The p548 is still my favorite, i hope they choose to continue that model, tooless tensioner and feels sturdier, i work at depot so I always check out the ryobi stuff

This has some major differences besides just the difference in the bar length: WHISPER SERIES technology & HP brushless motor are the main two. This means the chain saw will run under 59 decibels, at even more power, run time, and over all life.

@@RYOBITOOLSUSA unsure if we are comparing this saw with the p548 which is also advertised as having a 12" bar just like this one and it also has a brushless motor, just like this one. The only difference I see clearly is this model does not have tooless adjustment like the p548. Did Ryobi change the design because users were having issues with the chain tensioner of the p548? Does this one have faster chainspeed. Which model is better and why? Can we see a side by side comparison?

@@davidlaws6119 all valid questions. Based on the home depot product listings it appears this unit has a chain speed of 20mps (meters per second?) where the 548 has 9mps. I find it interesting that this unit specifies 10” max log diameter but nowhere on the 548 do they specify max diameter
I’m tempted to buy both units and just return the worse of the two if Ryobi can’t come back with clear differences

@@davidlaws6119 I’ll mention that the 548/549 has phenomenal reviews. This unit is too new to have a substantial # of reviews anywhere. (Ryobi’s site only has 13 reviews and Home Depot has 52, both of which are too few for a useful average)

@@Travisrogers87 I bought the whisper and although i had considered it had a narrower chain, it didn't register until i had it in my hands. A narrower chain means quicker dulling and extremely shorter chain life. Therefore, i started looking for a replacement chain to have on hand as is a good idea with any saw. To my surprise, i couldnt find one in stock anywhere and given it is an odd sized chain, most manufacturers such as oregon do not make anything interchangeable. I did find a Stihl chain that would fit it but i had already decided that this saw was not for me. I returned it and ordered the 548. The chain speed is negligible and i was actually surprised at the speed of the 548. Another thing about the whisper that concerned me was the hand clearance between the foregrip and hand guard. They are so close together that the hard plastic of the hand guard was actually cutting into my knuckles and it cannot be adjusted to be further from you hand. I'm sure the whisper will make faster cuts since the chain and bar are narrower but i personally value chain availability and lifespan to be of greater importance. The one concern i have about the 548 is that reviewers commented how the chain tensioner eventually stretches and fails to properly tension after extended use. Since this saw is one of many for me and it will not be used often, i did not foresee this being an issue for me. Hope this helps, let me know how it works out.
