    I always like Burt's designs. In the early '80's I got to fly a Vari-eze. I wanted one but was deep into a Skybolt build. A friend of mine built a Long eze with O-235 and would fly it non stop from Kansas to sun and fun and arrive with two hours fuel. Impressive.

    These are like the most perfect personal aircraft. Good speed great economy first built in the 70s they were well ahead of their time.

    • @sblack48
      @sblack48 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don Fronterhouse it depends what you want to do. For very efficient point to point travel then yes. But as an overall sport plane they are not versatile. You can’t easily operate off less than a 2500ft paved runway. That cuts you out of hundreds of airports right there. There is hardly any baggage space and most people like side by side seating vs tandem. Not very aerobatic either. The RVs do all those things well and they are faster and easier to build. That’s why there are 1000s of them and very few ezs left.

    • @John-rw9bv
      @John-rw9bv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sblack48 The RVs sure are beautiful planes, personally I would take both, but so far have yet to save up enough for either ;-) but not long before I have to choose. I suppose the longez’s small wing area lowers drag, good for distance, but also means you need really long runways. Can this be overcome with more powerful engines? A Subaru in the same plane could triple the horsepower without going too extreme. Alternatively, can wings be made longer and shorter, for slow speed flying vs long distance mileage? Thanks rv4 guy! :)

    • @jonyap08
      @jonyap08  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeAbignale Per plans, they only have stick in the back, no throttle. I got my first stick time in the back seat of a friend's Longez. With some training, most people have no problems flying this plane. Like any airplane, once you learn the handling of your plane, you become more skilled at flying it. Xwinds were no problem for me.

      @@John-rw9bv Yeah, we didn't finish it, but sold it to a friend who did. We had the air frame finished except for fitting the cowls, so he had to do all the finishing, avionics, engine, etc. I do have a pic of it finished, but alas, it ended up white.
      There was a Vari that flew in the area called Yellow bird. The color is obvious from the name and it looked pretty nice. I think I remember him telling RAF that he was going to paint it that color and them giving him some grief about it, worried about static temps, I guess, but I don't think he had any problems. I might be confusing two stories with the paint gripe situation, but I think I remember that he was an airline pilot from one Fl city that flew into another for his day job, so he used it to commute.
      My father, my/his instructor, and a couple of friends went over to the Cape in the club 172 to do the big circle and watch a Shuttle launch back when you could, early in the program. He said they were clawing for altitude the whole way there and saw an EZ WAYY above them in the pattern (if you could call it that, Dad said it was a MESS). IIRC I think he said it was that bird. It's been a while, and I've eaten and slept since then, so it may have been another EZ / eze.
      There were a few flying out of Orlando, Titusville, etc back then. Not as much anymore, it's been about 18 years since I've seen one fly over the house, and I'm no longer involved so I don't know other than sightings. I know they used to have several parked every time at Sun n Fun, and a BUNCH at Oshkosh, but I've seen only one in the last couple of Sun N Funs I attended. I really do need to get back for at least one more Oshkosh. It was amazing. :-)
      Our friend flew the one we started all over the States and out to the Bahamas a few times and finally sold it when he turned 80, as he figured his reflexes were at the point where he'd better go back to the Lake Buccaneer looking ultralight he used to fly before the Long.
      Cheers. I do miss flying. We quit because I went back to college and Dad had a complicating medical issue come up, and my son still gripes at me about it. At least he got a ride once.

    If fitted with different landing gear could the Long EZ function as a bush plane in Alaska?

    • @w8stral
      @w8stral 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. It is a canard. A bush plane must be able to rotate off its prop wash. A canard layout therefore requires MUCH longer runways and corresponding higher TO velocity. For cruising, canard is superior, but for low speed maneuverability? No.

      Hello Ed, not much luggage room, but enough for 2 people and a long weekend. The luggage goes in the wing strakes, behind the rear passenger in the spar box, and anywhere around the rear passenger. The nose cone contains the battery and nose gear mechanism. Birds? Well, most of the time I am way above the birds at 10,000 feet plus. The fastest I have been in my Longez was 212mph. Most of the time I am cruising at 150 to 170mph so if I did hit a bird.....it would not be fun.
