  • The Pontiac 350 is an often forgotten about engine in the Pontiac muscle car lineup - luckily with more people looking for budget build options and just cars to cruise in the Pontiac 350 is becoming an option for people to swap into their GTO, Firebird, or Ventura at almost no cost.

    I don't know how it would perform, but I can easily say the Pontiac 350 is a rugged torquey engine. I had a 1971 Firebird with a 350 2 barrel and three on the floor. I was 19 when I bought this car in 1973. I beat the crap out of it and he just ran and ran. It ran very well.

    Great comparison! Since you’re running a computer simulation keep everything on the engine the same but on the cam, keep the duration and lift the same and change the LSA lobe separation angle to 108. This should improve the bottom end numbers without hurting top end.

    the P350 has a similar bore and stroke to the 346 cid (ie 350) LS1 engine, and no one worried about bore shrouding due to the cathedral port head design. But the LS has two other features that help with power. One is the valve angle--and the Pontiac has that as well. the other is crankcase volume--the LS was designed to be an aluminum block so it's really a Y block, or deep skirt design. That means when each piston goes to BDC, it's not compressing the mixture of air, oil vapor, and atomized fuel that got past the piston rings like a cast aluminum parachute (modern Ford shelby 5.8's have window'd main webs to let the air escape). since a Pontiac block's crankcase is wide enough for the 455's stroke, it too allows for more crankcase volume to reduce this resistance.
    now that we can't go to the junkyard and pick up a 455 for $100 because people are scared of a 5,500 rpm redline, the 350 is beginning to shine just like the 5.3 litre Ls engine now that the larger displacement LS engines are going up in price.

    I had a '71 Firebird Esprit with a Pontiac 350, 4 barrel carb, the car was surprisingly fast. I owned a 2000, Z28, LS1 Camaro at the same time and honestly the Firebird felt every bit as fast.

    350P's with late 60's high compression small valve heads are a nice build choice. Alternator mounting for later accessory setups will require some modding with the 60's heads, tho.

    The big valve heads with matching cylinder chamfer didn't seem to hurt the '69 350/325 all that much. However back in the day.everyone just grabbed a 400 Shortblock out of a typical 2 bbl full size Pontiac in the junkyard so I can't say I had a lot of experience with building the 350s.

    • @LSxHunter
      @LSxHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That chamfer was kind of a big deal to be honest. The range of 350 blocks offer some headaches. The 73 block that came in my 78 Firebird has the chamfer but has the later 6x-4 heads. I've ran into a few blocks without it over the years!

    So I currently have a Pontiac 350 in my 71’firebird esprit. I have a 400 block that I bought bored .10 over. Would you make the 350 the best it could then switch over the parts when other issues are done with the car or do right away? Are the gains really that notice able if I slightly improve the stock 350? Other issues include wiring, and some body rust. It's a fully stock car. Car has a TH350, electric fuel pump, upgraded water pump, edlbrock performa intake, stock fan. What would you do?

    • @LSxHunter
      @LSxHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I’d make the switch only if I were going to swap the cam too - what heads do you have on the 350?

  • @Beavis4pres

    I run a forged Pistons/rod 350P in a 67 FB. Ported RA3 #12 heads, Lunati 702 Voodoo cam, th350 w/2k stall, 3.73 8.5 rear.
    I got it to 14.0 in bad air, with what I suspect a good bit more available if I had the chance to tune it. Running aftermarket FI. Tough to get track time.
    It's enough to be stupid on the street. Sometimes I miss the days of a mild stock build with Summit 2800, but the speed bug bites.
    Btw, I think I gave away a few 350P's in the last few years. Nobody would pay for them. I needed the space.

    Im planning on building a 350ci for my 65 GTO. I have a 76 trans am block and my friend have different small valves heads he would sell me. 46, 4c-2, 4x, 31, 52, 68, 6h, 15, 47, 6x-8. I was going for 70's #15 small valves but 87cc is a little bigger then what im looking for high compression.
    Its gonna be a drag car mostly. But i like the take the small engine faster type.
    Any suggestions on other small valves heads that would be great?
    I also have a YF-389CI 4bbl 325hp (gross)in my 1966 starchief executive (4400 pnds) that i'm looking foward to rebuild for street. Its already my daily driver but i overave it a bit and now i have blowby. Its already 10.5:1 compression ratio and was thinking of putting à bigger cam like 2801 or little bigger but i need "Tork" What do you suggest my stock engine specs could benefit without spending too much. Im single father of 2 girls and budget is my middle name. Hahaha.
    I already know about porting and polish and little tricks but parts wise?
    Thanks. Nice video content

      With the 350s I’d say the biggest component is the heads and that summit cam - if you’re chasing lower end torque the stock intake outflows the majority of other OEM applications. Personally I’d hold out until I can find an RPM air gap intake at a swap meet. I’ve seen them for $40 needing to be painted.

      Im going ahead with 74 GTO 4c-2h (46) screw in studs heads on my 350. A friend sold me a Holley Single plane torquer with the snowflake. I know i should go with one of my 75' pontiac 4bbl intake cause a single plan is better for my next for drag racing. I don't know if i want to take the risk with open plane and street. I should have done it months ago but à had a situation home and work. No time.

    Bore x stroke from the factory is not 350 its truthfully 354 but Oooo we couldn't have anything outshine that chev 350 even tho stock Pontiac,Olds & buick motors would leave the Chev in the dust! Like the modern hemi stock is meaner then the LS lifter sucker motors.. Pontiac are torque monsters and if you want to scream 12,13,62 big valve heads BREATH - put a hair dryer on that with a steel crank 4 bolt mains and then lets see what happens! Truthfully anyone with COMMON sense knows no matter what make it is you have to do work to reinforce what you have for endurance,ls factory rods-yuck... Pontiac factory rod bolts are only good for one time,Olds motors need adjustable rockers because factory preload is ridiculous and stock like a 472 or 500 caddy is only good till 4200 so like anything you gotta change stuff .. and let us not forget Ram air motors and Olds w30 & w31, GS Buick and all true performance packaged engines were not the same has standard passenger engines per cam head selection etc .. anything can be built - Buick GS's running 11 & 10 Na motors hmmmm lets see how a hair dryer on those! Hmm Ya Big Chief is abd its not a LS motor - if it was matched equally we'd see some real nasty stuff not just the can find anywhere latest terd on a string and I want one 2 attitude,lol just saying
