I wasn't expecting to have this much fun with a new Floating Points'-I haven't loved any of his other albums. But the guy consistently delivers here. Despite the lack of variety, the rigorous pacing helped a lot in keeping the formula every track follows fresh, but the rumbling and colorful arpeggios are what made me enjoy the album so much. It's impressive how much personality those bouncy little sounds add, especially in Fast Forward. Pure earcandy.
So glad you agree with my enthusiasm of this one. One of the most enjoyable listens I’ve had with a tech house album and is probably his best album to date. I just love how consistent the whole thing is and how it delivers back to back quality without ever feeling like it’s slowing down. My fave track might Birth4000 because of how hard the bassline goes, but there’s a lot of tracks to like here. Might be my AOTY so far. Really great stuff!
my second floating points album i’ve heard, after promises, and i really loved this one too! every track brings something unique to the table and it all feels so cohesive too
Another great review as usual;, and good to hear how much this one stood out for you! This one I definitely didn't fall in love with at first listen, which was disappointing since I adore tech house usually, but after hearing your thoughts and Fantano's and giving it a few more tries it's definitely growing on me. Simultaneously excited yet nervous to hear what you have to say for the Jamie xx though, especially since you mentioned a slight burn-out in house music and its abundance this last few years and uh...
I think Jamie xx of all people is probably gonna be safe from any kind of harsher review from me what with his thing having been my single most anticipated album of the entire year and everything, but that is the exact reason I mentioned needing more time to sit with it lmao
I really like Promises, it was one of my favourites of the year ,this is another direction but equally as good. I bought this and the Napa Sinephro (Endlessness) album on vinyl in the same week as Cascasde, so far they are equal contenders for my album of the year. Thoughts on Nala Sinephro, under the Warp label.?
Honestly Floating Points is 4/4 in terms of albums imo. Everything he puts out is at very least great to me, and I will say that this album definitely has a lot of his style. Like it's a bit derivative, but I can clearly recognize that the guy behind this album is the same guy behind LesAlpx, Bias and Environments from Crush. His production is just on point as always and I LOVE THE PACING OF THIS ALBUM OMG. Ocotillo will probably go down as one of my favorite tracks of this year for sure.
You have mentioned this house and garage revival in your videos but since i have been a bit out of the loop when it comes to popular edm, what are some major examples in this change in sound in the mainstream and which album or albums started this trend? Was it an album like Future Nostalgia or Honestly, Nevermind? Or was it something more obscure?
I don't know if the trend starting can necessarily be pinpointed to one album or track (maybe Dua Lipa & Calvin Harris's One Kiss if we're talking mainstream crossovers?), it had been gradually building up at the beginning of the decade with artists like Four Tet, Disclosure, Nathan Fake and Kelly Lee Owens among others picking up more buzz than usual around the time, but the point at which it felt like EVERYONE got on board was 2022, from that point onward we got Beyoncé's Renaissance, Skrillex's Quest For Fire, Diplo's self-titled, Bonobo's Fragments, the rise of Fred Again in general, Romy's Mid Air, Overmono's Good Lies, ODESZA's The Last Goodbye (not purely house but taking more influence from the scene than anything else they'd done previously), and basically every single album pushed by Ninja Tune in the past couple of years, see Sofia Kourtesis, Barry Can't Swim, LP Giobbi, Jayda G, DJ Seinfeld, etc. Drake was there too I guess but within the scene I think we were all just giving him the side-eye at his latest attempt to colonize another new genre without putting forth the bare minimum effort to actually understand the culture lol

Cool review. I love the album. Very consistent all the way through and makes me want to throw shapes.

Maybe it was Fred again's work on the Bad Habits track by Ed Sheeran
