  • We snagged an incredible Moab boondocking spot, but it was hard to enjoy without our favorite companion. This was our loneliest day (and night!) without Trinity as we await word from what is supposed to be a routine surgery and try to distract ourselves during the process!

Trinity (Talking to another homeless dog at a park): Humans are saps. So easy. You get this good, clean water, bathing, butt cleaning, poop scooping, clothing, petting, treats, medical care, tooth care, barking and growling privileges, free travel, sex without puppies, you are loving large. You are the best fur baby parents. I always say we don't pick them but
they pick us. Like my hubby liked this little Chihuahua at the humane society.
He was holding her and then I took her, but she wanted nothing to do with me
and jumped back into my hubby's arms! At first I felt so bad but we ended up
adopting her and it's now 13 months later and she fits in so well. She is the
smartest little dog and she came already potty trained to use a doggie
pee pad by our back door if were not up early. Which I found amazing since
our last 3 boys (Bichon Frise's) trashed our last house and we had to
completely put in new flooring. As much as I loved my 3 Bichon's I will never
have another male dog ever. Hannah also recalls instantly as I trained her to
come lickity split when I blow this particular whistle (It sounds like a British
    police whistle).

Poor Trinity. That undiagnosed uterine infection was probably the reason she was dumped because it would have made her an unsuccessful breeder. Pyometra in dogs can be a death sentence. My cat had pyometra. Even if they appear healthy it can long term affect the kidneys. My sweetheart lived to eighteen, however. Anyway, be sure to keep an eye on her kidney function. You maybe should ask a vet about putting her on a special kidney diet food rather than regular, or how to adjust her diet to help maintain her kidneys. You are all so lucky to have each other.

Glad Trin is doing well. Since she had an ovary infection she likely couldn't breed and was left, so sadly she was likely tossed out, so glad she met you guys. I grew up with dogs, had a dog my entire life until recently, I always think it is so cute to see people with their first dog it is like the first child and you guys are adorable with her. Our 16 year old passed in November and 19 year old passed in January. But our neighbors dog is always over here and is so sweet, it has been OK. Glad you are checking what you can take to Alaska with you, I would have tossed a couple bags of dog food in and not even thought about it, they never worried about that before. Basically all the boondock spots within 10-15 miles of Moab have disappeared in the last 10-15 years. Used to be soooooo many spots, that are all pay to camp spots now… sad, but it’s what happens when a place blows up

Glad Trinity's spay day went well! Our Rusty goes for grooming every 6 weeks. I drop him off early in the morning then go home to clean, I'm usually done in 3 hours and then I'm ready for him to come home. My husband has retired so the cleaning now takes less time, so we're both ready to get him home in two hours now! It's crazy just how quiet it is without them! These pups work their way into our hearts and become such comfort to us. Also, had not heard about the pet food limit.

That was a sweet video! There is a completeness a dog gives a home and when they’re not there is when it’s definitely felt. I feel like I always say this but I just want to thank you again for giving Trinity such a great home with two actively involved special humans who take such sweet care of her.
My little Maltese was bit by a dog who jumped the fence and he became reactive to other dogs. With work, it has greatly improved. I don’t condone using shock collars ever. But there is a little handheld unit I got off Amazon that emits either a beep or a sound wave only dogs hear that made a huge difference for us. I actually ordered it to use if the attack dog ever did that again but started using the beep sound to train with and I can’t give any greater praise. I’ve actually never used the high pitch sound wave option. If he’s starting to bark at other dogs thru the front door all it takes is showing him or saying we’re getting what we call “the beeper.” Cost around $35. I take it on every walk and everywhere we go. Just a thought.
Good luck on your journey to Alaska. If it’s anything like Hawaii , it’s a little complicated but once you’ve done it, you’ll be pros. Safe travels!

Some CVI are only good for 2 weeks prior to entering that state. I used to work at a vet clinic and some owners wanted to be proactive and do it months ahead of travel time but the certificate would expire and they would have to do another one closer to travel day. The longest paperwork is to Hawaii, definitely start months in advance for that one.

The main reason for the certificate is to certify that your pet is free of any diseases or parasites. So that is why a certificate that is older than 2 weeks prior to entering the state is not accepted. Once in the state you should be fine to stay as long as you want but when coming back to the lower 48 you will most likely need a new certificate. Check the state's USDA guidelines some are easy and explain everything others you need to call them to get the information.

It is amazing what you did for Trinity. It touched my heart so much I wanted to reach out and if you are interested, I would gladly love to help if you guys need some help with dog training! I am not a certified trainer but I do have a Service Dog and we went through 2 years of training so I think I learned a lot…..lol. 🐾❤️

Appreciate the offer. At the moment we're very much wrapped up in keeping our heads above water that we're just working on some of the basics with her. Any advice on getting her to come every time when called would be great.
We currently use boiled chicken (her kryptonite) outside and it works until she gets distracted...and then there is no getting her back on track generally. -J

@@OpenRoading Hi! I know exactly what you mean dog training can be very demanding especially when you are so busy. So to start out with just come up with an easy mark and reward system for her to make communication with her easier. For instance, you want her to sit: what you would do is give the command and as soon as she completes the command say “yes”, so she knows she did the command correctly then reward her with her favorite snack. Make it a party for her and she will learn if I listen, I get rewarded. Over time you can phase out the rewards if you want but it is up to you. This principle you can use with any command. An important thing is do frequent short training sessions to start maybe 15 minutes at a time. You want them to stay engaged with you the whole time so if you make your sessions too long she will lose interest. With that, try to make yourself more valuable to her than the environment. You want to be the most valuable thing to her and in return she will learn all the good things come from you. It would be a good idea to teach her a “place” command especially since you are on the road. For this you can use a bed, blanket, mat or whatever you have. You can teach her to stay in her “place” until released. This is really helpful for when you are setting up or you just need her to stay in one place where you know she is at. Start by showing her the place, walk her over to it and when she gets on the bed and sits or lays down mark it by saying yes and reward her. Always reward in the position she is supposed to be in. When she tries to get off the bed just tell her no, walk her back to the bed, and tell her place again. It is just a lot of reputations and practice.
      For her recall:
Get a long lead, to practice with. This does take time but she will get there. It is literally just letting her get a little bit away from you then tell her come and give the leash a little pop if she doesn’t come, not to hurt her but it is too break up their fixation and bring there focus back to you. When she comes back again, make it a big party for her with lots of rewards. Each day you can go a little further and further. I personally always have her favorite treats with me. Once she gets better at it you can take her to places with more distractions and train around distractions too. Try to start this command with as little distractions as possible then build it up to more distractions that to solidify her come. I don’t know if you know this but Lowe’s and Home Depot allow you to bring your dogs into the store as long as they are behaved so when Xena was younger we used to train in there as well. I also use good so she knows she is on the right track and no when she is just totally lost. Kind of like hot cold I guess….lol.
I have so much more I could tell you but I will write a book….lol. I hope that helps a little but if you need anything I will leave you my e-mail and then we can talk a little bit more. I am afraid to leave my phone number on here for the public but I would give it to you to stay in touch if you want!

@@kristenpoe4967 Thanks so much for this. We are doing most of this but I think our biggest fault is we aren't doing consistent training sessions every day. She does really well with
      "sit,"
"boop" (having her boop our hand)
      "shake"
But "come" is impossible once she is remotely distracted. It's like she will behave once she wants to behave outside. We should probably be doing a lot more with her inside. -J

We have grocery stores and pet stores up here in Canada.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  หลายเดือนก่อน

haha! Yes, we are aware. 😁 There are two reasons we are stocking up:
1 - Specific brands. There are certain things we don't want to switch brands for. Unfortunately pet food is one of them so we'll just have to hope that what's up there is the same. Something we are aware of is in different countries sometimes teriffs and laws mean a brand product that looks the same isn't actually the same (chocolate for instance - A reese in Canada isn't the same as a reese's in the states because Canada has specific chocolate import laws that the US does not.)
2 - Cost. I understand we have to calculate for the exchange rate - but as we travel we will be spending most of our time in rural areas...rural almost always means more expensive. We run a pretty tight budget so we try to save where we can. 🙂 -J

The deal is that "full service" vets have to justify their premium prices over the "low cost S/N clinics" that are usually around. (the same vet may well do both - they cater to different crowds) You get "observation" and likely a whole bunch of pre-loaded syringes of liquid medication.
Low cost clinic you pick up at 5pm, and they either give you pills or just tell you to call if she has issues.
That and $150 are the main differences . :)

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  หลายเดือนก่อน

This vet was super reasonable on the price - Buuuuuuuuuut......We never once spoke to the vet. I don't think I would ever consider going back. I don't know if someone was even there overnight. I think the only reason they told us of the infection was because they charged more. 👀
Could be the best vet in the world...I just don't know because I never met him or her. -J
