      I believe we are managers of the reserve called Earth now.
      The population growth that needs to be curbed is (truth be told) that of Homo Sapiens.
      Covid-19, Global Warming and consequent wars are the results of leaving nature to take care of the situation.
      Perhaps, Kevin,
      we are focused on the wrong end of the problem... looking through the wrong end of the telescope.
      If we have qualified ourselves to be rulers of Earth and gods of our planet then we need to consider the responsibilities of self appointed gods.
      At first we would conclude that culling does not stop at impala, it doesn't even stop at lions....
      Then we can come to the realization that if you're a reasoning god of the species that (reasonably) is due for culling then you can reasonably arrive at some rules and regulations that halt and reverse a trend and render culling of that species unnecessary.
      In short,
      the problem is not solvable within the confines of the fenced off reserve.
      The problem is that the reserve is fenced off.
      There are not too many lions or an excess of impala.
      Nevertheless,
      there is an excess of a species and that excess, left to nature, will kill us all --
      eventually.

    "We need to have solutions, rather than have this outrage culture of saying … "stop it! Ban it! Don't do it!" … and then don't offer a solution.
    "
    "It's always been very frustrating to me, to hear someone say "ban something" and then not come up with an alternative."
    "If you can give people an alternative that makes sense - even if they might be seemingly unattainable currently - I think what's incredible is that (once you have this goal, this ability to start aiming for that, reaching for that) you know you're setting off in a right direction."
    "For me, it's about conservation, for me it's about biodiversity and ecology. If you can tell me that this is the right way to go, to protect a system for generations to come then I'm quite open to listening to what you have to say."
    - Kevin Richardson, the Lion Whisperer, 2020 (this is Brainyquote worthy)

      @Brian Anderson did you listen to what was said at all? Your comment is exactly what he is saying is wrong.... and what not to do.... "We need to have solutions, rather than have this outrage culture of saying … "stop it! Ban it! Don't do it!" … and then don't offer a solution.
      " I mean your response is EXACTLY what is being criticized.
      I agree with not being into trophy hunting. This coming from a guy who has grown up hunting his entire life. But i have only ever hunted food items, varmints &/or nuisance animals. Killing a bear or lion doesn't appeal to me. That said, listen to what he was saying. Find a better answer to the problem. The only way to hunt a lion is to get a special permit for a localized area in a specific time; they are only issued when there is a need to cull an overpopulation problem for that sector of land. And the only way to get that permit is to pay thousands of $$$$$$$ which then goes back into the conservation of the animals in that sector. Then, if you want to take the animals carcass back to your home country, you pay even more money to the government to allow you to export it. That doesn't even include the costs that go to the hunting outfit, the guide, the drivers, the spotters... Lots of money is distributed all around.
      So it all comes back down to the issue, when there is a need remove a lion from its area do to overpopulation; there is no one who wants to take it on their land, and there is no one who wants (or just cant afford it) to take it in their animal sanctuary, what do you do? You have to cull the animal so what do you do? Because the only other option right now would be for the conservation agency to pay money out of their pocket to have the animal euthanized. Why not let that rich person who has the money and desire to do it, pay thousands of dollars, which goes right back into the preservation of the other animals, to "hunt" the animal?
      I agree, it sucks to see those pics. But listen to the man, instead of screaming "NO LION HUNTING" and saying just ban it, offer a solution to the problem that is better than what we have now.

    • @Kaikaifilu1994
      @Kaikaifilu1994 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Right, right, and let’s just say that trophy hunters that *claim* to be “for conservation”, like on “Let Africa Live”, or whatever, that I’ve personally come across... aren’t really the nicest people.
      Sure, you can *say* that it works, but let’s look at the moral and ethical flaws:
      1.) “It helps fund anti-poaching patrols”. Poaching is a fuel for demand, and that demand is for animal parts, wether the bones of a tiger or the horns on a rhino. Sure, you can fund more anti-poaching patrols and whatnot, but *that won’t stop* the demand for animal parts on the black market; it is only a means to an end.
      2.) “Foreign entities shouldn’t interfere with the lives of the local people”. But guess who the f*ck are the only people that can actually *afford* those “lavish” hunts? Yep. People from foreign entities,
      and 3.) “It helps the local people with food and economic income”. How condescending it is that the *only way* that the indigenous people, who have lived off the land for *thousands* of years, now all of a sudden have to depend on rich white Americans and Europeans for their basic necessities.
      The hypocrisy of trophy hunters saying It’S gOoD fOr ThE lOcAlS, when the very practice just screams “colonialism”.

      Correct. We've lost the ability of critical thought and expression in society without reflection. Through the most available source... (Internet).. • @naomitakimoto7295
      @naomitakimoto7295 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@kikia6611 I agree with you, I’m really disgusted by any “hunters” no matter what excuses they say. But at the same time, I understand what Kevin said. If we don’t come up with an alternative solution, just emotional hate or disagree of hunting won’t solve the problem. The core problem is the habitat loss. Simply there’s not enough land for healthy number of apex predators such as lions can thrive naturally. And I think the only solution is not just animals’ population to be controlled, but humans’ population should be much more strictly controlled. First of all, we must reduce the actual number of humans significantly, in order to give the land back to wild animals as they deserve. They’re the original inhabitants of these lands. We humans invaded and stole their natural habitat for ourselves. That was wrong. Period.
      If those cleaver scientists can determine what’s the limit of capacity for each species, they could certainly come up with the appropriate number for humans’ population among all other species based on “true and fair balance of biodiversity conservation” purpose on earth. We all must admit that humans are never any superior than any other species on this planet. Rather, humans are more like viruses keep multiplying until no more host exist. Humans are just one of those species on earth. We all must humbly admit this as a fact!

    • @sandyd9645
      @sandyd9645 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@naomitakimoto7295 yes, well said. The core is habitat loss. I agree, the human population needs to be managed as well as wildlife populations. One small example, say
      A human family has five kids and their kids have kids and so on.. The human population increases and acquires more & more land to build homes for families. Just saying one example, but at some point are we going to say hey our population needs to be controlled as well ?

      It can fund anti-poaching patrols, sure, but it won’t stop the demand, like in Asia, for example, for animal parts.
      The important aspect is teaching people that these animals are worth more *alive* than dead, and the whole ideal of trophy hunting, in which these animals are, again, worth more *dead* than alive, especially regarding the local people, really brings out the wrong type of message, but I do agree with Kevin, and actually came to the same conclusion, myself: we *have* to find a more viable solution, and bitching about it all the time simply doesn’t help.

    Kevin....this is the first time I have commented on your channel...a little story to tell you..I'm 65 and many many years ago the first time I became aware of lion conservation was when I was a child and saw the movie Born Free...that movie changed me as a child and the outlook I had on lions...who are my very favorite animal....how wonderful what you do! To share this is hard, but I've lost both of my children and I was able to share my all time favorite movie Born Free with them..what a beautiful memory I have of that....thank you for all of your videos and making the world aware of conservation and the solutions we need to come up with..God Bless 😊😊

Glad you and others are approaching about what to do of the so called old lions ,and land space. You solved the problem of too many lions by making sure your lions do not reproduce.,and over time,this could be one of the solutions.A series of events will need to happen,not just to decide on just one procedure.In michigan we are getting out populated by deers.Our conservationist brought in wolves, which is working. But when humans take control on nature with park, reserve or zoo, they have the responsability of these animals and they must find solution and it's not easy, i think they try to take better solution for them because they love them. Either way, there will always be some dissatisfied people. Kevin, i think Unathi and Icarus thought you spoke too much and were too far away, so they roared to call you LOL. Since the start of the COVID Pandemic 😷 I’ve been consumed by more immediate issues. Imagine how happy I was to come across you and your lions 🦁.
    I deplore trophy hunting but uphold traditions like annual deer or duck hunting and fishing manage by well written laws - when the meat is consumed I do not hunt myself. My heart is far to tender. But I do like to eat meat. I’m an omnivore. I love my veggies but also believe God gave us animals for protein
    My daughter married in 2020 and had her reception at Moon River Ranch in Texas USA that breeds exotic animals especially endangered species and according to the ranch foreman sells them back to Africa to help the species survive.
    They had a deer named Ella on the ranch that would come when you beckoned her. She actually had a name tag. I remember thinking that a hunt would be absolutely outrageous with such tamed animals. The property was immense. Different sections were managed for whole different purposes. Some farmed, some for breeding purposes and some for hunting and then there was a huge entertainment area for conferences, and weddings and other events.
    Like you say Kevin, there must be a well thought out plan in countries for the maintenance of our natural resources.
    I am certainly grateful to you, your family and organization for the wonderful things you do caring for the lions, other large cats, hyenas etc.
    I strongly encourage corporations looking for a ecological investment for the worlds future to donate - and donate largely - to Kevin’s foundation. He and his wife are dedicating there whole life to this project. As you can imagine it isn’t easy.
    It frustrates me as I’m retired and funds are limited. But if.....What I can do is spread the word and hope someone will listen.
    Good luck Kevin. May God richly Bless you, your family and the foundation ❤️🙏

But I recently started sharing your videos with the Residents and they are absolutely fascinated with what you are doing in your sanctuary. Why not join Kevin's channel, pay a mere $5 a month, and educate yourself about the difference between poachers and trophy hunters. The only alternative is euthanasia so far. Excess male lions maul and kill each other. They can't be released into the wild that already is occupied by other prides of lions or humans. You say "justice" but you clearly aren't being pragmatic or realistic about the realities that exist in an enclosed conservation area. Trophy hunters pay thousands of dollars to conservation that pays personnel to protect lions from poachers...poachers that don't discriminate.

    Kevin, this particular event with the Lions is enlightening and at the same time troubling. There are times you do not have control of the various animals and yet there have to be decisions regarding the volume and the decisions to control the volume of animals per hector. Good night I do not agree with the decisions you are faced with to keep your balance of animals and yet you are faced with that decision. My family and friends keep you in prayer for those kind of decisions. You are truly incredible and so appreciated!!

    Great video. Rather adorable how sounds at 10:13 sound like barking.
    The most troublesome part of this issue for me is perhaps _how_ the hunting is portrayed, as in public it seems to be portrayed as being about the "prize", i.e. "something to put on the wall", and not anything that would engage a discussion on conversation. Not sure if any research is done on this, but it wouldn't be surprising for me to hear about this "prize" approach potentially motivating corruption and poaching, as it is easy to imagine some people, within certain circles, willing to bend the rules to get the "prize" just to not lose in their status. In this sense the question would be, do the real monetary benefits from inviting trophy hunters overweigh the potential negatives.

    • @calmiller3024
      @calmiller3024 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think some trophy hunters that might have killed a lion in the wild would be attracted to a sanctuary that needs that income to support their conservation effort. That hunter is either going to pay a poacher or he can pay to help conserve. Social Media pictures of the "trophy" may not tell the whole story. I think it's a valid solution on more than one front considering the alternatives. A mauled to death older male that probably maimed or injured a younger male horrifically.

    Excellent explanation for a touchy subject Kevin. You're absolutely right about emotions not being involved for prey animals but the higher visibility apex predators get people spun up. We have to look at the problem from all angles, without our emotions to come with the best solutions.
