Our three year old hopped on two headstones and we corrected her both times. The first was my grandpa’s. The Encourager. ☺️ He would not have minded. Also, please be kind in the comments. She was taught before we arrived but, in my parenting experience, little ones need to be reminded often. That is how they learn. We are not perfect parents or children over here. Overall, I believe my kids gained a lot of respect for many lives well-lived that day.

I understand that perfectly. When our little grandchildren come to visit they always want to go to the cemetery--only less than 1/2 block away. We always have to teach and reteach the little ones about the importance of the gravestones. I think these people would love to know someone is visiting them. I know my own mother wanted to be sure she was in a place where people would visit her grave--so we put the parents in a cemetery right across the little street from a church my dad often preached in, right where people often walk after church on Sunday. I love it.

I spent many days for 2 summers with my mom, her friends and a ton of kids in cemeteries in our small town. It was over 42 years ago, and genealogy was one of her hobbies. Physically going to locations and using their records were the only options in trying to track family history down. Many of the headstones were in disrepair or fading due to the materials used to make them. So my mom and her team, including us kids spent hours using paper and pencil to do rubbings of the headstones, so their information and in my heart ultimately the persons memories wouldn't be lost. I spent more time sitting on a grave those two summers than I did at a lake, or playing games, riding my bike, and I'm a better person for it. I would not trade a second.Times are different now, but I am pretty sure all the people in that cemetery were happy to have you and your beautiful family visit.

My mother in law and I are hugely into family history. She goes and cleans headstones with special cleaner in her free time. She's discovered long-forgotten relatives by doing this and helped many people find missing graves that they thought they'd never find again.
You're an awesome mom for doing this field trip. I read something one day that said something like, "one day someone will say the very last thing ever said about you and then you'll never be spoken about again." It really reignited the flame for my desire to do family history work. We cannot let people be forgotten. Their lives had great meaning. They did amazing things. They each had stories.
This is an awesome field trip.

"Is that something you would do?" I laughed to myself as you asked this question. If you ask my kids what they remember most about growing up they might say "going to cemeteries and museums." Especially because of my love for family history, this was a regular "field trip" for us--no matter what country we were in. I also spent years researching the lives of people buried in our oldest city cemetery and helped write scripts people could use for a yearly re-telling in a cemetery walk. It's a great way to make history come alive.

I love that you took your kids to a cemetery for a field trip! This is such a wonderful experience for your children. We're a now-retired military family who has lived all over the world and homeschooled all 3 of our children. While living in Hawai'i, we visited The Arizona Memorial and the USS Oklahoma Memorial, the final resting place of many sailors and marines from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor several times. We also visited the Punchbowl National cemetery. There's so much history recorded in all these places. Ellison Onizuka, the astronaut who dies in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion is buried there. During our time living in Germany, we visited the American Military Cemetery in Luxembourg where General Patton is buried among his men. While stationed in England, we lived in London. In addition to visiting the American Military Cemetery there, we walked past two local cemeteries everyday. My kids often asked to walk around. Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson's only daughter, Horatia, is buried in the cemetery across from our church in London. There's just so much to consider with such an activity - history, architecture of memorial markers, the nature surround a cemetery, as well as healthy discussion of the many aspects of death.

I’ve always been fascinated by cemeteries. My grandma is buried in one of the oldest bones, and every year the local historical society does a Civil War walking tour, as many of the fallen are buried there. The rest of my family are buried in a different, more modern cemetery.. It’s very quiet and peaceful there, and they actually paved walkways and added benches, and encourage walking there.

I'm a white girl with curly hair but obviously not like Belle's. I've been getting Deva Curl cuts for years in Boston and they are great!!! Yes, they cut it dry and you want to go in with how you would normally wear it down before you go in. No clips, pins or ponytails! Look up the Deva curl book. It's amazing how many different types of curls there are.
One thing is that if you do want to straighten it, DO NOT use a flat iron. The cut is not an even cut across the bottom. You need to use a large round brush and use a blow dryer.
Belle, your hair looks amazing! She did a nice job!!!

I think it would be great history lessons, yes I would have done it to. It's important to remember and respect those that are gone . There is a lot of History on monument and statue, tombstones. You should have took the acorn and planted it to see if they got a tree .

Cemeteries are filled with history, my husband does so much with genealogy and he is always pointing out old hidden cemeteries. We live in PA near Gettysburg and have visited so many. This is the first time I have heard of one actually providing tours, very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Cemeteries always remind me of the Anne of Green Gables series. Montgomery brought them to life for me and made me wonder about the stories of the folks remembered there even more!
Belle, your hair cut is so cute! I just had a curly cut last month and it took 4 hours! My hair was to my knees (I'm a curly redhead), and we took off a few inches and I have enjoyed it very much since trying the new hair products they recommended.

The right products would make a world of difference. Her hair should not look that dry . It should have a sheen /shine. With the right products her hair should hold the style , curls & shine/sheen for at least 4 days.
Ever try the old fashioned wash , set and sit under the dryer? You mentioned not wanting to damage your girls hair with heat & perms but under moisturized hair can be damaging. It noticeable on many videos that your kids hair is was to dry looking. Lush used to have a product with sea salt that was wonderful.
Sometimes with mixed hair it isn’t a one and done product but a series of products to achieve healthy, manageable & attractive hair.

The Forest Lawn Cemeteries in Southern California each have a historical theme. We as a home school group would rotate through the 3. They had actors who dressed up and shared about the historical theme. My favorite was Abraham Lincoln. They also had historical mosaic murals throughout the cemetery.

I honestly feel like you should honestly stick to one person that actually knows what their doing no shade. Belle's hair is beautiful but this lady did not shape even on both sides its going to be uneven and thin / thicker in other places for a while so braids or a flat iron would be frustrating . I have hair like hers so I know the struggle of thickness.

Totally something we do! I always browse cemeteries for baby names😆 Even as a teen, I would meet my friend at cemeteries and walk around and chat ( I was homeschooled too😆) There is one in our town from the 1800's where there's 4 little grave stones of quadruplets that were buried.~ Or my favorite, a 5 yr. old girl named Lena was buried. A year later, her parents named her sister Lena as well.... but she lies there also, as she died when she was 20 yrs old. 😥Grave stones tell a story. I love cemeteries! 😁

I grew up outside a small town that never reached 1,000 population while I was there. So in the cemetery it is easy to find names of relatives even if you had never met them.
My best friend lived next to the cemetery and I’d go visit her so we could spend time there. Sometimes we would pack a lunch and spend most of the day there exploring and creating the persons life based on the information on the headstone.
The best find was finding my paternal grandfather’s headstone who reportedly died before I was born except his headstone indicated he died when I was 8. Turned out that when Grandma caught him with another woman she booted him out and he was forbade from contacting anyone in the family. This was back in the day when being “forbade” to see someone actually included threats of bodily harm and weren’t something to ignore. He lived within 20 miles of us but never tried to see any of his grown children or grandchildren after that. They never did divorce but after he passed our grandmother started dating and every Thursday my one sister and I got to be their escorts to a drive in move (family night.
That’s quite a ramble from identifying with the interest in graveyards.
    Love Belle’S hair.
