the bottom of your kayak you could add two as some have suggested. Get the skegs here amzn.to/2S0l4Ga and the goop here amzn.to/2Ft5Lo0 - We plan on doing this for Richies kayak in the spring so stay tuned for how that works out! Thanks so much for visiting :-)
I bought two of these near the end of 2019. The hull has been completely redesigned and has two large built-in skegs along with a center tunnel and two side tunnels. Ours track perfectly straight. No need to add skegs like on the earlier models. There are only two scupper holes now, both under the factory included seat pad. The seat pad is of the same material as the seat back. I added a foam hunting pad from WalMart for added cushion. It also comes with two rubber scupper plugs. It seems that SunDolphin listened to the reviews and made changes. We are 100% pleased with our Journey 10 SS’s.
That is great news! Thanks so much for sharing :-) Stay healthy and safe.
I just bought a Sun Dolphin journey and a Sun Dolphin Aruba both have the same molds and the bottoms look way different than both of those kayaks that you have
Wow, thank you guys for posting this. I really needed this for the upcoming season. Me and the wife have 2 with the same situation, different bottoms. Definitely gonna give this a shot.
Thanks for watching! FYI: we want to put two on the bottom of my husbands because we think it will work better so you might want to do that instead of the one like we did. Hope you enjoy them!
You didn’t have to limit yourself to just one in the middle. Two on opposite sides even if their angled would work even better. I mounted two on my ascend fs12 and they pitched in toward the middle slightly but made it much easier to mount since it was a much flatter surface. Made a huge difference in tracking! Have fun kayaking! Great video
The Boz thanks for watching and commenting! Yeah, we thought if that after the fact. We figure we can do that on my kayak (the one with the trench down the middle) in the spring. Hopefully we can get the one on there off without too much trouble. My wife’s kayak tracks better so we’ll probably leave hers alone.
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid I'm not sure it is necessary to remove the middle one. Hopefully someone with actual knowledge would chime in as I am curious myself.
@@OJA1965 We actually never changed anything yet, it still works fine!
Great video. I recently got a lifetime daylite kayak and it did not track all that great. After watching your video i decided to add two skegs. I am not handy at all but watching your video and showing how simple it is gave me the confidence. Followed the same steps you guys took minus the heat gun. Tried it out for the first time today and definitely helps a bit. Thanks! And keep making great videos!
So glad it worked out for you! And happy that the skegs helped some as well. We really appreciate your watching and commenting :-) Enjoy
Yeah I agree, the bigger the gob... looks like a success. I like the vest. Tim
Thanks Tim!
Nice job. I have thought about doing this but was concerned that it wouldn't stay on. The new new sun dolphin 10ss has 2 small skegs molded in now. At least the company is listening and working on improvements.
Comfortably Roughing It it’s good to hear the company is listening to customers! These did make a difference and were worth putting on so far for the $10 they cost! If they are out on correctly they should last a while...
Haha, had no idea they were called a skeg. We lost ours on our blow up kayak when we went down the Truckee river last summer. Definitely hankering for real kayaks...someday. Anyway, saw you on Ray Hayden's channel. This account is not our main one; I just use it to help follow/support other creators. I like what I see and will check out a couple more videos after this.
Jane: Life with Ken and Jane thanks so much for visiting! I saw you on rays channel too and intend to check out your channel too!
Update: This skeg modification is the bomb! Thanks so much. I was out on Saturday on my Pelican Catch 120 (notorious for less than desirable tracking). The modification that you detailed is spot on! So easy and such a big difference. Thank you so much. Paddled 10km - approximately 6Km of that was in rough water.
Nicole Lewis thank you so much for letting us know! So happy that it helped. Enjoy your paddling ❤️❤️
I just realized how far you said you paddled and all I can say is wow!! That’s a lot of paddling! AWESOME ❤️👍❤️
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid I volunteered for the Ottawa Riverkeeper 4Km open water swim! :-)
Nicole Lewis very nice!
I just picked up one used after watching your and a few other reviews. Your comment on it feels tippy but it's not was spot on. Out in it 3 times now and was used to it after the first hour. Like the commenter above mine has two small skaggs. Seems to track ok for me. Easy to fish out of.
So glad to hear that! Appreciate the feedback and happy that you are enjoying it! Have a great day :-)
the bigger the gob...LOL...I think you and Ken had the same teacher
Jane: Life with Ken and Jane 😂
Looking forward to your adventures on the water.
Thank you!
Dropping another LIKE on your video, Watching and Supporting!
Just noticed a whole bunch of your comments were in the spam folder! Thanks to one of your videos that taught me to look in there I found them! Along with real spam too :-)
Dropping by for another view of this one👍
Life with Ken and Jane much appreciated❤️
what is the last two of the hull number. that will tell you year model? which is older design?
Great video. Does this glue smell? Like, can this be done indoors or the glue has some kind of solvent like acetone (I don't have a yard)?
The glue definitely smells but you might be able to get away with doing it in a room with open windows and fans and then leave the door closed.
Always some kind of fill the channel with some plywood or plastic probably some dowel rod 3/4 in 3/8 in
Thanks for this video. I am going to do a similar mod to my Pelican Catch 120 NXT. How durable was the skeg on the kayak without the groove?
So far so good! It’s lasted great and actually helped a lot.
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid So I just installed the skeg on my Pelican Catch 120 fishing kayak. Hoping to get out this weekend to try the kayak with the skeg now! I was out early last week for the first time and noticed the poor tracking.
Nicole Lewis let us know how it goes!!
Did the ear plugs fix the water in the kayak problem? I am very interested in this kayak. I have never been in one before so it should be interesting
Sherry Bushey yes! The ear plugs work great. Same are still in and still works. FYI this was our first time and we are in our 50’s and did fine! It’s so much fun😊
I have the SS10 , i love it but but boy is it unstable. Looking to add an outrigger to mine.
I know it feels unstable but I think it’s much more stable than you think...it really takes a lot to tip it.
Creating A Simpler Life yea,it’s actually pretty stable😂plenty of times I should’ve fallen out but didnt😂
NoahExploraDora same here! Lol. It’s s learning experience and lots of fun too!
Where did you guys get your skegs and goop?
On Amazon. There are links in the description below the video. They are affiliate links but that doesn’t affect the price you pay. We just get a small commission if you choose to purchase. I’m sure you could find them in other places as well. Good luck!
Hmmmm........maybe those drain holes under the seat can be the seed to bolt on some sort of skew devise.
David Hefner interesting!
How did the Goop hold ?
Still holding!
Couldve just put two of them on the one with the groove in the center. On either side of it, like a surfboard
That actually would have been a better idea!
I would of placed in on the flat area
👍
Neither of yours looks like the hull on mine. I have a sundophin 10 SS, got mine for 199.99 at tractor supply.
Interesting. I guess they have changed the mold several times to try different hulls. I wonder if yours tracks better? Great price too because we were in Tractor Supply yesterday and they had them on sale for over $200. Have a great day and enjoy your kayak :-)
How is it? Was planning on picking one up at tractor tomorrow
Sean Corriveau wondering if you got one and how you like it?
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid just stopped raining. Headed out to get it and going fishing in the morning
Sean Corriveau hope you like them as much as we do!
5:30 she heard that
Daisy Mae lol
Hi seems like the ss10 does have tracking problems I solved mine buy building a nice electric motor kit for mine you can see it at my channel verdell parent ,,it has helped the tracking but is not a cure for a bad design the good is when I get a better handling kayak I have a nice electric motor kit I can use
Verdell Parent that’s great! Will definitely check that out👍❤️
