Well, here we are, Iowa Caucus day 2024. Considering we all took several points of permanent sanity damage this time 4 years ago, what’s insane this year is how on rails this whole thing is. Nonetheless, our elections correspondent Josh (@ettingermentum) returns to update us on the state of the races for 2024. We look at how Biden’s long-term hyper-commitment to Israel affects his chances, Trump’s advantages and disadvantages in his ‘24 campaign, the RFK Jr. of it all, and the race for #2 between the rest of the GOP candidates..

remember in 2020 when will matt and felix (and he who cannot be mentioned) all were smugly saying that if the dems needed the left to win and that defeating trump was a moral obligation, that they needed to vote for bernie
then that turned out to be completely untrue, biden won anyway, and bernie supported him which surprised them despite nearly a half a century of bernie's willingness to get a single thing done as a politician

Does Trump like Broadway or does he just like Andrew Lloyd Webber? His big thing is for people to be impressed with him and going to a Webber musical is a show of status, certainly more than, say, Avenue Q or Rent, which I'll guarantee you he hasn't seen. The only other Broadway show I can think of him seeing was Will Rodgers Follies, but only because Marla Maples was in it.

They’re explaining why we’re losing. Something most Beltway pundits have thus far failed to do.
I want Biden to win, for personal reasons, but something tells me he won’t and probably shouldn’t. He started off good, getting us out of Afghanistan, putting all that money into infrastructure, and putting a stop to Trump’s crueler immigration policies.
But then the likes of Joe Manchin and Kristin Sinema came along and reminded us of how corrupt and unimaginative the mainstream DINOs are, and how true change is impossible so long as they’ve got the reigns. And then Gaza happened and reminded us that the old military-industrial complex is also still in charge.
Be honest….even if Biden does win, do you really believe, with the smidgen of political capital he has left, with the divided Congress he has to work with, that he will be able to accomplish anymore in his second term than he already has in his first? I’d like to believe so, but history tells me different.
This disaster is GOING to happen, whether in 1 year or four, it makes no difference. The 6th Party System is coming to end, and that transition will be ugly and brutal and who knows what the country will look like after.
My only hope is that like other past disasters it will force a reckoning within the American political system that will change us for the better.
But to find the light, sometimes you first have to travel through darkness.

The ability for the American public to have any control over American foreign policy electorally is almost non-existent. The "deep-state" does exist, just not in the way conspiracy theorists talk about. If we accept the United States as an Empire, as Imperialist, then of course the military-industrial complex, the administrative bureaucracy, the donor and patronage networks, the policy think-tanks, etc, all form a "superstructure" to perpetuate that Empire. This superstructure is not a formal conspiracy, but consists of entire local economies, countless jobs and careers, and countless money and capital. You can elect someone to the Executive position, but the president alone can't overwrite the programming of this entire structure, and especially one not backed up by a counter-hegemonic, well organised, disciplined, mass movement. In fact, the incentive structures of politics are incredibly effective at cultivating and propagating the kinds of politicians who *would* do nothing to prevent a key US ally from committing a genocide.
The point is, when Americans talk about US foreign policy, they often talk as if they have a say in it. However I think you'd be hard-pressed to prove to me how the average American, through their extremely contrived and limited means of exercising democratic input into US governance, have more say over their government's foreign policy than the average Chinese citizen does, with their own extremely contrived means of input through either membership of the CCP or through localised civic electoral participation.
Vote, or don't vote. But if we consider ourselves socialists, maybe we should also consider that the US state, as it currently exists, is our enemy and the enemy, really, of the entire human race and its future. We are not "members" of the state, we are subjects of it. Just as the people of Gaza are subjects of US hegemony.
Of course we channel our political frustrations with how things are through voting for one or the other parties, because they are the only game in town. And to not vote might as well be to do nothing, as there is no alternative we can look to. But we have to build that alternative. And it will take a long time. Longer than any of these election cycles.
