President Theodore Roosevelt started the tradition in 1901. I am assuming the reason how/why the tradition started is because the President was a former Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and later served as an Army Officer.

1:00 "Dennis Michie" is actually pronounced like "Dennis Mike-ee."

Teddy Roosevelt started the tradition: Army first half, then Navy for the 2nd half, with the secretary of defense doing the opposite. This was to ensure at least one leader was on each side during the game.

...except there was no SecDef when TR was President. There was SecNav and a SecWar. SecDef is a post-WWII invention.

One other fact you could have mentioned was that Army and Navy didn’t play from 1894 to 1898 because during the 1893 game a general and admiral got into a fight and almost had a duel.
There were five other years the game wasn’t played, including twice during World War I.

Ike being the only president to play in the game, not surprising. There's only been three men to become President who either attended West Point or Annapolis. Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, And James Earl "Jimmy" Carter. Considering Grant was not only President before there was an Army-Navy Game but had been dead for five years when the first game was held, he's obviously ruled out. Which would only leave Ike, the West Point man, and Cater, the Naval Academy man. Don't know if Carter even played sports at AnnapolisAnd the war bond thing ain't a shocker either. Let's face it, just about anything that drew people was a chance to sell war bonds..
