my favorite “misogynistic” character ever written has to be sokka from avatar the last airbender. he’s naturally written, and his progression makes sense. this dude feels so inorganic tho.
Sokka grew up in a society with highly enforced gender roles. He had been raised to believe that men best served the role of warrior/breadwinner while women were better at housekeeping. When he explored new cultures and found indisputably that this was not true, he apologized and humbled himself. It was such a simple, honest part of his character progression compared to this abomination
My dream as a young artist was to make my own manga/ or comic and potential get a show. Seeing this, really boosted my confidence. If they can put this and the anime adaptation of berserk, I know that they will put anything on there.

@@legalza0843 that's easy to get past actually, they didn't even actually develop the trans character, proving that they don't even care about the minorities, they only want bonus points and big companies will buy anything if you say you got what the teens want, just put on a character that screams 'I WAS A DUDE BEFORE!' even couple of episodes and you're good, the reviewers won't even bother checking cuz they don't really care either, they also just want any kind of show that has diverse people to say "look at us teens, we support minorities, you can keep giving us money **clown nose noises** " just make whatever plot you want, don't matter how shitty, generic, or badly developed it is anyways, make the main character's only personality trait being: gay (since apparently, homosexuality isn't a preference but yes a character definition), and then send to Netflix or Crunchyroll, it will probably get animated

I personally wouldn't respond like that, but it did feel natural and I've seen similar responses before. on top of that it had Flavor(TM) that they could've built on instead of mixing it into the stew of 23+ ideas where there should've be one. i think that the issue is that they had "bits" of concepts but then didn't build on or space them out.

If a bunch of animators fail to represent the most basic human movement or fails to write believable dialogue or utterly fail at mixing in such a way that the background music covers the dialogue or causes a character (Slime Boy) to sound like the VA was half asleep or drunk...the show *TO ME* is bad. Enough free passes, male/female/trans/asexual/polysexual/homosexual/lesbian/LGBTQUFDGDHTGHDYIIGDSDGHUY2565VR5366576$#@!+#/&_€$× is not an excuse to offer a subpar product. I assure you that 90% of the "haters" would have admitted of having been wrong IF the show was actually good. I would have. As it is, this is at best a 6/10 show on my scale. Sexism, misogyny or whatever else has nothing to do with it. I want quality in my entertainment, then the character can fuck/get fucked how they want, I don't care about that.
This is why, and no I will never call the show and anime, but I've heard a lot of sjw's talk about support female anime writers blah blah blah but to be honest with you, as someone who calls myself a feminist and an otaku, the most feminist anime I've watched and manga I've read were written by men, ironically, the stuff written by women, we're actually quite condescending towards women. It's almost like they had internalized misogyny or something. They hyper focused way too much on a roll of a woman and basically a lot of female tropes that just need to die off for goodness sakes, and I have to say, in comparison, evangelion is a whole heck of a lot more politically correct than this show by a long shot. It shows a humanized, non-toxic masculine male character, and authentic representation of a boy with actual complicated emotions who cries, and isn't a stereotype in any direction, and deals with the very real problem of daddy issues. It is vent art, and to be honest with you, while I love the basis of the plot, I really struggle to watch evangelion, just simply because especially if someone who's been sexually assaulted before, I just can't watch the poor thing go through several seasons of episodes living with a woman who's literally grooming him. If you don't know what I'm talking about, note like the first scene, where he has a photograph of the woman who's supposed to pick him up, and literally, misato has a photograph of her with handwritten notes on it pointing out her cleavage and everything, it was so disturbing. I've really feel bad for the poor kid, I know he's fictional, but that's why I can't watch it, I just feel too bad for him and I will always cringe at the female characters in that anime, I'm guessing it was reflective of something the creator of it went through, I'm assuming also how he sexualizes shinji's sexual abusers, I kind of wondered if the guy was maybe groomed by women growing up?? I don't know it seems very likely to me, either way, I feel really bad for both the writer as well as the fictional character he wrote that goes through all kinds of horrendous things. Either way though, evangelion has much better social representation than this show ever will Edit: I was using voice to text, and how I said anime made Google think I said enemy
So to sum up this scene: Some guy makes an announcement to a the team that girls are hot Girl gets offended. He calls the girl stuck up. The captain acts like he was just caught doing drugs behind the bleachers. This show must be how aliens think humans interact.

The animation does not suck even though the style is not my cup of tea, the rest is just bad, I wonder if a rewrite dub and I mean a Ghost Stories-level of departure from the original source could actually make this something bearable.
I’ve noticed a trend in modern fiction of having racists, sexists, etc. be very exaggerated to the point of being completely unbelievable. A lot of writers don’t bother to show subtle forms of discrimination because they don’t have the ability and don’t want to make the attempt to cultivate it, they think, “Audiences are too stupid to understand subtle discrimination, so I’d better make it as blatant as possible!” or both. When I heard Disney was making a Mulan remake, I noted, “I’m afraid they’ll make the sexism really blatant because they’ll think, ‘How else are people supposed to know when characters are being sexist?’” (It turned out that was the least of my concerns, but it was still a valid concern)
That was already the case in mulan, or do you think the line “she’s a woman! She’ll never be worth anything” was subtle discrimination? Granted I think these live action “adult” remakes are completely unnecessary
@@vondas1480 I mean yeah, Mulan is literally set in historical China. That said it still wasn’t as heavy handed as the remake. For example the scenes with her dad following her botched marriage interview. In the animated they also chose to hing at Mulan’s intelligence throughout the beginning and naturally bring it back as she made up for her lack of physique and lack of military training with it. Whereas in the remake she’s just kinda better than everyone at everything all the time. The remake also really strained her relationship with her father to focus first on the clash between her taking his place before establishing that in most normal circumstances he supported her without caring about her role “as a woman” in society and just wanted her to be happy and had faith she’d achieve that in life no matter what. They’re both definitely mot subtle about it, but one incorporates it far better into weaving an interesting story with characters you care about. The one just centers everything around it and doesn’t realize it’s undermining the very point it thinks its making.
I heard somewhere (tho do fact check if I'm wrong) that the characters weren't voiced by voice actors but by phisical actors (like in movies and such). And to top the fact that they didn't have experience in acting just with their voice they also didn't have a director
Ngl it doesn't even feel like a "Toxic Male" insult. Like, yeah, the "She's just a regular girl but she's REALLY good at this" is kinda demeaning (See the Knuckles Boom quote) but it's an attempt. The hostile reaction honestly should have been a "Yeah, she good, but her gender doesn't matter, she's talented." He even CORRECTS THE NICKNAME HE GAVE. Plus, the last line feels like a really-badly placed joke, but that's probably a voice acting casualty. And when he calls Rosemary "Stuck up", he's actually not wrong. He gave a shit compliment, but he seems to be trying. And, the final nail in the coffin, NOBODY TALKS LIKE THIS.
They weren't even able to complain about misoginia, and it ended up making the guy look like the good one. My god, this is the only scene i watched from this show and its terrible.
He literally sounds like a socially awkward guy trying to compliment her and making a dumb joke, but everyone is acting like he's creeping on her... they're reactions are almost completely unrelated to what's happening

I feel like hgs was a confidence booster to aspiring creators who have actual talent but are kinda nervous about putting it out there. I don’t think that’s what crunchyroll intended, but that’s what happened
Hold on, I can explain this scene just fine. Aster starts the clip sincere, praising his crush. Then, he is told to take it back a notch. He does this through making a joke. His joke is producing an overly dramatic speech about his recent loss. But not realising that he should probably stop praising Rosemary, he leads the joke straight into continuing the praise, although in a less aggressive manner. This all characterises him as someone who: -Is passionate for what he loves (Hence the praise, and hence why he is impossible to derail from it) -Is socially blind (Since he clearly can't read the room) -Is not bothered by trivial failure (Since he jokes about a recent loss) -Is somewhat intelligent (Since he can come up with a joke in about a second) -Tries being considerate (Since he does reduce the intensity of the praise, even if he doesn't stop) Then the writers realise that "softboy with Asperger's" is too likeable and turn him into a stuck-up prick, thereby destroying 4 of the 5 traits established in the same scene.
I couldn't tell without the context of seeing more of the show if he was antagonistic towards her and was being sarcastic or if he fancied the pants off her and was managing to make a complete fool of himself while trying to praise her. But yeah acting like he did something seriously wrong by doing so was a bit weird. No blood was spilled. Not if the adult then followed that up with a conversation about how to speak to someone you are crushing on without antagonising them - that might be helpful - but I suspect a show like this isn't going to take the show's spotlight away from the protagonist to show such a conversation or even admit to his motivations and if they are positive or negative - they might not even care - they instead only care about how she feels about what he says not what he intended to say be it good or bad.
Yes Yes everything you just said was what I was thinking. I just couldn't put it into words but yeah they aren't establishing this character like what a human would act.
The change in tone and mood did not make sense here at all. They never tried to have him establish any reasoning of why he started acting like a stuck up prick. No asking of questions or trying to understand each other.

my favorite “misogynistic” character ever written has to be sokka from avatar the last airbender. he’s naturally written, and his progression makes sense. this dude feels so inorganic tho.

This is legitimately how they view all men as.
To them, this IS perfection.
Either way though, evangelion has much better social representation than this show ever will

I want the violet one to be a screaming racist
Yeah the animation is ok. And if there were plushies, they would be really cute.
Subtlety is a dead art form I’m afraid to say

@@benduford3746 that’s how they ruined spongebob

You missed the: *character smiles while holding back tears* “well I’m so sorry that my family is p o o r, and my dog has c a n c e r, but at least I have morals unlike you-“ proceeds to rant for ten minutes then everyone’s “shocked” bc this character is “such a nice person” as they storm off
I write better fanfics than this pls--
I'd like to say; even bad fanfics often have more natural feeling dialogue.
@@scottgaultney wtf your pfp
Should this series be considered an insult to actual talented women writers?
Yes, and also to all writers.
Yes. And to anime. And tk all shows in general. It should be an insult to the use of language itself.
that's how i feel
Oh, most definitely.
yes without a doubt
The voicing makes it sound like an abridged series
All that’s left is for him to say, “well, excuuuuuuuuse me princess” and his character is complete.
Seriously though, he looks like knock off Link
or do the dubbed Zero.
So this is why Nintendo never lets Link talk, lol.
His name has to be Chain
Excuse me princess is at least comprehensible as sarcasm. This is indecipherable.
@@microwave8931 Or Locke
Not only does this guy have good opinions about girls climbing walls, but he also has a pocket dimension over his left shoulder: 0:13.
This looks familiar
Mmmmmhhhhh
With the sound effects, it almost sounds like he sliced his back open
His sword works as a spine
Bruh gta style
You know
As someone who’s writing a book and hoping someday enough people care about it to get a whole show
This cheers me up, because even if it’s bad, it can’t be *THAT* bad.
As an amateur writer, I feel the same thing :P
I can agree with this as I'm planning on making a game that hopefully gets to be an anime
I'm the same! currently planning and making all the ideas to start the book smoothly so i don't have that much mistakes and it gets considered "good". not like this show bruh, this is exactly the thing i am trying to evade 😎
I feel like hgs was a confidence booster to aspiring creators who have actual talent but are kinda nervous about putting it out there. I don’t think that’s what crunchyroll intended, but that’s what happened
Finally, someone put it on words.
Still somehow better writing than velma.
Mhm.
real
Oh nah don’t even get me STARTED on Velma. 😤
Was that a high bar to clear?
@@dotfoxtom5942 Nope lol. 🤣
This all characterises him as someone who:
-Is passionate for what he loves (Hence the praise, and hence why he is impossible to derail from it)
-Is socially blind (Since he clearly can't read the room)
-Is not bothered by trivial failure (Since he jokes about a recent loss)
-Is somewhat intelligent (Since he can come up with a joke in about a second)
-Tries being considerate (Since he does reduce the intensity of the praise, even if he doesn't stop)
Then the writers realise that "softboy with Asperger's" is too likeable and turn him into a stuck-up prick, thereby destroying 4 of the 5 traits established in the same scene.
And? Why does he have to be likeable?
Yes Yes everything you just said was what I was thinking. I just couldn't put it into words but yeah they aren't establishing this character like what a human would act.
The change in tone and mood did not make sense here at all. They never tried to have him establish any reasoning of why he started acting like a stuck up prick. No asking of questions or trying to understand each other.
@@ieatbatteries7 why can't he be likable?
It's like Tumblrina's shower arguments but they actually put it in the show.
I like how the show turned out to be precisely what all of its critics expected it to be
Oh god. Imagine a pokemon clover sequel with gym leaders like these?
Yeah
@@thedesensitizedsympathizer5307 you know how in most old Pokemon games, there are two different titles? If we already have Pokemon Clover, would the second title be Pokemon Drinkware, since you can't call it Pokemon Tumblr?

These line reads don't sound like they were from the same conversation. It almost sounds like the showrunners used sentence mixing to splice together a scene.
These are the people who say that male writers can't write female characters, then write men like this.

@@burningmagyk4986 Yes.
@@enkelegy xD love it, well played.
The more I see clips of this, the less I understand what this show is supposed to be about.
This show has no soul. And it shows.
But muh diversityyyyyyyyy
The entire point of the show is to be one of those '21st Century Moral Definitions' like Steven Universe where it's just all about social issues that have literally no weight when compared to actual contemporary world events and problems.
In fact, it doesn't even show anything. Its just nothing.
People still don't even know what the hell is a "Guardian" supposed to be.
@@protobust262 The problem is likely that there aren't any stakes. No real conflict, no stakes, no mystery make for a boring story.
I loved the way he said "Should've known you were stuck up", never watched this show before but he became my favorite character just because of that.

laughing at script on accident
Honestly, I would be laughing too due to the awkwardness, lol
It’s soooo jarring haha
This isn't dialogue, these are lines chosen at random.
As I said, sounds like they're talking *at* each other, not *to* each other.
The Oblivion conversations about mudcrabs are more cohesive than this.
It’s like there’s an entire sentence or two missing between some of these lines. It’s that badly written.
"We need to have a word. Ganon's trying to destroy Hyrule again"
“Well excuuuuuuuuse me, Princess!”
“A settlement needs your help. Here, I’ll mark it down on your map for you.” 🗺

I like how uncreative aster’s “toxic masculinity” is. It’s so incredibly basic. What a one-note, token, stereotype character. Gotta have him be white, blonde haired, and blue eyed too. What revolutionary ground the writers are exploring here. It’s funny seeing them try to make cultural statements while simultaneously revealing their own prejudices.
that had "i hate men" writen all over lol.
I think a really good display of toxic masculinity was Sokka from Avatar: The Last Airbender
@@Nana-wi4gi Sokka was memorable lol how was he bad?!
@@JonkoSlunko What. I'm saying toxic masculinity was really portrayed well through him before he had his whole arc. He was sexist and had a skewed idea of what it meant to be a man. But it was never malicious and he genuinely cared about people.
