16-Year-Old Gets Stuck in 6-Foot-Deep Sand Hole at Beach

- Twenty firefighters and lifeguards dug to rescue a 16-year-old girl stuck in a sand hole. The dramatic rescue unfolded on Mission Beach in San Diego. Witnesses say the girl was digging in the sand with friends when she fell into the giant hole and could not get out. After 30 minutes, the girl was freed. It's reminding many of the beach horror that claimed the life of a 7-year-old girl. Inside Edition's Jim Moret has more.

Let this be a lesson to stop people from potentially digging their own grave. Feel for the parents of the little girl who lost her life. So sorry.

@@BrittAltdigging more holes? I’ve done it many times, never deep enough to be dangerous because we usually go for a big diameter rather than depth. We also often buried each other up to our neck in the sand afterwards, never close to shore though (obviously we also close the hole before going).
It’s just fun when you’re young and if you know to be cautious it’s also not that dangerous, you really just need to remember that the walls can cave in and use that as a boundary to know how deep and wide to dig. I think we never dug deeper that 4 to 5 feet, so never deeper than head level.
It's a god given right to dig holes in the beach, just be smart about it...

It should be illegal to do this at this point. My friend nearly broke her leg while falling into a hole at the beach. Children were playing in the sand, but also digging holes in every direction around us.
Lol ya sure. Maybe you can start a Hole Patrol and roam the beach being a buzzkill. At the same time you can kick over sandcastles because they're a tripping hazard.
Erosion happens, it not necessarily the fault of anyone. Kids can’t build sandcastles now, because your friend can’t identify a hole in the sand? I’ll give you a hint, it has a dark puddle at the top and your friend isnt equipped for walking on the beach.

I've known four people in my life who died this way. Two little brothers in the mid-1960s digging tunnels in a construction site, and two friends in the mid-1980s who were actually working construction when a trench collapsed in on them. Please stop digging holes in the sand at the beach.

A lot of beaches actually do ban large holes. If the police catches you digging one they could write you a ticket and ask you to refill the hole.

Seems like they need different lifeguards for sand holes like if they see them digging one just make them stop or leave. Drones could be used I guess. People need to have enough sense not to do that on their own though. Like parents

Maybe someday people will learn not to dig big holes in the sand. Everyone has played in a sandbox and knows sand has no stability, so this should be common sense
I feel this is probably why when guys dig holes. they dig them wide and more like a crater. Rather than just digging a single pillar straight down.

Honestly, though? Unless some innocent random person gets killed by this, this is literally just the consequences of ones actions. Can't arrest someone from wanting to kill themself.
Beaches should ban digging like this and people who do it should be charged with endangering the public. It’s one thing to build a sandcastle….but digging holes shouldn’t be allowed..and neither should covering people with sand.
Moral of the story: never bury yourself when digging 6-foot holes at the beach.

I was actually at the beach when this happened. I didn’t see anything but I saw a ton of firetrucks going towards the beach while leaving mission beach.
The real tragedy is only left side audio, had my right earbud in and didn’t hear a single word. Thought i had gone deaf.

Her and her friends were probably all inside the hole while they were digging it. When the hole got deep enough, the others got out, but she got trapped because the weight of the others on the edge of the hole made the sand collapse.

Why do people not have common sense at the beach/on vacation? Construction sites and other work places have very strict codes about shoring up when digging/excavating at the depths these kids were in. This doesn’t even factor in the hazard of water.

She is SO lucky the hole was not just a foot or so deeper or she would have been underneath the sane. Sloan and her brothers story had stuck with me all summer! Will not be forgetting them anytime soon! I’m surprised anyone of any age is still digging hole in sand after that tragedy. This makes twice , thsnkfully ended okay but hopefully after this people will truly recognize the dangers of this. I don’t blame them. Before the news story about Sloan and her brother at the beginning of summer, I would have never imagined the possible danger 😢

The pain of losing your child in a freak accident must be, but how strange when even on top of that the accident becomes a national news story. A part of me gets it, why you would do an interview but another part of me can’t imagine wanting to talk about it like that.
