I'll choose the M3 CSL because it's the best ever built in NA era, just the 100 kilos diet compared to the normal version gives a dream drivers car. The manual conversion unleashes the true potential and saves a lot of money in future maintenance.

The M156 6.2 V8 is probably the best V8 ever made. I am a huge BMW M Fanboy, but previously owned a W204 C63 and the engine is epic. The C63 Black is my favourite AMG car.
Love both cars!! They're so different that it's wrong to compare them indeed. But I will say this: the CSL's looks and especially the exhaust sound puts a huuuggee smile on my face!
Nice review Matt. Those B roads look like a lot of fun. I recently reviewed the M3 CSL alongside the M2 CS and was surprised, like you, at how entertaining it was. I owned one back in 2010/2011 and didn't fall in love with it then, but cars have got a lot heavier over the last 10 years! I'd be interested to try it with the manual box. I owned a C63 BS in red with comfort spec and loved the engine, but found the suspension way too firm to use as a daily driver. Happy New Year gents.
Thank you Mark! Enjoyed your video too and can't get enough CSL content lately! Funny how we all went on the pursuit of the latest and greatest and now are going back to find the cars from the noughties.
"the whole car comes together! its the ultimate driving experience!" that is why the e46 is a living legend - every thing in that car is designed for that car with a type of quality, prestige and purpose you do not find anymore.. the E46 is too good of a car to keep BMW making money- since then planned obsolescence, cheap plastic, less attention to detail ... BMW needs to continue driving up revenue & having a true ultimate driving machine would keep people too satisfied and unwilling to buy a new car. E46 was the last of a generation
A genuine CSL is not manual. So unfortunately this isn’t a valid comparison of the CSL with the black series for me. But I still enjoyed the video so thanks for sharing.
Good work Matt 👍🏻 Great presenter with bags of enthusiasm and knowledge. Really enjoyed that thanks alot. CSL all day long for me and with a manual conversion WOW

Stunning video. I’d rake the CSL all day long, however I can’t believe you showed so many CSL exhaust clips and clips of the car going away from the camera, but not one of the glorious intake sound coming at the camera hard :(
Theres a reason why the CSL originally was SMG. @Fit. Are you sure about the quarter mile? To date the fastest I’ve seen was from 3 pedal. Google Lee Mathew. 12.7 seconds. Not exactly stock from a weight standpoint but engine bone stock. I have the 3 pedal. The only SMG I raced I was able to easily beat. My car just had more power. I was for sure lighter with my Gruppe M titanium muffler at the time. He had a super sprint muffler at the time from what I recall. So whether from a dig or roll race my car was faster. The odd thing is that I do have an F1 F430 and it’s clearly a better performer vs the gated 6 speed from Ferrari. That has to be the worst and slowest shifter on the planet. I went back to the stock muffler on the M3. All I have is a light weight battery. It’s still a fun car to drive but it’s not at the same level as the F430.

Yep we’ll be featuring an SMG next spring as part of a special shoot we’re planning. What we said about the CSL in general thigh is the same whichever gearbox it has.
You need to turn T C fully off and then an extra shift speed appears. Turn it to its fastest setting, wind the motor to 8000rpm and click the right paddle. It’s anything but slow and clumsy in full attack! No way a manual changes faster or with such ferocity. I love the smg in my csl, owned it 16 years from brand new! The engine and induction noise in the cabin is second to none! The csl gets better and better the harder and faster you drive it! Even the engine gets sharper when it’s thrashed, been thrashing mine for 125,000 mile and it’s still feels amazing.
There's a guy on my kids school run has a csl and it makes me dream every day I had a 330ci not the same I no but I had a blast . I point it out to the kids and they scoff because they remember my 330 and think it's the same . I'd love to take them for a spin n wake em up

I'd love to take them for a spin n wake em up
I can pick a winner for you its easy the black series all day. also thanks for the video ienjoy these keep them coming
Thanks for watching 🙌
Can’t beat that V8 no matter how good the csl is and the csl is my fave car

If I ever win the lottery, first thing I'm gonna do is manual-convert an M3 CSL, then manual convert a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale and then get a Carrera GT. Dream garage.
