They weren't making any money. They were literally trying to capitalize on the grunge craze with this album. 70's KISS will always rule Supreme.

@@michaelmacleod6517 Paul was lip syncing the last 10 years of his career. I don't want to hear about Ace and Peter's playing ever again. It's so overrated that they had people pretend to be Ace and Peter for 20 years while they were filling up arenas. Their career was over until they put the makeup back on. Accept it.

It's sad how Kiss ignore this album. Not to hear one single song, live. I love every song of it. It's dark, it's heavy, it has personality. Too bad most of the fans prefer them to play only the classics...

    • @feministcunt6838
      @feministcunt6838 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

yeah, I don't understand why , like you said: the fans prefer the classics. KISS played live the same songs because the audience (most of them) don't know the obscure songs, but also they don't have to put any effort on playing others because people keep going to their concerts. I love this album. Carnival of souls and creatures of the night are both my #1 albums of all time. This album is a fucking masterpiece.

Absolutelly accord! As with THE ELDER, the seem to forget when musically go to other zones. And certainly most of the fans prefer the more commercial and light version of KISS...just some as us prefer its darker and deeper version of KISS...

I could watch at least an hour documentary on the recording of this release. It's one of my very favorite KISS releases of ALL time and I've been a hard core fan since the early days as a child growing up when they first came out when I was only 8 yrs old in 1974. I think they really reached a mature peek in their career when they did this one...I also felt that with the Elder (keep in mind it was a soundtrack for a potential movie) The diversity of their playing and sound is so wide yet they keep the same flavor and signature feel with their lyrics and style. I cherish this era a lot for many reasons. Incredible production all the way around on everyone's part~!!!

That last chord and the group picture makes me sad every time I watch this about that this era ended. And it ended much too quickly. The best they have ever been regarding musicality, energy and focus. Great times, Bruce was one heck of a guitar player.

Reunion was an incredible and great thing for many fans.
That said, i'm totally agree that it is the Bruce Kulick "and" Kiss album.
Bruce, a talented and humble (too much?) musician, great guitarist, a part savior of Kiss (with the Eric's) deserved to print of his hand a Kiss album and it is this one.
The underrated but excellent and one of heaviest Kiss albums, the well named Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions.
Reunion was already on that Bruce was still working on this album, making bass, guitars and many productions works. So yes, it would have deserved a tour before making Reunion but as said, business is not waiting...
Thank you Bruce Kulick for this album, this is yours and after that, you walk alone...

When I bought the MTV Unplugged album, I looked at the photo of Bruce, Eric, and the four original members, turned to my then-wife, and joked, "Those two guys are like, 'We are SO fired now.'"
Sad to have been so right. I mean, yeah - I saw the reunion tour too, and Singer's been back with the band since Peter glitched his ride AGAIN. Carnival of Souls, though, is the sound of a band that's not trying to sound like KISS, and it's a shame that band got strangled right as it hit its stride.

They want another Destroyer, or Rock N Roll Over, Or Creatures, but when Kiss ventures off to explore new ground like this, its not well received and rejected and dismissed as a commercial failure... So, we end up with safe bullshit like Monster, and Sonic Boom! Fuck the ball and chains of the make up and spandex and continue to explore as an artist and grow....I love this album....it's honest, and has the finger prints of Bruce all through it....totally different band then the lunch box and pinball machine selling supergroup!

To you guys who can't find it on the Kissology Vol 3: Just klick in the "Kissology" logo in the menu.
Obelisk2290: No, this wasn't supposed to be the reunion album. After MTV Unplugged, they went back to do a new album with Eric and Bruce. But as you all know, the reunion DID happen, right after when Carnival of Souls was finished.
Take a notice on the recording dates, between nov 1995 -jan 1996. But the album itself was released in 1997!

carnival of souls is such an odd anomaly. it's bad by kiss standards, being compared to destroyer or love gun or even creatures that even shares a darker tone- but by its own it's actually pretty enjoyable and has very clean and precise production.
it's very obviously a brainchild of gene and bruce and it makes me wonder what it would've been like had gene leaned more into grunge or more experimental music of the time as a side gig. imagine gene collabing with Danzig or rob zombie. he's obviously got a taste for the performance art and horror so I wonder what he thinks of marylin Manson or slipknot.
as great and successful as the reunion was, it's a bit predictable in hindsight. the other timeline where gene makes more goth oriented music seems interesting.

I do agree with Paul in his book that Kiss would not be believable writing dark, brooding songs, and he's right, they're really not. As usual, Paul blames someone else for this "misstep", and once again, it's Gene. This album is the 90's equivalent of "The Elder", both are good albums, had they been made by someone else. They're just not good Kiss albums and what they needed at those phases of their career.. This is another instance where Kiss jumped into then-current musical trends; there was the Disco influence on "Dynasty" in 1979, then there's grunge and down-tuned metal here.

I can appreciate the heaviness of the songs and even think there are some cool things going on here. But watching KISS once again bowing to the "Hip" music for the time just seems a little desperate especially for guys in their mid to late 40's. Certainly less embarrassing than "I was made" but a tad cringy. Cheers!
