    0th Level Spells- Cantrips for Battlefield Control in 5E- D&D Discussions
    Surprising quite a bit of battlefield manipulation can be achieved through the use of a cantrip in 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. Some are very good at EOA, forced movement, or debuffing. What makes cantrip magic so good is one it scales with character level and two they never run out. A good controller should consider carefully the cantrips they have in their arsenal. Nearly all casters have access to control cantrips some have little like the bard and druid. The warlock has few. Than there is the sorcerer and wizard with a ton. The cleric is the only full spell caster with none.

    I've Minor Illusioned a barrel over the party's halfling rogue, that he can see through, since he knows it's an illusion. Wait till someone passes by... the barrel stabs them, with advantage, with sneak attack...

      Or create sounds behind the enemy - maybe of footsteps or the sound of an unsheathing blade - that makes them paranoid that someone is sneaking up on them. Works best if there is darkness or some blind corners behind them, so they can never be sure there isn't someone sneaking around.

      Even better, this could grant advantage if one of your party is actually sneaking around making those noises. They'll never know what's real until they waste actions on saves. I'd rule situational, either advantage on stealth roles or attack roles.

    Also surprised _Minor Illusion_ got left out. A lot of people misuse it (because they create moving images, which they shouldn't be able to do), but even stationary images and sounds give you battlefield control, and the versatile nature of the cantrip allow you to create lots of different effects.
    Also, battlefield control is augmented by having a high speed. I have a custom creature which is an intelligent, animated bun made of dough. It has 1 hp, but moves very quickly, and taunts enemies with _Vicious Mockery_ (to the effect that no one can catch it, like the gingerbread man). It's pretty hard to just eat the psychic damage when this thing is rolling circles around you. More than one such creature can be a real terror.
    An arcane trickster with _Shocking Grasp_ can also be a holy terror. Start out of range, use a bonus dash action, and shocking grasp your opponent, taking away the reaction opportunity attack. Move out of melee range. Rinse, repeat.

      Tome Warlock cantrip master of control. Level 4 Warlock with Tome Pact and Magic Initiate. Chill Touch, Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand, Infestation, Thorn Whip, Vicious Mockery, Gust, Ray of Frost, and Shocking Grasp. Change any of them around as you see fit. Optional dip 2 levels into Moon Druid for CR 1 wild shape to give you an HP shield to run away with and pick up Frostbite and Mold Earth, or finish out after level 4 with Sorcerer and still pick up Frostbite and Mold Earth. Hey I know i'm late to the party on this one but Booming Blade is absolutely amazing with the War Caster feat.
    Being able to "cast" booming blade as an opportunity attack means that the target is ALREADY in the process of willfully moving away from you giving you that 1d8 free extra damage.

    Chill Touch is one that is very underrated in my opinion. It prevents any healing by the affected creature and if it's against an undead that undead has disadvantage on it's next attack against you. It also scales up with levels on the amount of damage it does

      Don't forget Light, which has use both inside and outside combat. No one wants to be fighting enemies you can't see.
      That being said, the Cantrip description doesn't say the caster needs to be holding onto the item or be within a certain range for it to stay working. It's a set and forget spell that lasts an hour. I can imagine the caster putting it on a stone, then throwing it into a group of enemies while the area is otherwise in total darkness. Suddenly, YOUR allies are the ones with concealment, while the enemy is standing around a beacon in the dark. Great if your allies do their best work in the shadows.

    Eldritch Blast (120ft). Eldritch Spear (upgrades to 300ft). Spell Sniper feat (doubles range of spells with attack rolls). And Distant Spell (Sorceror 3rd lvl; 1 sorcery point doubles range of spell). That's a 1200ft range spell that can push 10ft per blast! This can all be acquired at lvl 6 (5 for variant human). Can you even see 1200ft in normal situations?

    • @djaevlenselv
      @djaevlenselv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That'll depend on if your DM allows it, I think. Does 5e even have any rules on stacking the same effect? In 3e we were explicitly told that multiplications stacked, but every multiplier was to the base effect, so 2 doublings = 1 tripling; does 5e have any similar clarification? If not, the DM could just rule that the effects overlap; 1 doubling from 2 sources = 1 doubling.
      So, a very permissive DM might let you get away with 1200 feet, but a more conservative one might go by 3e logic and limit you to 900, while a harsh one would keep you at 600. Still very good, but less outrageously powerful.

      @@luska5522 Incorrect. The new ones in Xanathar's limit to once per turn, but repelling blast from the Players Handbook does not have the same limitation. It simply states that each time you hit, it can push the enemy 10' away. If you hit with all 4, it moves 10' for each. If you somehow cast the spell a second time, such as Ravnica's Illusionist's Bracers, you can move them up to 80' away. Repelling Blast is the only one though, the rest are one per turn.

    Wow. Ignition completely off the table as a battlefield effect.
    Checking with history, the number of times fire was used to direct, repel, or stop troop movements is enormous. Firebolt is not only a great way to attack targets, but it can set grass, wood, cloth, or any number of combustible materials alight. All it needs is that these things not be worn or carried. Like the grass people are standing in. Or the pavise a crossbowman or archer is hiding behind. Or the wooden barricades archers are firing from behind or through. Or the parapet they're walking on. Or the tents their reinforcements are in....it goes on and on.
    Lowly Prestidigitation can be used to ignite fires. Or extinguish campfires, blinding opponents. Control Flames can make existing fires move in ways nature never intended, starting new blazes like a twisting fire snake as a single cooking fire arches to alight tents, weapon racks, etc.
    I played a (Red) Draconic Sorcerer, so you can expect that I lit banners, controlled torches, ignited the grass or forests around targets, and generally created mayhem.
    There's a reason fire has been the oldest and still most commonly used element in combat.

      I don't think control flames works the way you think it does. True, the flame snake is a cool effect, but unless those idiots put their tents 5 ft away from the fire, you couldn't ignite their tents with control flames. Now firebolt or create bonfire totally could, but that's a separate action.

    Jeremy Crawford had stated that works like fear, turn undead etc the cause you to run is not considered forced movement so it would triggered booming blade and OA as normal.

      Chikiko Saotome This is why dissonant whispers is so op. 3d6 psychic damage on a failed wis save and give any melee an opportunity attack on the creature. Half damage on a save.

    • @sakisaotome6753
      @sakisaotome6753 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just had to tweet jeremy crawford, because i just thought what happens you have someone with war caster feat hit a target with booming blade. then someone casts fear/dissonant whisper/etc. so the target runs away, triggering the booming blade effect. it also triggers an OA from the caster. because they have the war caster feat they can cast a spell as an OA. So they cast ... Booming Blade!? what happens now? they MUST run away but doing so would trigger yet another booming blade effect. If the caster is 5th level using a rapier, it will take 2d8 damage from the initial attack, when it runs away it will take another 2d8. if it gets hit by the OA it will take another 2d8 from the attack and the 2nd runaway damage is yet another 2d8. if this is all possible that means the target is taking 8d8 damage from booming blades and if the fear was started by dissonant whispers another 3d6. 8d8+3d6. Just wow. I hope i was able to word it so that he understands what i was trying to ask since post is obviously much larger than a tweet can be. but once he responds i'll post his reply.

    • @sakisaotome6753
      @sakisaotome6753 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally got a some rules clarity on this. (specifically the OP scenario i postulated below) Booming blade can't be made to work this way. So according to Jeremy crawford, Dissonant whispers spell forces the target to run away as a reaction, because of this they will provoke attacks of opportunity. However, because the spell forces the target to run despite, it can not be considering willing movement even though it is not considered a forced movement. As such, a fear type spell will not trigger the booming effect. So if you had war caster you could hit them with booming blade as an OA but the movement damage wont trigger unless they wililngly choose to move. It still makes dissonant whispers and other such fear spells pretty strong, especially if you have a paladin or someone with the war caster feat who can use a spell like booming blade as an oa. (or a paladin with booming blade and warcaster)

    My favorite control combo is easiest with the Druid. Thorn Whip, Create Bonfire, Sentinel, and War Caster. See, bonfire does damage when you first cast it, AND the first time any given target enters it during the round, AND when someone ends their turn in it. So, cast Bonfire under your target, it does damage. They try to step away, and you thorn whip them back into it with your spell of opportunity from War Caster. Bonfire does its damage again. Sentinel then sets their speed to zero, so they have no choice but to end their turn in the Bonfire, so it does its damage again. 3 Bonfire hits and a Thorn Whip hit, all in one round, so 6d8+2d6 by the time you can do it at 8th level (since you need 2 feats), 9d8+3d6 at 11-16th, and 12d8+4d6 at 17-20th.
    Smart enemies won't try to get out of the bonfire twice, but that means you have control of their movement.

    • @ericpeterson8732
      @ericpeterson8732 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see a problem with your combo. Smart enemies will move around you while staying in your threat range. Or move around and then leave. Thorn whip would pull them back, but not back to the bonfire square. It still works situationally but it's a big resource commitment for a situational combo. But I bet it feels great when it works. How are you handling melee as a druid? D8 and hide armor only go so far.

    • @ericpeterson8732
      @ericpeterson8732 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I don't think they would take bonfire damage again when they attempted to move since your reaction kicks in when they attempt to leave and sentinel means if you hit them, they don't move. Still, they would take the damage twice: once when you cast and at the end if their turn. And as Meatloaf sang, "don't be sad, 'cause 2 out of 3 ain't bad." 😁

    Also booming blade is good for a Gish character because as you level up the initial damage is also increased up to 4d8 plus your weapon damage. So you deal extra damage extra damage on your Tack and your movement prevention. As a fighter sorcerer I use this to compensate for not having multiattack or if there are two enemies close enough I'll use green flame blade to do the same thing but if there was only one enemy in range I will use booming blade to prevent them from reaching my teammates

The combo I’m planning goes something like this: prestidigitation to light a small campfire 5 feet in front me > control flames to expand the fire in a roaring 5x5 cube of flame > lightning lure (possibly twinspelled) to draw in the unfortunate > poison spray to add insult to injury.
    Will take a few turns to set up but I think the results will be nice.

    Here's an idea I had for Druicraft. The party sneaks up on a group of foes, and is going to attack. Before they do, the Druid creates and weaves plants around the feet of one of the guys just standing around. Preferably the most armored one, since his leg protection and boots might prevent him feeling it happen. It'll take a while, but I can see Druidcraft eventually creating a snare of plant matter, _literally_ rooting the guy in place. So when the fight starts, this guy tries to jump into action, only to waste his turn as he figures out that he's stuck. Then he has to use another turn freeing himself, assuming he makes his Strength check (which he might not, even if he is a burly guy).
    While he's stuck, that's him basically out of the fight for a round or two, while the party thins the rest of the enemy forces.
    You could also use this trick on other things, like inanimate objects. That same Druid, once he snares the enemy tank, could take a minute to weaves vines and roots around the enemy's weapons or equipment, if they happen to have them lying around. Minor Illusion is a great control spell. It just takes a little imagination. You may not be able to literally turn your staff into a flaming greatsword. But you can make it appear as such. Or make a chasm appear on the battlefield. Or make a familiar look massive.

    • @fftere
      @fftere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Illegal. You can't place Minor Illusion in moving targets. Well, you can, but that would be stupid. The cantrip is static, it freezes where you put it. The spell you're looking for is Silent Image, which you can animate as an action or Disguise Self to change your overall appearance and the stuff you carry or wield. Or play as a warlock and take the Misty Visions + Mask of Many Faces invocations and have fun

    Create Bonfire is good for closing off a move route.
    Infestation can force an opponent to move, possibly triggering someone else's booming blade.
    Friends can make an enemy leave the battlefield for a few rounds if you pull it off before combat starts.
    True Strike(gag) is good for a rogue who has literally no other options for sneak attack damage.
    The elemental cantrips have their uses. I built a Warlock who uses Shape Water to create frozen spaces of terrain to move over water. She needs Boots of the Winterlands to pull it off fully though.

    divine origin sorcerer who can only use cantrips. 24 on the list for sorcerers and they get 4 at the start. They can then choose a new one each level. They still receive all spell slots and levels for metamagic and other class benefits. Just that their divine origin included a trickster god who thought it was funny to only allow them to use cantrips. I believe they could still be quite beneficial to a group if used creatively.

      That reminded me of the time that Dave from KOTDT played a wizard for the first time. It was Hackmaster, not D&D, but he made a gnome titan wizard (gnome titans were melee focused gnomes) whose Int was so low he couldn't cast 1st level spells. So all he had were cantrips. And Hackmaster had a bunch of weird enchantment cantrips like shift blame (where for the duration, everyone thinks someone else did whatever you did) or knowing smile (where you can make someone do a knowing smile to act like they know you) Anyway, Dave combined all these cantrips to get free drinks and then slip out before they could get caught. Hackmaster is more combat based than D&D. (It's a modification of the old 2nd edition rules) and it has more of a munchkin feel to it. D&D is hesitant to allow these minor enchantment cantrips because of the abuse players would get into. That's why friends is the only enchantment cantrip and it automatically ticks the subject off so you can't spam it.

      Moderate damage and -10' to move is busted in a *lot* of situations?
      Ray of Frost could keep you planted (reduce speed to 0) if you have already reduced the enemies speed with a battlefield control spell. But most battlefield control spells that reduce move down to 10 or 5 feet also obscure vision in some way.
      So you'd have to have the enemy succumb to one or two spells already cast in order to lock them down; and you'd have to have a build that can see through the visual obscurement in order to be able to take full advantage. So we are talking multiple spells and specialized build in order to take advantage of a cantrip.
      Seems far from broken. What were you thinking of?

This helped with lighting to fight and they would jump through one to be faced with another. After the bonfires they faced 4 readied adventurers. We would of been swarmed otherwise and then insult to injury our ranger used his only level 2 spell for spiked growth behind and underneath them. I know it wasnt only a cantrip battle but the bonfires started off strong as a crowd control. Jump through fires and swords or run through a spikey death.
