To any beginner discouraged about how their dovetails are coming out as you fit them together, always complete the projects. Water based glue will actually swell the joint a tiny bit, a lot of gaps I’m upset about aren’t even visible by the time they’re glued and planed flush
James I’ve watched this video multiple times. I’ve looked for a shadow box that I can commemorate my 2 best friends that I lost over the last couple years. This one is exactly the concept I’m looking for. Thanks so much
Very nice and I was blown away that you cut the front off with a hand saw. There’s countless videos on how to get this right with a table saw, much less with a hand saw. I gift like this is something that I sure your Pastor and his family will cherish for generations.
The timing of this couldn't be more perfect. I am an amateur woodworker from the Philippines and I tried my first handcut dovetail a week ago using Lauan which is very accessible to me. It's very inspiring to see woodworkers I look up to, actually use the wood I can work with. ❤️❤️ More power to you!
Practice makes perfect. make it a goal to cut & fit a set of 3 dovetail joints every day, before you know it you can cut & fit a box with beautifully done dovetails in under an hour.. if you are disciplined enough to do a set a day for practice , you'd probably be as good as these guys in a month or two.
Go look at Rob Cosman (elsewhere on YT) for his excellent hand tool dovetail technique videos. His approach will get you really satisfying dovetails straight off the saw - if not first time, then within a very few tries. I tested Rob’s claim about this by attempting my first dovetails using a battered ‘Black & Decker WorkMate’ knockoff of a folding bench for my work holding, a work site panel saw for my cutting and some not great plywood for my material. The only other tools I used were a combination square, a 1:7 dovetail layout ‘square’, a Stanley knife for layout lines and 1/2” chisel. My cynical, disbelieving self thought “If your claims about this method are true, then it’ll work in crap circumstances as well as good.” The results left me gobsmacked. The joint went together first time, straight off the saw (i.e. no trimming to adjust), lined up, with the boards automatically square to each other, was self supporting and looked good (despite the habit of less-than-perfect plywood to delaminate when you’re sawing its edges). I’d been learning woodworking for perhaps a year, & I’m still a w/e woodworker not a full timer. After that, @briangustin3745 is right: just practice stuff. Make stuff that doesn’t have any other purpose except allowing you to practice your techniques.
Thanks. When I started following you, I was wanting to work on smaller boxes with hand tools. This is a little larger than the projects I am planning but the techniques are exactly what I expect to use. Gives me a sense of the tools. Now if I could just get that small bench for working on my apartment balcony....
Thank you - i just wanted to do a shadow box Christmas box (without making the frame itself, just the interior) and i found somebody that look exactly as i do :)
I love this man. U have some really nice tools. I like to use the hand saw now and again but I'm not skilful enough just yet. I really enjoy using hand planes. I recently bought some cheaper hand planes to get started with. They're well made for planes so cheap and the soles are true too. I need to work more on the edging of my blades though. Phillopeno Mahogany look very soft wood to work with. My issue is here where I live it's very hard to get hands on good timber like these species. I live in Ireland. It's not easy to get even some Ash anymore. We used ASH for well over 140 yrs to make the HURLEY's we played our national sport with but I don't think it so easy to get ash now. Isn't Ash a decent hardwood? I really like the look of ur workshop my brother. I started working with wood about 18 months ago. I had to fix some old doors at home nad it would kill me to spend that kind of money when I could easily fix them. Well that was my thinking anyways.. LOL Would it be ok to make one of these boxes out of cheaper PINE? I was asked to make one for a family member bcos she wants to keep some of her sons medals and things in it. He recently became a father himself and I think she wants to keep it for his son. I'm not good enough just yet to cut dovetails so I was thinking on 45 mitre corners with some nice splines in there? I know it's not the classy finish u have here but for me it will be fine. I use power tools as well bcos I don't have rebate planes or hand tools like that. I will be looking for the video u said u made one and are still using. My apologies for my usual longwinded comment. I say usual bcos when I begin talking about woodworking I cannot stop my friend. Take care and keep up the great content. I sub'd & liked and I will be looking for more of ur videos soon. Thanks for the inspiration man.. God go with u brother
About the plugs to fill the holes left by the grooves: I'm just a hobbyist, but I find it much easier to compensate by adjusting the pins to avoid holes all together than to make plugs with matching grain direction and all that. Perhaps a topic for a future video? In any case: many thanks and best greetings from Norway.
Very nice, as always. Now, please consider doing a tutorial on making a shadow box with side that are not perpendicular to the wall. Compound mitres on the corners in other words.
Nice job, as usual. Have you consider to rotate your board when you cut on the left side of the dovetail jig? This way, you will be again on the right side.
I realized an editing I left out that section as well as the final finish. I think I accidentally deleted the files when I moved them over. I just use simple sawtooth hangers. I put two of them on it.
Loved the video, need to make a few dozen of these for my Doctor Who collection. No snide comment this time, guess I need to get out and put my new presents to use... wife got me the Veritas marking gauge and one of the dove tail guides so no pressure right ???
Did I spot it (W)right? JKM dovetail jig. Is the accuracy for a showcase piece the reason you used it? I follow your channel for years and remember you stating any angle that looks right is fine. Thank you for sharing, I learnt a lot from you. Regards from an Austrian in Malaysia
Comment down below ;-).I recently got hold of a pile of very old wood dried inside a barn. I would appreciate tip on how to store and organise wood storage.

I'll add that finishing them make them pop and kinda hide their flaws too ;-)

That was a nice gift for your pastor. I'm sure he will cherish it.
Good video and if you become quite busy, well, you become quite
busy. Enjoy the festive season and I'm sure you'll receive MANY THANKS.

My son will be retiring from the Army in two years and this will make a nice gift.
As a new hobbyist, I have no clue how you more experienced guys are so so precise!
I learned the hard way to use the marking knife for everything when wanting precision.

Simple but beautiful, inspiring as always. Thank you.
I have been wanting to combine a shadow box and flag holder for my late fathers flag and military ribbons. Beautifully done!!
I did one of those a couple years ago.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo do you have a video on it for inspiration?
I want to make one of those too. Will be referencing both this video and the flag box video.
Here you go. th-cam.com/video/X7y27-_xgFY/w-d-xo.html

way more than I have the tools to achieve but very nice work. I'm going much simpler with the one I am going to build. Thank you.
I`ve never heard of a shadow box before this video. Thank you.

Nice work ,I need to make three of these to house my collection of cork screws .now I have an idea where to start.
This is a truly beautiful shadow box. Excellent video and narration was perfect and helped explain each step.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That looked like a lot of fun (and I do like dovetails!)
But I was never a fan of the Shadows. So how would I go about making a Vorlon box? 🤔
. Now there's a good reference.
Would you have to build a special atmosphere for the vorlon box to exist?
@@cheryldawkins7486 Naw, just use smokey glass.
Beautiful work and video!
Can you do a show on fixing dovetail gaps. Love the box. Very nice
Beautiful result! The wood looks real furry while you're working it, but it cleans up good!
The wood is just a shadow of its former self
Good build. I gotta get that Reed chamfer sled built.
Beautiful simplicity
nice - the mahogany you used looks a little like my white oak shadow box ...
Great build and a beautiful result
That plow plain is groovy
Nice, might make one for my Navy days memorabilia.
Beautiful work, James! It really looks great! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Beautiful work!!!!
love your enthusiasm.
I’ve been thinking about making a shadow box. Nicely done!
Making this (known colloquially as "shadow boxing") is a great way to improve your fighting skills.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos 😊 appreciated.
Your Pastor will treasure it for years.
Your boxing skills are impressive
Hi back James! And nice project there
Nicely done
Lovely! Nice work, as always.
Super neat build. Love it.
Thanks James!

Usually I do that. But in this case there was not enough space to fit in the two sized tables on this one.
Looks great.
It's always nice when a shadow box's shadow is a box.
Very nice, as always.
Now, please consider doing a tutorial on making a shadow box with side that are not perpendicular to the wall. Compound mitres on the corners in other words.
Great project
Great info on bidding groves
Again and again, so many thanks! ❤
Good Job James
nice box, do you have a link for the drawer bottom size stick? I could do with one of them.
I have a couple different videos making a couple styles of pinch rods. Here is one. th-cam.com/video/2yTf0yAT-QA/w-d-xo.html
Looks great
Liked the magnet trick, better than fumbling around with a magnet with my fat fingers
Great job!
Great video and project!
Nice job, as usual. Have you consider to rotate your board when you cut on the left side of the dovetail jig? This way, you will be again on the right side.
Yes. But I find it more useful to teach my left hand. It comes in handy a lot to be able to saw with both hands.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo That wouldn't work for me, I'm very intensely right handed. My wife, however, sews with either hand regularly.
I wish I could figure out making this myself. Thank you for the video. Do you sell them?
Hi, Amazing work, would you be able provide the list of the tools used to make this box ? Thank you.
Nice Work!
Nice project
How will it be hung on the wall, you've done all the joinery and fittings to "make" the box, but how do they hang it on the wall?
I realized an editing I left out that section as well as the final finish. I think I accidentally deleted the files when I moved them over. I just use simple sawtooth hangers. I put two of them on it.
Thanks for sharing that!
Don't the feathers get in the way by the way are you using handgun only or rifles too on your shooting board

I use it when the client is expecting perfect dovetails. I have a few videos showing it. Really is the best dovetail jig.
I had to go back and rewatch the cuts, I completely failed to notice any jig the first run through.
Great vid
What kind of wallmount did you use?
Just two saw tooth hangers.
Wood by Wright, have you ever done a shadow box using 'mirrored' glass. I know some glass companies specialize although not sure of the expense.
I have used it in a lot of other projects. but not a shadow box.
Nice project and...hiiii😜
To include ones mistake is a statement in and of itself with regard to the depth of the workman...shalom
Is Meranti the same as Phillipines mahogany? Nice video 😊
Yes that is the same thing.
Hiya fea Scotland.
Hi. That looks a bit mean, so I must say I enjoyed the video.
Do you take order ? What will be cost for 8x10 box ?
Sorry But I do not take commissions.
I like me a good box. 👍
Why didn't I think of the magnet trick before I glued them in backwards!
Its good
what do you need it for?
It is a gift for our pastor that just left the church filled it with memories.

Shhh, Nobody tell White Oak that James was using Mahogany. I guess what he does in the shadows is his business.
Hi!
Awsome
Happiness!!!
👍
I'm wondering why this is called a shadow box. Never heard of it before - nice project though.
You fill it with memories and things some stand out from the back and cast shadows.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo wow, that's far-fetched. At least for me as a non-native speaker it is....
