Says "Don't get too salty" and immediately proceeds to give the noble clarinet a C tier rating. Bastard.

As an (electric) Bassist i feel deeply offended.
Since I'm a Bassist though I'm kinda used to that.

I liked the video! Here's hoping that you don't get assassinated by the alto sax mafia. We all know they have gotten too big over the past few years and nobody dares to speak up out of fear of them entering the door behind you whilst you're writing thoughtful TH-cam comm

Finally, I can now hold an opinion on jazz instruments!

As an electric and upright bass player I agree with your rankings- electric is only needed in fusion, funk, and rock- the upright bass is perfect for jazz though- a steady walking bass line can make and song sound like butter. Also my drummer homies on the kit should be in S tier.

You forgot alot of s tier picks: bari sax, rhodes, trombone, jazz violin, jazz flute and finger snaps

Man, too unforgiving to the alto sax. Do you not like Bird, or Cannonball, Sonny Stitt, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, Ornette Coleman?!
None of this is elevator music. Please reconsider.

Exactly! Benny Carter is SOOOOO underrated it’s unreal. On one hand, I can understand that it could be perceived as the tenor sax’s inferior (and I agree with that completely) but putting it below clarinet (and even vocals) is borderline sacrilegious. Again, it’s 1000000% their opinion, and I have no power in changing that, but I do feel like alto sax does play a big part in jazz in it’s own regard. Cool video nonetheless 👍 I respect that they don’t fear the power that us alto players have 😳🥷

As a classically trained vocalist I have to say that I can’t stand vocal jazz. I love the piano to pieces. Jazz vocals sound corny AF though.
    Very entertaining video btw.

Piano is f tier for me lol. No one wants to hear your 10 minute, long winded solo. Piano is best supplemental imo.

  • @Baackus
    @Baackus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Jazz vocal in F tier..... YES. THANK YOU!
Upright bass is in C or B tier for me, the solos are so low you can't hear them, the slides sound funny, and it seems to be so much effort to play.
But they do sound good in a trio and are a must.

Personally, I usually don't like singing in jazz, but sometimes it fits well for me, like th-cam.com/video/RZ9gS-bFBbU/w-d-xo.html&ab for example. Overall I think it is better in jazz than clarinet so I give it a B tier.

Also if you get bored waiting for the intro, skip to 0:50 in the video.

I disagree with a few of your opinions. As a Saxophonist and Cool Jazz listener, I'm pretty biased. Though I agree with your ranking of the Tenor Sax, I believe that the Alto Sax has some merit. Listen to Paul Desmond's album, Bluebird's Best, and tell me the Alto Sax isn't sublime. I don't like playing Alto, but when played well, like any instrument, it sounds beautiful.
I was also disappointed to see the lack of a trombone or a Baritone Saxophone. Gerry Mulligan, widely regarded as one of the greatest improvisers in Jazz history, was a killer baritone saxophone player. Give his albums "Jeru" and "Night Lights" a listen. "Night Lights" is one of my favorite jazz albums, period. He also played clarinet extremely well.
The vibraphone has merit, too. It was practically made for Jazz, and its unmistakable, laid-back sound is the background to many a great ballad. And let's not get started on Jazz Guitar- Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Jim Hall come to mind. I'll make my own tier list shortly.

Check out the song "Grama Grass" if you want to hear an excellent soprano. Also Kanzaki Hisaaki's Litt;e road Gang Album has a ton of Soprano gems on it. Soprano is S tier for me.
