  • www.jonpeters.com/ In this video I build a shadow box frame for a painting by the artist Stuart Shils. I've made a few videos on how to make frames, so in this video I focus more on the painting and finishing then the building. So if you need a bit more information, check out my channel for more videos on framing. To see paintings by Stuart Shils copy and paste his name into Google images.

    Jon, your knowledge of art and the many different methods and styles of framing the art work, photographic or oil painting or other mediums instills much confidence in the viewer. ( Me in this "for instance" ), you seem very relaxed in front of the camera, you know what the tools are commonly referred to. Many videos I have watched, the person or persons have little clue how to operate the tools let alone know what they are commonly called. Personally I am thrilled that you present these videos for so many of us to learn from. Everything from types of paints, abrasive papers, to dust masks . Any of the frames I have made Jon, were the results of watching your videos. Shop safety included. Having such background knowledge is key here as I previously stated. Thank you Jon.

    Am blown away by the fact you are framing a Stuart Shils - I live in the west of Ireland - north Mayo and met Stuart several times when he was over here at Ballinglen Art Foundation in Ballycastle, Co Mayo.... thousands of miles from you! His paintings are beautiful - many are of the gorgeous light here in the West of Ireland & he is a lovely man, a real gent... anyway, delighted to find your site and looking forward to learning lots from you. Best Úna, Killala, Co Mayo

    Very beautiful frame job. One thing that occurred to me is that will a picture look better if it's gallery wrapped and sides painted too. That way the stapples will not be seen as they are at the back of the stretcher bars. What do you think?

    I like the shadow box picture frame idea. Can give the illusion it's floating in the frame too. Pretty risky to nail that inside support piece on the way you did. Your nail could have shot out through the face or back side. Why not nail it from the outside of the frame? You nailed the miters together from the outside.

    Jon, I love all your videos. I am going to make a frame for a soccer jersey. Have you ever made one? Also, do you think 1/8 inch plexiglass would be good? Thank you!

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrMaritoJavier not for a soccer jersey but I've made a lot of frames and 1/8 works fine

      MrMaritoJavier 1/8" perspex/plexiglass would be perfect for a Jersey - I've done 100's of them.
      I would be curious to know why Mr Peters thinks Plexiglass would not be suitable.

      Tom Martin I think he meant that he hadn't made a frame for a soccer jersey, himself, but that 1/8" plexiglass should be just fine. Correct me if I'm wrong *****

      Jerseys generally require a vary large frame. Using plexiglass in lieu of glass reduces the weight of the frame substantially.

    great frame, but I would have made a narrower reveal so you cant see the staples in the side of the painting's stretcher frame.

    this is floating style, not shadow box... shadow box should have glass or plexiglass on top to protect the artworks....

    Really great framing video. Solid work. Too bad the artist did a sloppy looking staple job on the sides of the canvas.
