    We all could relate to him, so we all enjoyed him. What a simple, but effectual equation. Brilliant.

    In my final year at primary school, my class had to do a skit. Our teacher suggested doing some Fred Dagg songs. (This was 1974, I think) So, the whole class dressed up with gumboots and black singlets and did the gumboot song and the "Three on a scooter" Christmas song. It was so much fun as a kid.

      I was doing the gumboot song still at school in 2012 !

    Fred was the half of it, the other NZ half representing the Maori was Billy Tea James … both Iconic in their own right. Billy was just comedy whereas John went on to be a Legend across the whole of Australasia …

    He was brilliant but he went to Australia because in New Zealand he was stereotyped and he wanted to evolve in which he did in Australia and his comedy got a lot better

    • @racketman2u
      @racketman2u ปีที่แล้ว

      to a small minority maybe, but he was a national icon in his kiwi Fred Dagg persona, and never reached those heights in Australia.

      @@racketman2u maybe but as I say he was stereotyped and it was limiting you see the comedy you did when he went to Australia that was really sophisticated brilliance

    I've been away from NZ for almost 30 years and last visited more than 10 years ago - so does the younger generation of an increasingly multicultural Kiwiland relate Fred Dag or his humour most appreciated by those of us who enjoyed it the first time round.

    "Fuck pavlova and Crowded House, we lost John Clarke."
    Don't think of it as 'losing', call it 'charitable giving to appreciative, very caring, foster parents'.

    John Clark was the Comedian that Roman Atkinson wasn’t. He opened his mouth and then make you laugh, looked a little rough, Atkinson didn’t have to speak. Both great on TV and England and New Zealand had a lot of laughs from their combined performance, in NZ anyway. There is sadly no mention of the Other top NZ comedian Billy Tea … just as funny in his own. Different way and I’d say just as talented . More film credits I believe too.
