I am just starting to tinker with ESPhome too, I read about the false triggers with motion sensors and learned using mmWave sensors is the better way to go.

I will definitely look into mmWave. I heard that the best solutions combine both PIR and mmWave because PIR is faster and mmWave is great for detecting presence

Personally I'm not a fan of static IP's in devices. You have to do extra bookkeeping and hard to (temporary) move a device to a different network etc. Just a DHCP reservation in the router is so much easier.
And a tip, give the device a friendly name and don't repeat that in every component :) So friendly name "Living room" and component name "LDR". Makes it wayyyyy easier to package the board (to be able to use one config for multiple boards) and for example HA will already prefix the device name to an entity name.
For the digi-pot, you could make an external component (or even make a pull request to get it into ESPHome) or you can just make a generic I2C device to set the correct config.
And you do know ESPHome even has a GUI aka ESPHome Dashboard? The biggest feature missing atm in ESPHome in my opinion is the ability to backup. Because yeah, you can backup the config easily but if you update ESPHome or even if a dependency is update the result can differ...

Thank you so much for your thoughts. Great input, especially because my next goal is to mount more of them to the ceiling :)
To me it looks like a generic i2c device is perfect to get the digi pot up and running quickly.
I integrated it already into my home assistant to get a nice GUI it's amazing.

One thing is missing. Aring of ws2812 leds, around it. Then you can make a ceiling light from it ;-)

that would actually be pretty cool 😁

    Awesome!
On which machine did you compile the firmware? It's super fast, so I’m more interested in that, lol!

it is really great, i always make all esp32 sensors myself, but this would be really great if all these sensors work together! maybe you could use a panasonic pir for motion detection such as EKMC1603111 these are very accurate and hardly give false positives. And maybe you could also process a mmwave sensor for detection even when people are standing still (hlk ld2450) and you can also set detection zones .

thank you for the great ideas. EKMC1603111 looks great, unfortunately I already bought sensors for all rooms so for now I will stick to them. I reduced the trigger level and it seems pretty accurate now :)

Excelent video. I'm just attached to the CPP code because of the flexibility, but I would buy your mega sensor with a nice case if it were affordable. Just an idea ;)

I agree that it is easy to get sensors and things that ESPHome supports up and running. But if-statements and while loops are something I haven't figured out yet. So I just stick to the Arduico CPP using VSCode. But maybe I haven't been looking good enough. I do have a temperature sensor, shich was a breeze to get up and running with ESPHome.

Actions, Triggers and Conditions are quite confusing for me too

@@playduino I have a few, but they are just copy pasted from someone else's code, I don't understand it. Maybe I'll invest some time and then I will do everting in the ESPHome yaml. But I have a feeling I'll keep using my way for a while. LOL

I have been working on a similar project, but utilizing poe+, can i send you one? Maybe work with you on it?

    • @playduino
      @playduino  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

For my sensors, poe (802.3af) is sufficient, but feel free to send me an email, I would like to learn more about your project :)

Anywhere I can just buy the fully assembled sensor board? I love to tinker, but I’d like to get a set of these and don’t want to deal with it.
