Founded in 1991 by Jane’s addiction frontman perry farrell started the traveling tour known as lollapalooza that would become one of the most memorable music festivals of the 90’s. It would run until 1997 after which it took a 6 year hiatus. The 1994 incarnation of the festival was supposed to be featuring so called Indie bands. Keep in mind I’m using the promoters words not mine. The 1994 version of the festival was supposed to see Nirvana headline, but by the summer of 1994 Kurt Cobain was dead, so their plans changed. The so called indie year would be moved to the following year to 1995 with Sonic Youth headlining with Hole, Pavement, Beck, Cypress hill, Bikini Kill. and Sinead O’Connor and many others on the bill. It seemed like the promoters of the festival by 1994 were receiving a lot of backlash from fans and critics. Stuart Ross who served as the festival’s tour director during the 90’s recalled to the Washington Post
In ’94, the press was starting to take shots at us. They said, “Smashing Pumpkins and Beastie Boys are platinum-selling artists, and Lollapalooza was never a show for platinum artists.” In ’95, the same press came back and said, Lollapalooza’s a rip-off, there’s no headliners.
When the 1995 incarnation of the festival happened it had been about a year since Courtney Love’s husband had passed away. Of all the artists on the bill that year, Courtney Love and her band Hole seemed to attract the most media attention. From the beginning of the tour in George, Washington there was drama between the bands on the bill.The drama was only further exasperated by the internet which was still in its infancy. it created a new way for fans to get even closer to the artists and get a better understanding of what happened behind the scenes. For the 1995 incarnation of Lolapolaozza Spin Magazine teamed up with some of the artists on the bill who wrote tour diaries that would be published online. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth would publish an entry that called out Courtney Love writing
“everyone is disgusted and grossed out. Perry [Ferrell, Lollapalooza figurehead] is bummed. Everyone’s bummed.” He would go on to reveal that Courtney Love during a stopover in Vancouver and i quote “yell[ed] at the audience something about how she’s wearing a cast on her arm cuz she ‘punched some expletive in the face.’” He would go on to reveal that Courtney Love and i quote “suckerpunched” Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna, and she in turn filed criminal charges against Love. Four days later it had turned out that Love had read Thurston Moore’s posts.” Suddenly Thurston had a change of heart. & from his follow up online posts it appeared him and Courtney Love were friends again.
Courtney Love for her part also published some online posts about her experience on the tour. In one rant she would call out Kathleen Hanna saying and i quote “Kathleen Hanna was my husband’s worst enemy in the world, someone who would stop at nothing to aggravate us.” She would go on to refer to Hanna as and i quote“Ratface.’ It’s important to note that Hanna was responsible for coming up with the name Smells Like Teen Spirit which eventually became nirvana’s most popular song. So what went down between Courtney Love and Kathleen Hanna. Well you’ll get a different story depending on who you ask and what you read.
Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson would recall to the Washington Post “We had bulk candy backstage. I go, “Courtney, there’s [Bikini Kill frontwoman] Kathleen Hanna. You should offer her some candy.” She grabbed the candy and just threw it at her. Everybody was like, “Oh my God, she punched her in the face,” but from what I saw, she threw the candy, and kind of slapped her in the direction of her face. I don’t know if she actually hit her, or what. It doesn’t matter, it was not cool. . . . The whole tour started on that note.
Hole bassist Melissa Auf (off) der (der) Maur (Mao-Er): Courtney did a fake cat hiss, like a joke. Like, “We’re at war” kind of a thing , ” . . . making a weird joke in passing. Next thing you know, there’s this explosion of arguing. Maybe a shove, I can’t remember.

I went to a show after Courtney Love left that Marilyn Manson Tour. I remember when Monster Magnet’s singer mentioned Courtney left the Tour because of all the negativity. Then the singer said, “Do I look like a negative person to you?”…and the crowd went wild!!!

The story is, Kathleen wrote it (Kurt smells like Teen Spirit) on a bedroom wall when she was hanging out with a group of people that included Kurt. It was a joke pointed at him because the girl he was in love with, Bikini Kill member Tobi Vail, used Teen Spirit deodorant, implying that he was marked by her scent. Supposedly Kurt didn't know that was a deodorant and just thought it sounded cool. Peace.

@Richard B it wasn't a cat fight when a psycho ( Courtney) walks up to you when you are watching a band, and blindside's you with a sucker punch. That's what happened. One could say most in the music and entertainment industry have arrested development. Or actually ANYONE that has an identity with their career, and whatever age that career began. People are not linear once reaching adulthood and it's many times their ego and own achievement/ success keeps them stuck in time with the same lenses on. Majority of adults out there are basically just children who no longer live with their parents.

Courtney hated Kathleen because kurt was close to her, and admired her. Everything that she says kurt felt for Kathleen was a lie, and just another example of courtney trying to use Kurt's name to give her own thoughts and feelings validation and credibility. I can't stand anything about her. Thurston Moore was always easily manipulated by courtney, as was Eric, so I'm not surprised (but am still disgusted) that they stood up for her.
I think courtney love said it best when she wrote "oh look at my face, my name is might have been, my name is never was, my name's forgotten". It's all extremely accurate, except the very last line, which is only inaccurate because she married Kurt Cobain.

I do think jealousy and envy played some part in Love's hostility towards Hanna. It's pretty well documented that Love was always very insecure and unhappy about her looks. She wrote songs about not being pretty etc. on Hole records. She got a nose job during the early days of Hole, using money Love saved by working in strip clubs. And of course later she kept on getting various surgeries and procedures. I think she was also heavier in her younger days, and lost weight, but still had this "fat and ugly" insecurity complex. And if you go back to when she acted in "Sid and Nancy", she wasn't very attractive, physically - not being nasty here, just trying to view her face impartially, but according to criteria like facial balance, features and general resting expression, Love was (pre-medical procedures) much less attractive than Hanna, who does have an appealing expression and has good facial harmony, and attractive features. A lot of insecure people hate others who naturally have what they didn't/don't.
There were probably other things about Hanna which Love envied and felt she couldn't compete with.
Since Love felt she didn't have looks, I think she tried to compete and emphasize her sexuality and outrageous antics and ability to attract others, instead. She probably honed those skills when she worked as a stripper. Apparently, despite the face that she was dissatisfied with, Love had admirers. Reportedly when Love was in Asia, a wealthy male client from the Philippines wanted Love to go back with him, and gave her money for new clothes. She used it to pay airfare back to the U.S.
Love also seemed to have success charming celebrities, when she was unknown - people like musician Julian Cope, director Alex Cox, and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon (persuaded by Love to produce Hole's first studio album).
Actually, I think Love would probably have become famous even if she'd never gotten married to Cobain. Love really, really seemed to want to be a star. She devoted herself to it. She was heavily involved in the rock scene, and in the media (was in the Cox film and something by Andy Warhol, and a music video for the Ramones). She caught the attention of many, and various celebrities and artists were willing to help her. Apparently she even talked her way into a brief gig as a singer for Faith No More (in their ealy days).
Love knew how to identify ("rip off" according to some) cool trends like the "Kinderwhore look" - the babydoll and little girl outfits with a grunge/ heroin chic edge like messy bleached hair, smeared lipstick and ripped dresses or stockings. Bit like Madonna in that way. Love worked her contacts and network. And her behavior got headlines and kept her constantly talked about.

Oh my god! I went to 1995’s Lollapalooza. It was so cool and I remember waiting for Hole to come on and heard a song I knew, but it was clearly the original version. That song was Joy Division’s “Dead Souls” (I had only known the NIN version as a 12 year old) and that moment helped turn me into a huge JD fan.
The only upsetting thing was my dad made us leave before Sonic Youth, my favorite band at the time. Many years later I got to see them at P4K in Chicago doing Daydream Nation.
Anyway, Lollapalooza changed my life. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I have absolutely no sympathy for courtney love! I went to a show on her first tour after kurt death. She had asked if anyone had any drugs and someone gave her something and she had him kicked out. Then she proceeded to go on rants tell everyone that we were the reason why kurt was dead and was spitting on us. I've been to a lot of shows as a patron, musician and promoter and never seen such a horrible performance. I've seen Jr high kids act more professional on stage then her.

In any conflict between Courtney Love and Kathleen Hanna…I’m definitely on Team Hanna - even if Hanna literally shit in Love’s corn flakes, I’m sure it would be justified.
I can’t figure out why Courtney would have disliked someone beautiful, smart and talented like Kathleen. The whole video shows sensitive, thoughtful musicians like Pavement and Sonic Youth having to deal with this whirlwind of a human being. Doesn't sound as good as Courtney Love (even though it worked for George - but then people would have asked "is she George's daughter" etc.) But apparently she chose it as a stage name, when she was a stripper. And it sounds ironic but strangely it isn't. She was quite popular and when she was in Asia, some wealthy guy was keen on her and wanted to take her back with him to the Philippines. He even gave her money - which she used to buy a plane ticket back to the U.S.! So very Courtney Love really.
And for some reason, a lot of musicians and celebs fell for Love - Eric Erlandson, Billy Corgan, Kurt Cobain of course, Edward Norton, and a bunch of others. Even before she got famous, she somehow managed to get stars and celebs to take her under their wing or help her - Julian Cope, director Alex Cox, Andy Warhol, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and even Faith No More (she talked her way into giving her a spot as lead singer, briefly, in the early 80s). I don't find her behavior tolerable but she must have some charisma of sorts or something.
I had a friend that worked on that tour and he said by all accounts she did punch her but the other bands wanted to downplay it desperately.
I saw this lollapalooza in Pittsburgh. Someone threw a shotgun shell onstage during holes set. Courtney left the stage and Sonic youth picked up the slack. Thats a win / win
Courtney Love has a history of attacking other women she's jealous of or perceives as being competition in some way. Given Kathleen's history of being friends with Cobain pre-Courtney, it's no surprise that she treated her this way. Kathleen Hanna has integrity. Ask Kat Bjelland and Mary Lou Lord about Courtney Love's craziness. Courtney should have done some jail time for this and had her jets cooled a bit.

She has stated, and I agree... someone within her management should have pushed a bit harder towards bereavement counseling. She was out of control , In the depths of grief and suffering... and all of this was televised, publisised, and on display.

Allison Wolf from Bratmobile shares a HILARIOUS story on her podcast interview with Patty Schemel- about when Hole toured thru DC in ‘94 & Allison met with & hatched a plan with Patty to do some thrift shopping the next day.
Allison pulls up to the hotel- Patty comes down to meet her and looks stressed. She TRIED to leave unnoticed, but Courtney saw her leaving & asked “what’s up? Where to do fast?”

I always thought Love's strong suit was lyrics, which she excelled at.
Regardless of my personal views regarding first-world feminism, I’d rather listen to any riot grrl band than listen to Courtney Love any day of the week. Funny Courtney is saying Bikini Kill was the biggest hoax in rock history when Hole is by far one of the biggest jokes in music. Kristen was the only good musician in that band and Courtney rode the coattails of Kurt.
Courtney was likely threatened by Hanna's natural beauty, talent, integrity, status, and long-standing friendship with Kurt. Hanna's song Ha Ha Ha is deliciously on point, while "Rock Star" is just plain lame.

The story I’d always read was that Kathleen made some remark about Frances being addicted to heroin, I believe that the quote was something like “Where’s the baby? At home with an IV in her arm?” So Courtney decked her. I’m not sure of the validity of the story though, I have no trouble accepting the idea that Courtney hit her for no reason or out of some artistic jealousy. Frankly, that whole scene was full of fundamentally flawed personalities. Riot grrl philosophy always struck me as being so petty and small about things, and Courtney is just a constant circus unto herself. There are no good people to cheer for in that situation.

The song "Rockstar" about Kathleen & Olympia that you mention in the end isn't actually called Rockstar. It was titled that as the last track on Live Through This because Rockstar was originally meant to be the closer but Kurt passed right before LTT was released and the actual song Rockstar had the lyric "how would you like to be in nirvana/I think I'd rather die" so they pulled the song and replaced it with the song "Olympia" which is the one ur referring to ("when I went to school/in olympia/everyone's the same") but it was too late to change the artwork.
I was about to say this. IMO "Olympia" should've been shipped off to b-side land, not slapped onto the end of an otherwise near perfect record.

I was at the Lollapalooza show at the Gorge in '95. Hole was one of the bands I was looking forward to seeing and I remember Love seem cranky and a little out of control. She flashed the audience at one point. She also spotted an audience member with a picture of her daughter, Francis, on their shirt. She asked to see the shirt then refused to give it back and chewed the person out for making it (though, truthfully, that would be a little weird for anyone to deal with). After 30-years, those are the only two things which still stand out about the festival. It was really just a good time with some great friends.
