This has largely been my experience with music. I use the default "I listen to everything" because it's easier than explaining what I like to people most of the time because there's such a stigma around lots of music. A guy went off on a tangent about how the artist Voltaire looked "really gay" because he saw a CD in my car, and basically surmised that the music must, of course, be bad. On the whole, all my conversations about music have basically been negative except for a tiny handful of instances.
My problem comes with people who are so opinionated and, as idubbz said "obnoxiously passionate" about the music they personally like. I actually love talking about music with people who are open minded about it because I've dabbled in most genres of music and I have certain artists that I'm fond of in each of them but I usually stick to a few genres, namely EDM and rock/oldschool rock/punk rock and what I call "atmospheric" instrumentals. The conversations/people I hate discussing with are the ones who are judgmental over your music taste. Like I'm sure everyone's experienced the conversation where you say you like X niche genre or style of music or something like that and the other person kinda changes the expression on their face giving you a "huhh? you like THAT stuff?" look and it just sours the whole conversation to the point where you just don't want to talk anymore. Here's one example: I mostly like EDM and rock (my musical mood for now) and when I've tried mentioning that there's some J-pop/J-rock I like people will give me that look of "why though?" and I've even had people ask in a really insulting tone "Why do you listen to Japanese music/music in another language if you don't speak that language? You can't understand what they're saying." And then I'd have to go into a long-winded explanation that I like the way the language sounds melodically in music and singing and that I don't feel the need to know what they're so long as I know the sentiment the song is overall about. TLDR: Obnoxiously opinionated people ruin music discussions when IMO they are actually a lot of fun to have with people who are open minded and don't judge you for your musical tastes.
I recently went on a date with a girl, and instead of asking what music I listen to in the car, she took my phone and just went through my music herself, asking about bands she didn’t know and choosing songs to play snippets of. It was honestly a really good conversation starter.
That’s cool. That’s a lot like when I met my girlfriend of 7 years (now fiancée) where she got me to put on some music and when I was away she dug deep and discovered albums and related bands to listen to later and put them on her phone to listen to on long drives. She got me into some cool new music as well.
Totally in the same boat, bro. The music I listen to runs deep with me, and I really have to let my guard down to share about it. I've had a few of those amazing moments where people connected with my musical tastes, and it's life changing - you feel like someone finally gets you. I hope you find someone who connects with your tastes in that way!
Exactly, the main reason people ask that question is only cuz they wanna talk about it to you lol. It’s like “I got to ask you first for no reason, and since you answered out of politeness, I have to answer too!!”
I watched this and realized I did this shit sometimes. It's like when you watch a comedy show on TV and realize you are a tad bit like what they are making fun of. Like if a boss watched the office, or an insane person watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Rainbowforce5 Probably cuz it’s more relatable to you lol, like in the other guys comment I find myself laughing the most at the characters Im most similar to (in their negative aspects)
As an actual musician I've realised over the years how to tell if someone doesn't wanna talk about it and won't press after the fact, but I'm pretty uninteresting aside from music so it's an easy fall back, and only ever from a place of "im really interested in this thing and peoples reasoning for liking similar things". Sometimes it ends up being a networking thing depending on the setting but that's rare obviously. A lot of non-artists probably find themselves in a similar boat where they genuinely have nothing else going on in their life and feel like going to music festivals is a personality trait
Funnily enough, my uncle was one of those "all other music is trash" kind of guys, because he was super into underground punk. Like, any other music was trash to him because "oh they sold out" "oh rise against? Yeah they used to be good, till they signed and sold out. Anti flag? Trash now that they signed with a record company"
Those types are so damn obnoxious, I hate talking about music with those types of people. I never understood the "this band sold out so I can no longer listen to their music" perspective. I just listen to music regardless. I just separate the art from the artist.
Those kinds of people are extremely annoying. It's even worse when they think anything that isn't old ass, poorly made black or death metal is trash. Like, yeah sure. That one metalcore or melodeath band with a cleaner production sound is absolutely terrible compared to your literal white noise low production, half-baked artists who think a jet engine that's about to blow up is a good sound. "You don't understand the music" my ass.
the worst situation is when both parties share one artist they like in common and the other knows everything about them and you can't answer the questions
Besides just listening to music, sharing my favorite music with others and having them like it is a great feeling. IMO it's worth the risk of a little embarrassment.
@SunOnShine I think we should correct the police instead of just defunding them. They need more training, and more experience in stress situations, as well as more evaluation.
@SomeRandomHuman How is it a fact that anything matters at all? Things matters to some people, to some they don't - that's kind of the deal with opinions. Is there scientists telling us that things do in fact matter, that we matter at all? A scientific fact that anything that holds life holds value? Is it God who has decided it? Or do you get to decide what things have value and what things do not - as fact? NOT saying that they don't matter by the way. They matter to me, they have value to me. But it's not proven for anyone. How do we prove that anything has value? How would you react if I said "bacterial lives matter" and that "it is a fact", so "you have to treat bacteria in a way that I consider respectful"? To a nihilist we all matter as little as they think bacteria matters. I'd love to prove them wrong, but I can't.
On a serious note, I actually really relate to this video. My dad owned a record store growing up and he is really judgmental about music saying that all new music is trash. It gave me such anxiety to open up about what music I like to the point where no one knows that about me.
Viral Serpent yo listen to nujabes if you’re into lofi, listen to teebs if you’re into electronic beats, and listen to Thundercat if you haven’t his bass smacks
I absolutely hate playing music publicly because I was so scared of judgement, to a point where I was listening to others people music. There was a point where I didn't know what my music taste was and I didn't know if I liked that specific genre myself or I liked it because other people did. Bruh I just realised everything I said makes no sense, oh well
That's why I sometimes like to listen to the radio from time to time. They literally play the same shit they did a decade ago so it kind of feels nostalgic
My problem is that I usually don't know what genres the Songs I listen to belong to, so I literally can't answer the question what kind of music I like. I hate that question.
yo as you listen to your playlist google the artist. it'll tell you what they belong to. also, theres a site "every noise .com" which is pretty decent for it, provided you learn your way around the site.

"What's your favourite...?" Translation: "Do we like the same things? Is there anything we can agree on, otherwise I can't stand it and can't talk about it"

I listen mostly metal music and I meet "true friends" (at least in Central Europe) all the time. Metalheads are in my experience very nice and friendly people.
I'm always listening to "what's new" or recommend for me on Spotify. It's always changing and usually artists I haven't heard before so I'd have no idea how to answer this question. When I was a teenager I'd find a new band and listen to all their albums all the way through, but I really couldn't care less as an adult.
@Martin Green he’s right though, the conversation only goes one of two ways: if you share the same taste of music, great. If you don’t, you then spend the next minute awkwardly trying to name artists until you find common ground while they pretend to care. Comparing it to a dream is pretty accurate because if a person hasn’t shared your dream it’s just white noise trying to explain it to them
@The-Man-Who-Chortles Do you want him to have another gf instead? Why do you care ? Do you want him to leave his gf just for his fanbase? Please go watch ricegum maybe he'll be relevant one day.
@The-Man-Who-Chortles look when you click on a video you do it to entertain yourself. The personality or the opinions of the person i watch doesn't hurt me at any cost . if you are a hater don't comment. That's it
It feels rly personal for me to like play my playlists for other people. It always feels embarrassing when people make fun of some song. But when people vibe with it it's so satisfying.
he actually has a legit point though, too many people get their fallopian tubes and their testicles in a twist if someone likes music that someone else dislikes

It's three B's: Booty, bitches, and bikes.
Bald: edups (cancer variant)
I recently went on a date with a girl, and instead of asking what music I listen to in the car, she took my phone and just went through my music herself, asking about bands she didn’t know and choosing songs to play snippets of. It was honestly a really good conversation starter.
That’s cool. That’s a lot like when I met my girlfriend of 7 years (now fiancée) where she got me to put on some music and when I was away she dug deep and discovered albums and related bands to listen to later and put them on her phone to listen to on long drives. She got me into some cool new music as well.

Perhaps a shortened, more centralised version of the mustache would be cool?
Yes, maybe he should try getting a degree in art as well
Also his material should be a bit more loud and direct, with more passion, like a leader of a nation giving a speech.
brush/hitler moustache
Maybe write a book about his struggle through these trying times.
Maybe try his hand in politics
“What type of music do you like” seems like the opening of a superiority contest to me
Banana Hater I feel like people with this ideology are crippled with anxiety, it's a normal conversation
Reminds me of "I was born in the wrong generation"
If the person asking says they like jazz, you’ve already lost in their eyes.
only if you're so conceded that you cant tell other people your actual opinons without fear of rejection ...
Because it is , I do it all the time
Totally in the same boat, bro. The music I listen to runs deep with me, and I really have to let my guard down to share about it. I've had a few of those amazing moments where people connected with my musical tastes, and it's life changing - you feel like someone finally gets you. I hope you find someone who connects with your tastes in that way!
"now that I asked you about your taste in music, I now have a reason to talk about how special and diverse my music taste is".
Worm I'm insane and I think it's always sunny if funny.
Rainbowforce5
Probably cuz it’s more relatable to you lol, like in the other guys comment I find myself laughing the most at the characters Im most similar to (in their negative aspects)
I love how he uses uncomfortable corn-eating imagery to convey how painful he finds getting asked about music.

Yeah that goes for almost every opinion im exposed to.
