I ride an ex-racer too, and she's wonderful! She tends to speed around the arena especially while jumping, but that's what she was trained to do to begin with. Being calm and rewarding your horse will make the experience more enjoyable- and that's what you did here- Fabulous!
She seems to really love eventing:) I think she would have made a hell of a steeplechaser! Thanks, she is a blast:) Never an easy ride, but definitely never a dull moment!
OTTB's are wonderful horses!! I've had Sunny since she was 5, and she'll be 11 this year. OTTB's are incredibly smart and athletic and will try their hearts out for you though! I had Sunny for just a winter before we started eventing at the beginner levels. The biggest thing to overcome for a lot of OTTB's is relaxation after the amped up track life. That can be difficult for some, but nothing compares to their heart and how hard they'll try for you! I would definitely recommend them:)
Sunny definitely used to rush a lot, she has gotten lots better though, it just takes a lot of times for some! Don't be afraid to take it slow, one day it will click and that hard work will pay off:)
Awh Sunny looks like she loves jumping! Just look at her ears! And she's tossing her head like, "please let me rush the jumps! Pretty please?!" XD She looks like fun.
That's awesome!! I love OTTB's, Sunny is definitely more on the crazy chestnut mare side of things, but I have a big gelding who is the polar opposite, super laid back and chill about everything:) Your guys looks super cute! Good luck with him:)
I have an OTTB too! he's coming up for 12 at the end of this month and he's absolutely fab! i've only had him 3months but you wouldn't think he was an ex-racer at all! he's so calm and docile! i'm hoping to affiliate him this year :) he's got a super jump on him! he just gets a little nervous in warm up arenas if he's not been out in a while but nothing phases him really! p.s Sunny is beautiful and has a nice pop on her by the looks of it haha! :)
Wow, looking over her ears makes me think of riding my Finn :) I love OTTB's! My trainers save ex-racers from auction and turn them into hunters and jumpers, and Finn was one of the ones they trained. On a good day I can point him towards any jump and he'll leap over with flying colors, no issues. On a bad day, I hit him with my crop and it turns into a good day :) When I get my own horse, I will totally get an OTTB :D
I found that the best way to "rehab" a rusher is to lower the fences and start over. They often rush when they are stressed and feeling over-faced. Just start lower, at a trot even, and gradually raise the jumps. Anytime the horse starts to rush again, then lower the fences. Also, check yourself and make sure that you are not tightening up in anticipation, which increases the horse's anxiety and makes them rush. Trot the jumps on a very loose rein and then introduce cantering a single jump.
She used to race, and gets really excited when she's running or jumping. She's always tossed her head around like that, and probably always will, haha. I think we placed 5th or 6th if I remember correctly:)
This is really cool! Nice round! Does your mare rush to the jump? Because mine used to do it (Fortunately she doesn't do it anymore, we solved the problem), and watching this made me feel like it was my mare ahah!
Usually my mare is a lot more excited during our rounds, and likes to take the long spot, so I was asking her to wait and get deeper and she was listening really well actually, haha. We had one rail, fence 3 I think it was.
Good luck. Just really concentrate on keeping the reins loose. It is very easy to anticipate rushing, and "tighten up". However, that makes the horse anticipate and rush--it is a vicious circle. Ride long and low and calmy and introduce new jumps and higher jumps slowly. If she starts rushing again, that means she is anxious, so back up a step. Best wishes.
@albertaeventer That would definitely make a difference. Haha. I've always wanted to try show jumping, but never got the chance to. I use to play around with my horse and do free jumps, but that's it. It looks like fun.
What was your first ever competition with Sunny was it eventing, or showjumping or a dressage competition?? or did you just go straight into eventing?? when did you feel she was ready for eventing
haha, thats what I did. I have a chair that kinda rocks so i rock in a canter movment and kind go up in a wierd 2 point. For some reason its a good workout and helps me with counting strides
My horse is an OTTB and she also tosses her head around a lot. Its like she is having so much fun she just wants to go! And I am saying no, no, wait, wait so she fights me ;) Funny that you say you have problems with straightness, because I have the same problem. It is good to practice jumping at and angle anyway because lets face it, we don't always come in straight! ;)
Claire Heazlewood Practice! We practice a ton of courses in jumping lessons so when we go to an event it’s a skill you’ve practiced a lot. And figured out what works for you, and tracing the pattern with your finger, seeing it ridden, saying it out loud, everyone is different and it’s not an easy thing for a lot of people! 😊 Plus you get to walk it several times and the jumps are numbered which helps.
does she rush at fences alot? because the mare that i ride is an OTTB and she gets really exited and almost gallops to the fence, then she realises shes going too fast and refuses.
She's a super hot, opinionated, fussy mare. She's always tossed her head around, to one degree or another. She's not an easy ride by any means, with Sunny it's more about managing her, not forcing her to do anything. Force definitely does not work with her, but over time, we've found what *does* work best for her! Thanks for your concern:)
my horse flips his head, bucks, pops shots at me and bolts. hes an off track thoroughbred racer. He's grey and 18Hands, line a jump up in front of him and hes perfect little angel. anything else hes nuts.. litterally
@freecklesnboo303 The one "drift" coming into the double combination was actually me momentarily forgetting where to go, lol. ;) I'm lucky though, if I can get her lined up, she'll jump it:)
@RenoBabyboy We always walk it on foot beforehand, plus it's the same for everyone else, so after watching it 50 times it kind of gets burned into your brain, haha:)
Il a le head shaking ce petit cheval? Le mien est atteint, c'est pour ça que je me permet, j'en voit les symptômes, mais si il ne fais ça qu'occasionellement il ne faut pas s'affoler ;-)
Straightness has always been hard for her, she's always really wiggly when I ride her. It's the one thing we have been working on a ton and probably always will!
This is so cool!!!!❤ I have been watching this vid sense I started riding!😢 I can’t believe it’s been 11 years😭

Your mare looks so exciting to ride! Great job with her! =)
The Tricia clinic? Awesome! I love it too, definitely one of my faves!
Just there for a clinic :) love Thompson . I can't wait for the event this year ! *

Awesome! It's definitely one of my favorite events for sure, such an awesome facility and course:)
Nice to see such consideration; you compliment your horse and thanked a steward. Well done.
Sunny definitely used to rush a lot, she has gotten lots better though, it just takes a lot of times for some! Don't be afraid to take it slow, one day it will click and that hard work will pay off:)

This is such an awesome video! Really enjoyed it!
That was an amazing horse!
That's awesome!! I love OTTB's, Sunny is definitely more on the crazy chestnut mare side of things, but I have a big gelding who is the polar opposite, super laid back and chill about everything:) Your guys looks super cute! Good luck with him:)
that was awesome brave horse and a good rider! you were talking to you're horse: " good girl" wich i like and the horse probably too! good job!

This is the Pony Club I attend! The grounds are just incredible
Nice round. Thanks for sharing.

OTTB's are awesome!!! :D I definitely want to get another in the future:)
@MoNaZandAED Thank you so much:) She has come such a long was since I first got her!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
At some points I think your gonna run into the side of the jump, But you always manage to straighten your self up like pro. Its GREAT!
She used to race, and gets really excited when she's running or jumping. She's always tossed her head around like that, and probably always will, haha. I think we placed 5th or 6th if I remember correctly:)
I love watching this video it makes me feel like i'm riding her myself.
looks awesome! Nice camera, really good quality :) feels like you get quite deep into the fence? probs me imagining it haha! knock any poles?

your mares cuuuute! good job btw
@LegendMusic757 You definitely saw pencils!! Such a fun idea:)
Wonderful horse.:) How long did it take to train her? I'm interested in buying an OTTB for Show Jumping or Cross Country.:)
Realy nice ride! I cringed on the combination and the lasr fence alittle but you rode like a champ!
Good luck. Just really concentrate on keeping the reins loose. It is very easy to anticipate rushing, and "tighten up". However, that makes the horse anticipate and rush--it is a vicious circle. I got mine at Best Buy, you can find them at lots of the big box stores, and they have lots online as well.
@albertaeventer That would definitely make a difference. Haha. I've always wanted to try show jumping, but never got the chance to. I use to play around with my horse and do free jumps, but that's it. It looks like fun.
How did you place? Awesome round btw
@albertaeventer XD That happens to me a lot too, but I have a pony that is the same way, he can pretty much read my mind when it comes to courses!!
Thanks, haha. Always room for improvement! ;)
Well done!
Thank you:)
The OTTB's are fun hey? They are pretty awesome:)
Awww thank you!! I definitely agree:)
What was your first ever competition with Sunny was it eventing, or showjumping or a dressage competition?? or did you just go straight into eventing?? when did you feel she was ready for eventing
Definitely! Some horses just don't go around all relaxed all the time:) They're individuals, not robots, haha.
How high is that? :p
haha, thats what I did. I have a chair that kinda rocks so i rock in a canter movment and kind go up in a wierd 2 point. For some reason its a good workout and helps me with counting strides

@GoGadgetHookerClean It's definitely one of my favorite events too:)
lol got my sturups and i sat down on a pillow couted off the jumps to!:-)
Willow Pillow I was counting strides the whole time 😂
ok thanks a lot for the advice, im sure that it will help me heaps. :)
I don’t get how you memorise a course! I tried one at my pony club and I forgot after the second jump
Claire Heazlewood Practice! We practice a ton of courses in jumping lessons so when we go to an event it’s a skill you’ve practiced a lot. Very well done, you let her/him go but not to much
Im a TH-camr Sunny is a mare
Her. Sunny is a mare
nearly every equestrian here:
*looks around, and gets into position*
*clicks*
*two points over the jumps*
lol!
Good job

Jeesh, how can you keep the course straight?? I would be lost at which one to go to next. :(
how many jumps
god work :)
my horse flips his head, bucks, pops shots at me and bolts. hes an off track thoroughbred racer. He's grey and 18Hands, line a jump up in front of him and hes perfect little angel. anything else hes nuts.. litterally
Awesome :)
thanks :) ill try that
@LegendMusic757 I've got a pic of it but it won't let me post the link in a comment for some reason:P
@RenoBabyboy Course walks and name the fences is how i remember!

at the end " hoo hoo hoo" lol
yea i liket a lot!!
@TheSupahFly97 Haha that's awesome:)
@theyatemahlaser Thanks! Maybe I could get one, that would be so cool!
@freecklesnboo303 The one "drift" coming into the double combination was actually me momentarily forgetting where to go, lol. ;) I'm lucky though, if I can get her lined up, she'll jump it:)
whats going on with your horse? why is it constantly throwing its head everywhere?
WHERE DO U GET ONE???
@xxbrunaloverxx It's just 3'6"
@RenoBabyboy We always walk it on foot beforehand, plus it's the same for everyone else, so after watching it 50 times it kind of gets burned into your brain, haha:)
Where on earth do u get a helmet cam ????
barrelraces456 you get a GoPro and attach it to your helmet
Bahaha I know right, I say that instead of whoa! Not sure why haha.
I think we ended up 5th or 6th if I remember correctly, haha.
Il a le head shaking ce petit cheval?
Le mien est atteint, c'est pour ça que je me permet, j'en voit les symptômes, mais si il ne fais ça qu'occasionellement il ne faut pas s'affoler ;-)
I have to work really hard to keep her straight, because she likes to drift! Thanks:)
i cant be the only one leaning into two-point every time he goes into a jump.
@kittenqueenmew Haha, good strategy. ;)
Very Good :) (Sorry, i'm french :s)
Straightness has always been hard for her, she's always really wiggly when I ride her. It's the one thing we have been working on a ton and probably always will!
hey hi hello, can I steal your horse? xoxoxoxox
go pro helmet cam. just look up that and it'll take you to the go pro site.
Hy does she like to drift so much?
