I remember playing this in middle school band more than 10 years ago. I remember crying when our director read the composer notes before playing the song for us for the first time. Listening to this today and knowing the story behind it still brings tears to my eyes.
Fun fact: This one made dash nearly killed her. The Carpathia gave everything she could, to the point where her boilers were permanently damaged. she could never go her original top speed again
I play trombone currently and this piece is my favourite ever. I thought when I first got this piece it looks crazy to play. Then we started to get better at this song and i fell in love with it.
played this for my fall concert and the band director didn’t tell us what it was about before the concert. It was really cool to hear what it was when our speakers got up to talk about the piece.
funny thing: i was unaware that the carpathia was a ship at first. when we first got this piece, since i am a geography nerd, i was under the impression that it was referencing the carpathian mountains 😂
I found this piece awesome enough when I played a with a very small band, now that there’s more parts it’s one of the best things I’ve ever played in concert band. Now I’m making a marching band show with this in it, I think it will work well
i listened to the high school band play this last night as a 7th grader, and throughout the whole piece I most literally was like “😧”…I was SHOOK, especially because I fangirl over interesting pieces a LOT 😭😭😅
My band teacher told us to play this after he handed it to us the first day we played it and after he showed us this and said “ohhh that’s what it’s supposed to sound like” 😭😭
I played this for my winter concert this year. Honestly one of my favorite pieces that I have played. My band director brought in her fathers actual vintage ship bell so it would sound legit. The internal clapper fell off like twice and we were so worried she would be mad that we broke it. She wasn't mad, easy fix that brought the ten of us closer together than we were before.
Little tid bit: RMS Carpathia had 2 sister ships, similar to Titanic, RMS Saxonia and Ivernia and in July 1918 she was torpedoed and sunk by a German u-boat while serving as a troop transport. Her wreck lies in 500 feet of water and was rediscovered in 1999.
I'm in orchestra, and I learned that band was playing because they were irresponsible and left a lot of music on the floor of the music room. So I picked up the parts I found and learned how to play them (in the right key). Fast forward 3 months, and half the people in the band have agreed that I can play the music better than most of them.
Got to love that ship bell.
More cowbell to more shipbell
yeah we use a brake drum
We actually did the same thing.
What’s the instrument?

Played this at band camp. The trills are honestly so fun, and the countermelody is a banger (I play flute)
For the ones that do not know, Carpathia was the boat that saved around 700 titanic survivors. Congrats to Carpathia for this.
Fun fact: This one made dash nearly killed her. The Carpathia gave everything she could, to the point where her boilers were permanently damaged. she could never go her original top speed again
I remember having to learn this in just a few days, and then William Owens himself came to direct us. Hes amazing, came all the way from Texas.

The snare drum part is actually hard sometimes you have to keep everyone on the right tempo
I play trumpet, percussion (usually snare) and I also play trombone so this piece is really difficult because i have to learn 3 parts
I remembered the name of this piece and nothing else. I know for sure I played it in middle school ,but I think I only really remembered the trills
