- Are the Canucks better or worse than the team that lost in seven games to the Oilers? How much pressure will Elias Pettersson be facing as he heads into next season? Is the off-season mostly complete for Vancouver? Should the Canucks be thinking about a possible extension for Brock Boeser? TSN Canucks reporter Farhan Lalji joins SC with Jay Onrait to share his answers.
I don't think it can be argued that they are worse than they were at the beginning of last season. When the Canucks were playing their best regular season hockey, they didn't have Lindholm or Zadorov. All the guys that made important plays during that time are still on the team, the dead weight (sorry Ilya) are gone. I also think we have to acknowledge that under Tocchet a lot of the players have really turned their game around, who is to say the same won't be done for Debrusk or the other new acquisitions? Regardless, we'll have to see, as a fan I sure am going to miss Lindholm and Zadorov, but it was unrealistic that the team could keep them simply because of cap limitations.
Well said
100%
Totally disagree. The Canucks had Mikheyev (11 goals all year), Kuzmenko (showed up to camp in beer league condition), Beauviller (over paid non factor), and Lafferty. This year they start the season with, DeBrusk, Heinen, Sprong and Sherwood. Petey didn't have anyone to play with all year and still put up 89 points. Even DeBrusk for Lindholm swap is a win for the Canucks. The makeup of the team going into the playoffs was a disjointed mess. 3 top 2 centres just like they had with Horvat. And all because Pettersson played games with Allvin and handcuffed him during the TDL. The Canucks are far more deeper and dangerous in all 4 lines than they were last year at any point in the season.
@@MSmith-cp1tz Yes I agree! maybe my comment was worded strangely, but I think the Canucks are going to have a very good season. I'm excited to see where this new forward group takes them. As long as the list of goalie injuries gets solved.
We will have to see what the team does during the regular season but to me the moves feel pretty lateral. Lindholm is probably the better player over a longer sample size than DeBrusk but I also think DeBrusk fills a role as a top line winger on the Canucks that can dig in corners and battle for pucks.
I think this team is competing again for their division and could put up a 100+ point season but the room that Allvin and Rutherford have given themselves to grow this team the next few years is what fans should be excited about.
Pettersson will get 105+ and Canucks will do better. It really comes down to Demko staying healthy
We didn't lose the Oilers series just because of Demko's absence
Just speed and grit along the wings Left - Debrusk, Heinan, Joshua, Podz Right - Boes, Hogz, Garland, Sherwood. Down the middle you already know! And a Hulking defense core surrounding Quinn. -Aman 13th
Better because mikheyev is gone
As much as I agree with this, that kid is just cursed.
He is always gifted prime opportunities but simply can not fucking CAPITALIZE.
He has the best chance in game 7 against the Oilers this pervious year and just absolutely whiffed it.

Petey didn't have great wingers and that didn't help. But certainly his mindset needs work. I'm on about this at times - you pay whatever to improve players' performance physically. Socially, it's much more acceptable for people anywhere to get counselling, use systems like yoga and meditation for calmness. So then teams should prescribe it the way they do physical rehab. Sure, there are fans and coaches and management that still think toughness should come out in all personalities naturally when you're a pro, but hey, it's the 21st century, and you have a lot invested in this guy. If you don't improve his mindset, then you won't be able to move him anyway, so invest in mental toughness too.
A real superstar makes his line better and doesn't need super line mates to increase his talent. Thanks for admitting Petey is just a Greedy clown
@Matt-nj1yh i argree with you
Its a good point.
Easy, better. The only thing that got a little worse was the defence, but it’s basically the same if not better than it was at the beginning of last year. We added a crap ton of offensive depth and our 4th line players score 15+ goals ever season, but ours last year were scoring 4 or 7. Much better overall lineup. And silovs is he backup to demmers
Not so sure. Alot rides on Demko staying healthy and Broek stays health and JT.
The Canucks stayed very healthy last year so it’s quite possible we have a better team this year that finishes with fewer points.
I sure finish at same level or little less. Team is not so different since lindholm and zardov came late season. Mostly same team intact.
Well health is a Critical thing for every team in the league, not strictly the Canucks. Yes Demko and Boeser have had some health issues, but JT has been solid for his time here, and knock on wood, he can keep that going next season. Demko and Boeser will make full recoveries in the off season, and with Silovs being a very solid back up, they can have demko rest a few more games, and can confidently put SIlovs on net without worry.
Boeser 8 years at 8.75 Calling it now
I'll betcha he gets less than the Captain.
Skates in concrete and gets $8 Million for ONE decent season ?

@@mrchi3f1179not to mention the blood clots in his leg during the playoffs
allvins still gonna be making moves they got better.
They're not better now.
I argree with that they are not better @tedcity5861
@@tedcity5861 I wouldn't say that. They got a lot faster with Debrusk, Heinan and Sherwood which should be huge for a slow team. They also got harder to play against with those guys. Chemistry of role players is important so we will see. I am just happy to have a management team that identifies types of players it needs and gets them at reasonable prices as opposed to the previous collect other teams reclamation projects that never panned out.
I think the improvements up front, are greater than the losses on the back end so I would say slightly better but not by much.
@rickweber2556 Jake debrusk isn't fast and heinan sometimes get lost in his position
The only one that was a big loss was zadorov. Really felt we shoudlve resigned him over Myers
Silov is such a steal!…. I think this goalie is underrated but not for long.
Guys they were out of first overall in the league by 6 points! Looking the acquisitions the Nucks will have their solid fist line, best 3rd line again, and significant improvement on the third line which may result in the best fourth in the league. Its the second line chemistry that is the wild card. In goal and defence they are fine with more depth.
Boston will be a monster now crazy how good their defense is. Lindholm balances out their top 6,
Canucks improved this summer & Added a ton of more quality depth. When you look at where each player is slotted in the line up atm, this management team knows what they are doing. Brock Boeser needs to be extended. Would be nice to trade our 1st round pick 2026 @ the deadline to add a top 6 RW to bolster the Debrusk Petey line. Sprong is a nice addition atm, but Lekkerimäki’s true calling in 1-2yrs time. I think adding another RH shot depth D guy like Barrie could play dividends long run. Otherwise Vancouver made the right decision in letting Lindholm & Zadorov walk. D core look solid as long as everyone plays to their potential with some solid depth to call upon. An optimistic upcoming season for Vancouver as we head into the next 8-10yrs of being a very competitive team.
As a Canuck fan, ill try and not be biased, but I think they have improved in some areas, but might be slightly worse in some areas. I like what they did with the forward signings, DeBrusk is a solid pick up, as well as some of the depth players. Their defense might be slightly worse off with losing Zadorov and picking up Desharnais, but won't be too dissimilar. Obviously signing Silovs is a no brainer, and the kid should be a money goalie for the Canucks in the backup role with Demko.
Getting some solid players to play with Pettersson is probably the best thing they could have done in the off season, so I hope they play well together, and Pettersson can have an amazing year with his new contract.
That is why Farhan called it a push right?
2:35 was the biggest joke of a penalty. Petey had the puck, HE was the one getting hit and he gets 2 mins for bracing himself.
They are definitely tougher to play against…. As long as debrusk can score with Petey. They are a better team for sure
So... as long as the newbie can support the work horse on his shoulders. wow! I didn't realize Petey was such a weak child, maybe Allvin will trade for his mother so she can also help him earn his massive over priced contract.
@@Matt-nj1yh Petey’s wingers: kuzemenko and mikeyev majority of the season. Kuz out, hoglander in. Imagine playing with players who have bricks for hands.
Is it a coincidence that he clicks so well with miller and boeser??
Are you new? Or just lack hockey knowledge? Petey set up mik so many times he literally should’ve had 40 goals! Mik is where the puck goes to die!
@@larrygill2223 It's because Boeser and Miller have actual talent! Miller is by far the best player on the team and should be the captain and (player coach) Lose miller you lose the team, lose Petey, you gain 3 new players
@@larrygill2223 It's amazing how Kuzemenko's game improved after he left the Greedy Petey line. I guess Kadri is just plain better than Petey. At least Kadri stayed on the 1st line all season, meanwhile Petey moved from 1st to 4th from centre to winger... desperation!
@@Matt-nj1yh just like how kuz killed it in his first year here. Clearly you’re not a Canucks fan so why are you being a troll right now 🤦🏽♂️. I couldn’t imagine myself going on a rival forum or TH-cam video on a rival team and comment against it 🤣.
You must be a leafs fan
The players that left barely affected goal-scoring in the regular season or playoffs! The players we added will add more offense! The difference is that we are a more physical and gritty team loaded up with Tocchet-type players who will play strong defense! We have great penalty killers and hitters added through free agency and the difference I believe will not be many more goals scored as much as fewer goals scored against! The goal differential should be wider!
No over paid contracts like Boston or other teams added cap friendly contract.. win win
Such as shame CapFriendly was bought out and shut down. I am still in mourning.
Who were the star players for the Canucks in the playoffs? Boeser Miller zadorov lindholm Joshua garland. 2 of them gone so hard to say.

played half the season injured and still got 89 points?....yeah im not worried about pettersson
Thats misleading. Youre implying that he was going to pot twice that, which is not a thing.
@@TheScotian82 you are the only one implying anything here, where did i say he would have scored 196 points?
The thing that gets got lost in all this is how much better Dakota Joshua and Conner Garland will too. Last year there was times where the Canucks as a whole just looked awful and couldn’t put the puck in the back of the net. Even though it starts with EP40 salary wise but it all starts with QH43 and JT9 and their success will trickle down.
Only time will tell
Profound!
Canucks have a bunch of trees on the backend now...Lolol
Are trees better than pylons? asking for a friend
@@Matt-nj1yh Our trees can sort of skate a bit(Myers, Soucy, and maybe Forbort(?)). The pylons that can't skate don't have a place in the game anymore...
I thought they should have kept Zadorov but I don't know.
Slightly better. Lekkerimaki might crack the big squad too.
I think the Canucks got a tiny bit better, but they were the 6th best team in the league last year, so a tiny bit better means a top 5 finish is likely.
Slightly worse but DeBrusk could do really well and help carry the team. Zadorov trade was worth it, but they gave up alot for just 39 games of Lindholm...
They had the best shooting percentage and 6th best sv% last year.
Regression is a helluva drug and it will kick in to some degree next season.
Having an elite #1 goalie means you should have a high Sv%. You can make a good argument for shooting regression, but if you watch the team play you'd notice they're like the reverse hurricanes, Tocchet said he'd rather them put the puck in the corner than shoot an unscreened shot for an easy turnover and transition. That's gonna inflate your % just from not wasting hope shots.
I would say better than the start of last season but not as good as at the trade deadline
Lindholm and Zadorov arrived at the end of a very successful season.
Does trading pety for Brady Tchuck and a '25 1st make sense if you're going for the cup?
What makes you think tychuck is on the market?
B. Tkachuck (Ott) wants to play in USA . Same with his brother M. Tkachuk (Fla)
No because that would make Teddy Blueger or Pius Suter our second line center
Tkachuk for Greedy Petey, straight across. Vancouver is getting the better player, so there's no way the Sens include a pick.
Sprong signed this video
Get that goof Patterson going and they'll be good.
Who's he?
Going where? to which team?

Losing Lindholm and zadorov makes them worse
People think that but before we got those 2 players our team was winning and already doing well.

Keeping Greedy Petey makes them worse. Necas would have been a better signing. (trade)

@@thatstoomuchman88 Not wrong
We talking regular season better or playoffs better?
Both I would think
whether Canucks better or worse, other teams will prepare better to play Canucks
Maybe but maybe not, many people are still underestimating the Canucks. IMHO they are a top ten team in the NHL but they don't make many people's top ten list. People still like to bash the Canucks and that leads to taking them lightly.
Bullseye. Last year, every team took Vancouver lightly because they were a joke the year before.
The Canucks caught lightning in a bottle last year. That's not happening again. Teams will prepare more seriously for them.

Moneypuck, as long as they win games.
Of course they are better. They have more grit and scoring. Get real Farhan
In what world is a team better with DeBrusk and Desharnais instead of Lindholm and Zadorov? The only thing that might make the team better now is Demko being healthy.
Zadorov was a bottom pairing inconsistent bottom pairing guy and Lindholm sucked. 13 playoff games don't change that. Nucks are a much deeper and all around better team.
They will also be able to add a big piece with over 3.5 million cap at the deadline.
Everyone always seems to count these guys out but they won their division and almost made the conference finals without Demko or a healthy EP.
Canucks games in the early season without those 2 players were better than trying to fit them in during the back half.
The world we live in. We added other pieces too. Canucks are most likely better but we're going to have to see to know for sure (either way).
