I visited Saba in April 2017 and hiked to the top of Mt. Scenery on my 60th birthday. It was always a goal for me after viewing the island from St Martin 15 years prior where my wife and I vacationed. Thanks for the video!
Great topic to help out the Newbies, and those of us who just WISH they could spend time sailing. Thanks! I love to learn about the real nuts & bolts of learning to sail & travel by sea.
I really appreciated you showing how to use PredictWind to a planner's best advantage. You answered several questions that I had previously on weather/route planning. Please keep the fantastic work and hope to cross wakes with you folks some day, someway.
Our cruising plans do include all of the Caribbean, thanks to the inspiration of you two. We are prepping our boat this year and will set out from Lake Erie either the fall of 2020 or 2021. We do hope to catch up with you two somewhere out there. Love these types of videos btw....the travel videos are good too, but these are way more helpful. Thanks for sharing.
@@DistantShoresTV It's because of my sailing on Lake Simcoe with SGA that I found you and in turn found SV Delos. Ha! You are the Originals. You should invite the Delos Crew to the Boat show in January.
@@DistantShoresTV Thank you much! I just watched your series on cruising the French canals, which we loved! On DS2 or DS3, would you be able to navigate the English canal system and might you have plans to do so? How about further exploration of the French canal system? Thanks!
Always enjoy your videos and the new boat is really beautiful. I am also from Ontario but live in the DR now and enjoying the Caribbean. I sailed out of Oakville all my life and then bought a big powerboat in Lauderdale which i took back to Lake Simcoe so i likely passed your place. Now I am back to sailing and your navigation tips and showing how well predict wind works is very valuable to me. Thanks and if you come this way let me know.
Can you explain why the St. Martin to St. Johns trip is upwind? @3:00 the screenshot shows 95 degrees true which is a beam reach. Maybe we need to adjust for apparent wind plus leeway so you need to point higher? I thought sailing up and down the Leeward Islands is typically on a beam reach due to the consistent easterly trade winds... Thanks!
Its a amazing how you take time to break down the the point of sail and how the boat perform up wind.Always want to know what Saba island looks like thanks for sharing great Quality video it looks like you spend great effort in putting this together for us.
After two and a half months cruising Sweden, Denmark and Germany we put our boat on a container ship in The Netherlands (Eemshaven) bound for Baltimore. We are very interested in crossing from the east coast to the Caribbean in the fall of next year, 2020. Any thoughts on the organized rallies that make that trip would be greatly appreciated. BTW we have your DVD collection but need to go back to watch to see if you covered one of the Caribbean rallies in your videos. Thanks, Chris.
Thanks for the video. I've been to the Windward Islands on a chartered Lagoon 450F. The whole trip was a blast! :-) Maybe I can do a tour around that area some time in the future, but no current plans. Planning to go sail in the Greek islands next year...
I always enjoy your videos. I live vicariously through watching them.Love to know if you're still enjoying the Integralmarine generator replacement? Any problems or concerns thus far?
Thanks William🙏🏻 yes the Integral has been working fine. This is not strictly related but if we had it to do over we would probably look at using Lithium batteries with the Integral rather than regular Oddyssey which were recommended at the time.
We started our full-time cruising in the 80's and used to listen on the shortwave radio for weather forecasts. In 1990 we got a HAM radio and could speak with a forecaster in person :-)
Do you guys still do new episodes of your tv show? I see on your website latest is season 10 and that is 5(?) years old at least already. Or only youtube now?
Hello Sheryl and Paul Thanks for the video. One question, how do you download forecasts while offshore? Satellite internet? Please advice. Best regards
Great lay down of route planning and Saba in particular. Question: I'm assuming you are using upgraded services from Predict Wind for route planning, is that correct? I believe I currently have the "middle" account which has some features more than basic, but not all. Thanks!
Very cool Video! Can you say what the costs for the predict wind tool are? Do I pay monthly or annually? Greetings from Michael, the sailing doctor. we meet on boot 2018 :-)
7 foot 2" is an acceptable raft for exploring the Caribbean Islands. It is a little deep for the Bahamas but even in Bahamas you can enjoy a cruise to many of the best areas. Fair Winds !!
If the wind patterns are on the computer program, can the gps warn the captain when it's time to change the sail's position or even do it automatically thru remote control?
haha yes that's coming soon to a boat near you I'm sure! But seriously we can prepare for the need to change sails - perhaps being ready to reef at night when we see ba weather coming.
I work with those weather models, and I would pay more attention to the predict wind models. Likely they may include Sea Surface Temperatures and are likely tuned for winds close to the surface. Generic Gribs are likely not tuned to such things and will be slightly less realistic. Also keep in mind any model beyond about 3 days is progressively unreliable.
id bet dollars to pesos you will have your most views ever and an explosion of new subs if you sail around and record little st james island. im sure you know what the title should be lol
This is my first exposure to Predict Wind. Looks super helpful!

Thanks for the knowledge. Three lights on the top of the towing boat means its towing. Excellent. Thanks again.
See www.collisionregs.com/MSN1781.pdf page 17 (rule 24) :-)
For actual learning of the lights get a good book, though - this is really dry.

Love the teaching you guys do. For me, I have three areas I'd love to sail to; the Caribbean/BVI, South Pacific, and the Maldives. Thanks or sharing!
Can't wait to see y'all in the South Pacific.

We've booked a one week charter in the BVI next January - first time sailing in the Caribbean, so really looking forward to it!

Hi love your video. What are the pros and cons of having a variable draft swing keel? Thankyou
Very relaxing.. Love the color of the water. So blue!
Thank you so very much,

Yay for Saba! My favorite island
How did people planned for passages before predicte wind, in 70's, 80's. I'm really fascinated by how technology has changed cruising.

I love your adventure, I found you when you were both with SV Delos , looking forward to seeing your episode from now on ⛵️🍷🍷⛵️🌈
Wuhii, cant wait to sail BVI’s in October
Always enjoy your videos. The technology is amazing. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So interesting… Did the barge that the small boat was towing show up on your radar?

Love your new boat 😍 Thank you for making good videos!
Would love to see Greenland and Iceland.
Hello Sheryl and Paul
Thanks for the video.
One question, how do you download forecasts while offshore? Satellite internet?

We use an IridiumGo satellite system for offshore communications that connects to PredictWind for weather forecasting and routing. Very reliable.
@@DistantShoresTV thank you so much

how the pirates down there
No encounters in 30 years of cruising, Jeff. A good site to learn about instances of piracy around the world is on noonsite.com. Hope this helps.
