    How the adjustment of the Pula's currency basket weights and the expansion of the trading margin will impact Botswana’s economic stability, particularly in relation to its trade with South Africa and other international partners. Do you agree with what Chilo Ketlhwaafetse said? 🤔

    le bua ZERO hela
    There are two implications of a devaluation. First, devaluation makes the country's exports relatively less expensive for foreigners. Second, the devaluation makes foreign products relatively more expensive for domestic consumers, thus discouraging imports.
    you will only make 90% of Batswana lives difficult and make foreigners lives easy.
    atleast if we had a lot of manufactuing/factories for exports and self sustainance but owai we depend on those imports(gov has set us to fail and still is making things worse)

    • @MK-mq6vy
      @MK-mq6vy 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      If the country's exports are less expensive that attracts more foreign customers therefore a rise in export volume, and foreign products being more expensive encourages more spending within the country rather than outside...Additionally this is an opportunity for Batswana to expand into manufacturing products usually found abroad...
      As Batswana we are so quick to point out negatives rather than looking at the opportunities these type of policies present.

      @@harryjoseph7831 they prevented the economy from crushing. Zimbabwe failed to devaluate it's currency leading to a nose dive if the economy. If you know economics very well go check what led to Dr Simba Makoni to resign under the Mugabe regime. They have actually made it easier for you. You are seeing it in laymen's eyes considering short term gains also know that the percentage was quite small it will not affect much on house hold level. Note the statement on the policy implementation said currency will not be the only component that will lead to success of the economy but a number of factors

    Its very concerning that the wrong message is being echoed to the public and international sphere. The PULA has not been devalued. I think the pubic should understand that a currency is either trading pegged/ free floating to its major trading partners. The adjustment of the crawling peg on a 50/50 basis is to equally manage the magnitude at which the currency value relates to its trading partner. The reason why SA accounts for 50% of the peg is because its our major trading partner and our big brother in SACU. Secondly, Botswana has always been an open economy, and the concept of purchasing power parity is wrongly used in this discussion. This adjustment of the peg is nothing new. As a small open economy, the value of the BWP takes cue from the international financial market activity, be it political, economics related etc. SA is an emerging market with higher market liquidity activity coupled with a robust stock market, as such the demand of the ZAR by the international market boosts the strength of the ZAR against its trading partners and the opposite of this sentiment is true. Lastly an Economist is an individual who graduated or has been conferred an Economics degree by an authorized institution of higher learning. Lets not loosely call anyone an Economist if they don't have that academic qualification. Rather call them analysts.

      Instead of trying to produce more to sell more, bone they devalue the currency,

      @thatommopelwa7329 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Not true what u saying my guy. Botswana is not the only country that does this. Most powerful economies strengthen by doing this. Mostly countries that rely mostly on export and imports. Whst udc did is what was making it hard for bdp to come to agreement with debswana. Coz with strong pula we lose markets of diamonds which currently sustains our economy. And bdp wanted to take advantage and force debswana to terms that will benefit them. And batswana were not gonna benefit. With lowred value of Bwp we open more opportunities for trade with other countries in other commodities besides diamonds.

    i think this was just a bad move i dont know maybe i dont understand their reasons, id understand if we were exporting more than we import like bo china. ae kake yare re nale trade balance deficit abo ntse o depreciater currency. As much as this is supposed to encourage domestic production it would make sense if our local produce were of quality. You cant reduce foreign debt by this move whilst your debt isnt in your currency.

      My same sentiments. I was discussing this with someone that our IMPORT BILL is so high and it's been for quite some time so this devaluation makes it more EXPENSIVE for us to buy goods from outside, which in turn forces importers to increase their selling prices, ultimately affecting inflation negatively.
