We made a online auction program that automatically calculates all the different buyers premiums and also all the fees on each site we want to sell those items on. We know the maximum we are willing to bid on any item or lots, with profits. It's easy to enter lot # of various auctions and items, to keep track of everything. Many buyers in the heat of an auction online or at local brick and mortar weekly auctions are caught up in the moment and don't stop and think about buyers premium and if selling online those fees too. Had 3 brick and mortar auction houses and heard it over and over from customers saying I shouldn't have bid that much, they didn't consider all the auction and online fees. Bid smart everyone :)
It’s the Handling Fee and Shipping that can get out of hand if you buy at an online auction. I bought a 6” metal candy mold for $6.00 and the UPS store charged me $30 to pack and ship! Also, some auction companies are not honest. I bought a quilt top online that they said was from the late 1800’s and sewn by hand, but only about 4 postage stamp size squares were sewn by hand and the rest was sewn by machine. Of course, the pics they showed were the hand sewn ones. Buyer Beware!
Another in-person benefit with many auction houses is you can get usually 3-5% off the buyer's premium if you pay with cash. (Around here it usually drops from 15% to 10%.) We have an online local place that does this as well. They hold your credit card info, but don't charge you until you show up to pick up. Cash is king.
thank you so much, Kat, for this video... I have been using HIBID for months, but never noticed the tab in the upper left showing items I'm watching and items that I'm currently bidding on... so helpful to see without actually calling up the whole auction...
Thank-you for all the great info. I only had 1 hi-bid auction near me (150 miles) but one just opened 20 min from me so I'm going Sunday to view it all in person and bidding is on Monday, pickup on Tuesday. I'm excited to see if I get anything good. Dalton looks likes he's having fun swimming!!!
Kat, because of your videos I tried out Hibid this week for the first time and found out I actually have an auction house in my town! Online only to boot, which is great. I just picked up my first items that I won; 4 backpacks, a car window and a badminton set for $20! Next time I won't get the backpacks but I'll try selling them on Facebook. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Sometimes "no pictures" on a lot is a great thing! I bid on a lot with no photos. It just said "gravy boat and misc.". I won it for $2 and the gravy boat sold for $167 within a week! I have the other china platters that came with it listed for $60 & $70! SCORE!
I recently drove an hour and a half to preview an online auction. It was in Red Wing Minnesota and the perk was it was a lovely day and for 45 minutes I drove right along the Mississippi River on the Minnesota side and on the way home I stopped at a wonderful Bar and Grill called Bucknuckles, in Cream, on Wisconsin Hwy 88, that has amazing buffalo and elk burgers and decorates with antiques and antique advertising!!!! I swear you could stop there 20 times and not see everything. They hang pitch forks to display their wine glasses, they have a table made from welded together wrenches. They lower Harley Davidson side saddle bags filled with condiments from the ceiling when your food order is delivered !!! Plus, I was able to review some amazing things, and 3 days later I bid on the auction. The only downside was that my pick up day was stormy and rainy so it was not the most pleasant drive. Bit still, the stuff I bought was awesome and I will make an excellent profit !!! This was a hoarder/collector house...no garbage, but packed from floor to ceiling with wonderful antiques. There will be 8 more auctions from this estate and I can hardly wait !!!
again thank you have been out bid for months now on goodwill,,, won the other day .925 scrap/religious/wearable lot,, yeah going through the stuff some 10,,14k gold, fine Italian pendants,, so far I have searched and bagged $400 pd $100 still going through found a vintage 70s NIKE .925 ring
I watched your previous auction video and was hooked immediately. Love being able to research from my recliner. One problem, now I have a huge death pile and am banning myself from HiBid until listed. LOL. Thanks for the video.
I follow you religiously I have learned so much from your videos. anyway I took your advice and got worth point and for anyone that doesn't know they're running a 7 day free trial thank you.👍🙂
I’ve been to a few live auctions, they are fun and usually take all day!! There are a few online auction houses near me, so I can just drive and pick up items, if I buy. You information is always so helpful and detailed, thank you Kat!!👍
One thing I do to save on shipping is if allowed, I supply the shipping label. One thing that bothers me is almost none of them send an invoice for the shipping. Makes it a pain for record keeping. I did have an issue with one auction house that never sent an invoice and I tried calling for a week. When I finely got ahold of someone they sounded like they were on drug and told me they couldn’t use the card on file and had restrictions for PayPal it was super sketchy. They were supposed to send me something so I could pay and never did. But out of the maybe hand full of bad sellers I’ve interacted with most were just an annoyance and extra cost. 98% good sellers. Some auctions houses take over a month for shipping. But I make money every time. I spend 3-4 hours a day most weeks searching hibid.
Thank you so much for this video. Will definitely be paying attention to “per lot” fees now if I’m interested in shipping. Sorry to hear Brad isn’t feeling better 😩 Sending good healthy vibes his way!!!
Great video, lots and lots of great information. Kat I started going to live sections about 5 years ago, (as you know), boy it's addicting. But now, I go to two to three live sections a week. Two places do them weekly, one place twice a month, and another once a month. Plus pur on-line auctions are crazy nuts. If I also decided to go to estate sales, we usually have any where from 30-85 daily within 100 miles from my home. Sourcing is definitely a blessing up here. Sorry so long.
Kat I haven't watch this video yet but I will promise. But I got got list perfectly and I'm already thrilled with it. I used flyp for a minute and the extension kept getting cancelled and it never would cross post to Ebay. And this one is with no issues. I wish I would had done it sooner.
Great Video Kat! Personally I am getting out of the thrifting business and in the midst of opening up my own Hibid Auction site. And Like Any new business, There's a lot to it at. First! 🤔lol 👍😉🇨🇦
Thanks Kat for another great video. I know that alot of people want to know how auctions work. I actually live just North of Seattle and I get an email showing estate sales and auctions within 100 miles of me. We do have a local auction house in Lynnwood that is starting to do live auctions again as Covid-19 is getting better but also online auctions. Dalton was having so much fun playing in the water off of the boat. You obviously did fine running the boat but it is definitely scary at 1st. I hope Brad starts feeling better soon.
Howdy Kat! Do you think some of the higher shipping costs may be auction houses that have already made agreements for the leftovers? I’ve experienced that with some in home estate sales. The coordinator already has other plans for the some of the stuff and has put astronomical prices on it. Look at you guys swimming! Far cry from holiday/call/weekend shifts. Still happy for your scrub escape! 🙌🏾
I’ve been using hibid for a year for sourcing. There are definitely bad sellers on the platform or I should say “ bad shippers”. I have had a couple items that were photographed on there good sides that were garbage. The learning curve was pretty steep. I made a lot of mistakes at first. Of course if I make $10 profit I consider that a mistake. I buy from hibid pretty much every week.
You're making it harder for us resellers - giving away our honey holes. I know you are trying to be a teacher, but the competition is getting crowded enough without this kind of video.
What honey hole would that be? Hibid? A online public auction site with thousands of auctions and millions of items? I'm here to help people, there is plenty of stuff to buy and millions of buyers to buy it. The whole I don't wanna help others and want to be greedy is not my thing. Good luck in your business. I also believe you get back what you put out there.....
Hi Kat! Thank you so very much for this fantastic information as well as all of the amazing re-selling information that you give us. Unfortunately I missed the online course that you provided for $25.00. You mentioned that it was made available afterwards. If still available, can you please let me know the website and information (I am having a difficult time finding where you gave that info. previously). I look forward to all of your amazing videos daily! Blessings, Have a Beautiful Day and Stay Safe :)🐬
I had bid on an online auction early on and spent about $170. I had the pickup days mixed up and lost out on the items. They donate them (allegedly) to goodwill. I was devastated.
Kat, I am new to reselling and bidding. What is your rule of the thumb for Max bidding. Like My current Max bid is if it cost 500 my max would be $150. To balance the profit. Do you think Im bidding to low or to high? I am also a mom of a toddler and this is more doable since I can’t go in person.
Liveauctioneers is a complete scam, fake items but the worst is the scam the auction houses run with the local UPS stores to 5x even up to 10x the shipping cost. You might win an item for say $60 but they will get you on the shipping. Shipping will cost you $400 on that $60 item. The local UPS store then splits the overage with the auction house. You have been warned.
I have used them before and didn't have this issue. It depends on the size and difficulty of item. I typically only buy small items if I'm getting them shipped because of this. There are hundreds of auction houses and hundreds of ups stores not all over charge just FYI
How do you find large lot auctions like the Harley pins and license plates some jewelry lots? Just a way of finding items like that? I live in Illinois. I've watched highbid and Illinois bid but nothing like that has had that types of lots. Which type of auctions do you usually bid on? Online estate auctions/consignment type/person downsizing?
By searching through auctions for hours most times is how I found them. I only buy 1-2 times a month when I am buying, good auctions like those don't come along often. I bid on mostly online only auctions and sometimes webast of all different types I look through them all if I'm needing inventory
Thank you very much for replying Kat!!! I Love Your videos and all the research ones. I enjoy watching all the things you resource! Dalton is adorable! I'm so happy for your success in reselling! Especially being able to quit nursing, stay home with Dalton, and run a great successful business! I'm 68 and I've collected things since about the age of 16. Back then you could get beautiful glass and collectibles for 10 cents or a quarter. Not anymore... lol For like 30 years I wanted to sell on Ebay, but never did. I've worked since I was about 14. I had 3 wonderful children worked normally about 50 to 60 hours a week in a auto plant. Worked on my college degree to prove to myself I could do it and get good grades. I graduated with my Bachelors degree in associate of arts when I was 55. I would've at 54 but had to drop out 1 semester to care for my Dad with Alzhemers. He lived with us for 4 years before he passed. Sorry to ramble. We rent a small house with 5 of us. We look to move because of the damage to the house from the roof and mold. Meanwhile we have storage unit with things packed. We did have a brick and mortar store and loved it but health issues and it had mold we had to close. We had over 2000 followers on Facebook. I just don't know what to do next. We're trying to get 1 large place to work out of at about a sixth of the cost. I take notes and pics from your videos and hope to join in August. You name it we probably have it. I love all vintage and antique everything... lol. If you could give any pointers or encouragement it would be greatly appreciated. I plan on asap joining to learn more as a member. Tyvvm!!! I look forward everyday watching your new and older videos!
Would I be crazy to bid on a lot of lace that is just pictured in a huge pile? Like how will I know that I got what I paid for? I will have no idea what condition it will be in. 😬
I'd like to mention that many auction houses have a group of people that are known to the auctioneers that can act can act as an absentee bidder on your behalf. They can send more pictures and tell you the condition and the size and confirm authenticity and then you give them the amount you're willing to bid and they become the floor bidder on your behalf. They can make arrangements for shipping. My husband and myself provide that service in Kansas City so I assume there's something similar in other cities
Do you have a video on pricing? And Auction versus Buy Now offer? My biggest challenge is that after checking Worthpoint and Sold prices on ebay, figuring out whether to list as an auction or as buy now. And when listing as auction, what the starting bid will be. I listed, what I thought would be a high dollar item, that went for much lower than expected. How do you figure out how to get the Best price for high dollar items? Thank you so much for your videos! I'm learning a LOT!
I suggest 99% of the time buy it now I rarely use auctions. If you do auctions your starting bid should be the lowest amount you're willing to take. For pricing look at what other of your exact item have been selling for.
@@TheNurseFlipper So with your high price sale items, you use "buy it now" based on research for previou sale prices? Thank you! I appreciate that you take the time to answer! Pretty Cool! Thank you.
@@TheNurseFlipper do you have any thoughts on whether signing up for Worthpoint is "worth" it for new resellers who are not necessarily looking at getting into this as a long-term business, but who may, for example, already possess a large amount of items that they wish to sell and may look into doing this just as more of a part-time side income - ? Or would just checking the sold prices on eBay be good enough for this type of reseller? (I don't know how much Worthpoint costs, to be fair).
Why do recommend that we watch an entire webcast auction - if any item/lots we were interested in bidding on have been done/auctioned, then why not turn off the rest of the auction???
Are you most likely to bid on a lot auction rather than a single item? It has been my experience I can hedge my bets better with a lot. There is always a chance if I bid on a single item there is damage not seen, with a lot I can sell the other items as well.
@@TheNurseFlipper so most of the auctions they know what they have... They have separated the good stuff out...I haven't really ventured much into the world of high value items yet. Bought that teapot but haven't listed it yet. Hope to do that soon!
What happens if most of the items received are damaged with returned tags and single shoes? Everything was supposed to be brand new store stock. On top of that, I accidentally bid an extra digit. I cannot believe this type of operation is allowed. I am still thinking of suing and publicly shaming them on national TV.
Not sure what you're bidding on. Personally I don't bid on fragile items to be shipped. I don't buy new stock or shelf pulls etc. Not the type of things I buy at all. I go for vintage one of a kind.
@@TheNurseFlipper I still have them sitting in the house. The only good thing, I was able to use the invoice to get ungated in Nike and Adidas last night.
Which County in Florida are you? I too live in Florida. I'm in Pasco County. A question - do you know where I can bring my items to sell at auction? I have lots of vintage & antique items that I inherited & need to, & want to sell. Any advice is welcomed. PS your eye glass frames are fabulous.
I live in Levy. If you're wanting to do a downsizing or estate auction you could search for an auction company. My mother in law lives there and might be interested in buying some. You can email me kat@thenurseflipper.com
I suspect success on hibid is niche dependent. My niche isn't collectible, and I stopped using hibid and only attend live auctions. Any single hibid auction rarely had enough items to make it worth the drive. I'd find myself obligated to pick up the "filler" items I bid on before being outbid on the "big hit" items that would have made the trip worth it. In contrast, at a live auction, I just bought something I made a 3900 percent profit on, something else for a 2566 percent profit and third thing I made a 1000 percent profit on. I could go on, but I won't bore you. These are not the type of experiences I had on hibid. In my opinion, at least for my niche, hibid is too easy: too easy to attend, research prices etc. There's no way to get an advantage from being willing to do what other people aren't willing to do, go where they're not willing to go or flex your bargaining skills at a live estate sale.
Not sure about that as I've bought in tons of niche areas and done very well. It does take a ton of time to find the good deals though. However, if you have a good in person auction with good stuff that's a great option for sure unfortunately I don't
@@TheNurseFlipper You do have an impressive amount of knowledge about the value of a wide range of things! I watch your videos and feel like I'm leaving money on the table! The things I buy are heavy "guy stuff" that typically needs to be crated or shipped LTL. Your videos are interesting to me because they're not what I'm used to. In terms of experience, I can relate better with something like auto parts ebayers shipping an engine or door. You may spend more time on research, where I spend more time on logistics. Location probably plays a role in terms of what's available.

I have used them before and didn't have this issue. It depends on the size and difficulty of item. I typically only buy small items if I'm getting them shipped because of this. There are hundreds of auction houses and hundreds of ups stores not all over charge just FYI
yea drive those auction prices up!! good job🙄
Not anymore... lol
For like 30 years I wanted to sell on Ebay, but never did.
@@mom3628 just start as soon as possible to build your business back up. I hope you find a good place soon! Sounds like you're motivated
@@TheNurseFlipper tyvm... that was fast!
Would I be crazy to bid on a lot of lace that is just pictured in a huge pile? Like how will I know that I got what I paid for? I will have no idea what condition it will be in. 😬
I don't sell lace so no idea if it's worth it if you've sold lace before and are familiar then possibly
Just be cognizant of how much space you have available. Having too much product is worse than not having enough.
You must have done just fine on the boat!
Yes Idid I just went very very slow LOL
Hi from kansas City!!❤️❤️
Hello!!
I wish I could block auction houses on hibid. It would save me a lot of time
I'd like to mention that many auction houses have a group of people that are known to the auctioneers that can act can act as an absentee bidder on your behalf.
Thank you.
@@beththomas3786 yes that's correct!
@@dawnieb.7394 if it's items you are regularly finding on Worthpoint yes just do monthly so you can end it whenever
Why do recommend that we watch an entire webcast auction - if any item/lots we were interested in bidding on have been done/auctioned, then why not turn off the rest of the auction???
Only until all of your items are done, I typically have items throughout
@@TheNurseFlipper Thank you for clarifying!
@@playhooky no problem
Are you most likely to bid on a lot auction rather than a single item? It has been my experience I can hedge my bets better with a lot. There is always a chance if I bid on a single item there is damage not seen, with a lot I can sell the other items as well.
It depends on the items the higher dollar ones I get most times are individual
@@TheNurseFlipper so most of the auctions they know what they have... They have separated the good stuff out...I haven't really ventured much into the world of high value items yet. Bought that teapot but haven't listed it yet. Hope to do that soon!
Thanks for another great video, very helpul
Happy to help
What did u mean regarding not telling us about key words?
I mean I have specific terms I use to find items once you've done it a while you'll develop your own you use to search with
@@TheNurseFlipper oh yes i do to. I thought that had to do with hibid
@@gardendaisy no just searching anywhere to buy
What happens if most of the items received are damaged with returned tags and single shoes? Everything was supposed to be brand new store stock. On top of that, I accidentally bid an extra digit. I cannot believe this type of operation is allowed. I am still thinking of suing and publicly shaming them on national TV.
Not sure what you're bidding on. Personally I don't bid on fragile items to be shipped. I don't buy new stock or shelf pulls etc. Not the type of things I buy at all. I go for vintage one of a kind.
@@TheNurseFlipper Clothes, what a disappointment!
@@judyd4210 yeah not my thing for sure
@@TheNurseFlipper I still have them sitting
in the house. The only good thing, I was able to use the invoice to get ungated in Nike and Adidas last night.
@@TheNurseFlipper Yeah, I know! I was just trying it out for the first time.
