Dang, for as solid as the romance between Lady and Tramp is, it's tragic that the most remembered part of this movie
Is the racist Siamese cats song.

One thing that I love about Tramp is how respectful he is of Lady's judgement. After he shows her his own idea of a good time, she says that she would prefer to help 'take care of the baby.' Tramp immediately approves of this, 'you win, I'll walk you home.' He's not upset, he doesn't argue, he simply decides that she knows whats best for herself.

    • @MissChibiGodd

WRONG, on the way home, he tricks her into chasing chickens to stall the walk home, you can see his facial expression change when he sees the chickens and figuring a way to keep her longer or hopefully change her mind into being cut lose and collar free.

@@MissChibiGodd I didn't see that as tricking her though because the way he brought it up just seems so natural. Like he genuinely wanted to chase chickens with her simply because he knew they wouldn't have a day out like this again

It might also be one of Disney's most mature movies. Replace the dogs with humans and you end up with the story of a sheltered young lady from good upbringing falling in love with some tramp, ending up in prison after he has stolen her innocence, being offered a marriage to some nobleman to protect her dignity (which she rejects) and finally finding happiness in live after the Tramp has managed to earn the approval of her family.

I wish Disney would make more animal movies. It seems like they are able to get away with telling deeper more adult stories with animals then they would with human characters. Like social tensions in Zootopia and romantic relationships in Lady and the Tramp. I mean could you see Rapunzel confront Flynn about sleeping with other girls? That would never happen in a human story but Lady and the Tramp can get away with things like that and it makes the story better for it.

A movie about a young boy who's uncle abused him, murdered his father, and then blamed him for it before sending a gang to chase him into exile. The boy then falls into the care of a pair of nihilistic hedonists who try to make him forget about his past, ultimately causing him to hate himself even more as he gets older. Also the closest thing Disney's ever come to an on-screen sex scene.
Yeah, movies are better when they use animals instead of humans.

paulaaquino Yeah they literally show mufasas dead body and he doesn't get revived the next second. They could never do that with human characters.

I just noticed that the ANIMALS of Disney have more realistic romantic relationships than the humans do.
Simba and Nala were childhood friends and betrothed
Pongo and Perdy are happily married with children and are equals in saving and protecting their kids
And Lady and the Tramp dated
    There was no "instalove".
Maybe attraction at first sight (in Pongo's case), but no true love at first sight.

One thing that went way over my head all these years was the fact that Tramp hated the idea of babies but came to the rescue of one because Lady valued family and loyalty. The deeper he fell in love with her, the more he chose to respect her values and responsibilities. This movie ties with the first 7 minute opening of Up as romantic.

  • @crystalfairy912
    @crystalfairy912 6 ปีที่แล้ว +145

Another thing I love about Lady and the Tramp is that scene where Lady asks "Who will watch over the baby?" Too often, particularly today, the woman's choice in her life is seen as wrong if it doesn't include the man who loves her. They make the woman sacrifice her goals so she can be with that man. But in this, Tramp says "You win" and takes her home. Sure he's upset that she doesn't want to be out in the world with him, but he respects her decision and helps her get what she wants. That's pretty darn incredible. And this was out in the 50s!

So, Tramp's lessons from Lady are similar to Chandler's lessons from Monica. Both hate compromise, but they end up finding the person that makes them want to be compromised. Of course, they're different characters, but it seems that, in the end, the lesson they learn is somewhat similar :)

I’ve been a fan of pop culture and film analysis since the Nostalgia critic first appeared on TH-cam. However, for all his insight, he is rarely ever classroom appropriate, and more often then not, he goes through a whole movie before saying anything insightful. You ladies bring both a critical eye and class to your videos, and you provide insight throughout your video and don’t rehash the whole plot of a film. You have learned much from your predecessors. No offense to NC. I’ll always be a fan. His humor always hits more than it misses. But it’s your work that is far better positioned to both entertain and help young minds grow. Gotta go rewatch Lady and the Tramp now. Bye!

Also, I always thought that Lady and the Tramp was the best Disney love story, because unlike most of the other Disney princess-centered love stories, lady and tramp don't have external obstacles (for example a big villain that wants to take over the world) but their relationship itself is the one that needs to grow, understanding and accepting each other's traits and eventually realizing that they change each other for the better!🐶🐕

I found it interesting how Lady and the Tramp and Duchess and O'Malley shared parallels to each other.
The key moment to me that emphasizes this is the parallels between Duchess and O'Malley on the roof in the evening and Lady and the Tramp at the park in the morning.
During their convoversations, Thomas and Tramp talk about living their life of freedom and not being domesticated. They even try to give that perspective to Duchess and Lady as they invite them to stay with them in the outside world. They talk about how the owners will just leave them if it came down to it.
Lady and Duchess however counterpart that arguement where they talk about how their families are loving owners, which is true. They both have an immense loyalty to their owners to where the owners need them emotionally as well.
Thomas and Tramp both in the end sacrifice their life of unhinged freedom out in the streets for their loved ones. Both settling down and having their own families to look after now with Tramp and Lady getting together and having children and O Malley getting together with Duchess and becoming the father to her children.

  • @projectlovenote

But the point of beauty and the beast was that it took time? They quite literally talk about it taking time in the movie and they don’t fall in love right away. They spend time showing each other new things and hanging out. I.e. the library scene, the dinners together, reading by the fire, playing in the snow etc...
Yes it’s mostly a montage, but that’s because for quite some before there is conflict as he is well, a beast!
Unlike other Disney princess movies where there tends to be an immediate attraction, even if it’s subtle.

    I’m agree in part
I just want remember that the princess movies like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Tangled are FAIRYTALES
In Fairytales there is no need to represent things in a realistic way, because fairytales speak in an idealized language
This is why are shown people who fall in love at first sight, because it is the IDEA of relationship that matters
It doesn’t matter how long they spent together, what matters is that they fell in love

Lady and the Tramp is one of my favorite Disney movies and one of my favorite movies overall. The reason I love Lady and the Tramp is because it's very romantic. Certain scenes in Lady and the Tramp remind me of six Thomas The Tank Engine stories about being careful, eight Thomas The Tank Engine stories about working together and eight Thomas The Tank Engine stories about behaving well. The stories about being careful are Percy Runs Away (Volume 3), Thomas Breaks The Rules (Volume 4), Henry's Special Coal (Volume 3), The Flying Kipper (Volume 3), Trouble For Thomas (Volume 1) and Toby The Tram Engine (Volume 3). The stories about working together are James In A Mess (Volume 4), Duck Takes Charge (Volume 4), Down The Mine (Volume 5), The Runaway (Volume 5), Better Late Than Never (Volume 5), Tenders And Turntables (Volume 3), Trust Thomas (Volume 6) and Percy And The Signal (Volume 7). The stories about behaving well are Thomas Comes To Breakfast (Volume 3), Pop Goes The Diesel (Volume 5), Diesel's Devious Deed (Volume 5), A Close Shave For Duck (Volume 5), Gordon Takes A Dip (Volume 5), Double Trouble (Volume 4), A Cow On The Line (Volume 4) and Trouble In The Shed (Volume 3).

When Lady and Tramp have that argument after Lady gets back from the pound, I always thought it was because Lady was protecting him, not that she was really jealous. See at the pound, the other dogs talked about how Tramp's weakness was the dames. How he's been with many other girl dogs, but never takes them serious, until maybe one day he finds one that he treasures more than all the others, aka Lady. When he finds this one he will want to shelter and protect her, but this puts him in danger, because when he tries to protect her and grows careless then the "Cossacks" will pick up and take him to the pound and put him to sleep. When the pound dogs list the other girls, Lady's eyes do get big with surprise but its only when they say the stuff about him finding one he needs to protect and it being "curtains" for him when he does that she looks really alarmed (notice right then the music makes this jarring cutoff sound), that's why the dogs' conversation stops at that point. That's the takeaway. Then the argument itself, yes she asks him who all those other girl dogs were, but I think that was just part of her ploy of pretending to be jealous and frightened and angry. Because while she does sound mad, she was only depressed before he showed up, not wrapped up in jealousy. If she was, she wouldn't have said "oh and that reminds me who is" etc. because she wouldn't need any reminder about those other dogs. She also tells him how she doesn't need him to shelter and protect her, that he needn't worry about his old heel and so on. Then she goes into her doghouse crying, but stops and comes to the front when he's out of earshot, putting her head down because she's still saddened that she had to break up with him. Then of course the rat comes, and Lady's attempt to protect Tramp doesn't work, because he sacrifices himself to the pound in saving the baby from the rat, so then it is Lady who has to save him from being put to sleep, by showing her owners and friends what is going on.

She was angry with him, though. She was scared when she was at the pound and she was angry with him for doing that to her, which is understandable. When you're angry about one thing with a person, other things you may usually ignore because they might not really have been that important at the time also comes forward.
I never thought she was trying to protect him, she was trying to get him to leave because she recognised that he was a risk to her and she just used any weapon in her arsenal to do so, which just so happens to include that he was a player.

@@Sigart Lady was shown to be in a tight moral situation; it's hard legitimately when you are a single female in the kind of situation she is in, overshadowed by dominant male-based influences in dog-dom. Her encounter with Peg at the Dog Pound is a powerful symbol of what Lady found lacking in her life up to that point, even though Peg could not tell Lady everything about Tramp's history and so it was only when the rat presented itself that she came to realize Tramp was more than he appeared. Her preceding conflict and anger was therefore legitimate. Regards, Samuel Farris.

another thing that adds up is how casual the way they first meet is. usually, when lovers-to-be meet for the first time there's already some kind of spark, even when the couple doesn't like each other at first you can see that there's some tension and magnetism between them. but the way Lady meets Tramp when drops by her porch is super average, they don't seem to really take much notice of each other at first, which is reflective of how many people didn't know they were meeting the love at their life when they got introduced to them.

A+ analysis once again! This film is so layered like an Americana dress.
Would you ladies do analysis on these classics' underscore? I'd love to watch that.

Such an irony for you to release this video while the hugely popular romantic blockbuster, the last of the expertly crafted Fifty Shades trilogy is released. "Toxic" marriage vs what you say is a "healthy, wholesome" marriage.
I'd love to see a video of you gals ranting on modern mainstream audience and the appeal of cliched, predictable superhero flicks. Also love to see an in depth analysis of Synecdoche New York, which I've been craving for since I subbed back in 2016. Keep up the good work!

This is what people mean when they say romance is dead, today they put very little effort into the romance films and the characters never show any real connection as they use to.

Everything mentioned here is why this movie is my favorite Disney movie. Not only do I love a good romance movie, but I love dogs and I'm a fan of the star crossed lovers relationship. I always loved how he's a poor dog who spends time with many females who's never been in love before actually ends up falling in love with a rich dog. I love the Bella Notte scene along with the actual song, their kiss is just to cute during that scene and they both end up falling in love with each other during that scene. My opinion it's the best Disney movie just love it and never get tired of watching it

Everything was beautifully said in this video. This also highlights the wonderful medium that is animation. Since you can tell stories that you wouldn't be able to tell with live actions, you have to push the limits using animation to your advantage. If they could do anything with a story where humans are the protagonists, they wouldn't want to make a simple love story that could be done with live action, so the story is more grand and adventurous. While with animals, the grandest and most adventurous stories would be them acting like humans.

Ethel and Ernest is another animated movie that presents a very realistic love story. It is basically Raymond Briggs telling the viewers how his parents met, their everyday lives and tutti quanti. It feels real because it is inspired by a real couple. No princesses, no magic, simply the everyday life of a couple from the moment they meet to their deaths. Seriously, you need to check this movie out. It will make you believe in love, again.

The scene where tramp is selling the muzzle to the beaver, Lady finishes the pitch with "its a free sample" and you can see his exprrssion when she does. She picked up where he left off and worked with him. And he appreciated it. That small touch is exactly what would make a man fall for a women. Partners in crime without even trying to be.

Great comment! I love that moment too and wonder why it doesn't get mentioned often. I think she earned his respect as someone who can stand up for herself as well. She is both someone he wants to shelter and protect and someone he admires just like in most healthy relationships ,that's what the partners are to each other.

I've easily seen this over 100 times and completely forgot about it. I watched this over and over on vhs when I was like 4 or 5. All these scenes are nostalgic; the two siamese cats, the pound, the collar, that spaghetti scene, even the shot of her through the hole in the paper.... like, this is a real throwback to my childhood (me sitting on the floor in front of the tv, watching Disney movies), but also reminds me of my perspective when seeing those thing. For example, my aunt had the squared table cloth at her house and always had breadsticks and I always asked for one because it reminded me of this movie.... I mean, she's been gone since I was 4, so that makes this almost 30 years ago. My mom always watched this with me too.... It's definitely a great memory and I'm glad you guys brought this up.

Lady and the Tramp is one of my favorite Disney movies and one of my favorite movies overall.

I looove the way the dog characters are animated! They have big expressive eyes and very human facial expressions but they move very doglike. Same with the cats, every time I see them I recognize the way they move in my own cat. Does anyone know if they rotoscoped the animals?

I appreciate how affirming this video is. It addresses what the movie does well, and acknowledges that it's flawed, but is still valuable. I feel that movie reviews and analyses tend to be very negative or overly appraising. There's something about the way this argument is presented that doesn't feel blindly positive, as can happen with Disney films people are nostalgic about. Also, many film analyses tend to focus on what a film does wrong, and how to do better, whereas this focuses on how the film is successful, and what lessons we can take away from that. I also appreciated this about your Cinderella video. I guess, in short, thanks for making me think without vilifying one of my favorite childhood movies!
