  • Acrylic Artist Debbie Arnold explains how she uses the various acrylic skins she has created from pouring different Liquitex Acrylic Mediums (bit.ly/Kg44Ye) and Golden Fluid Acrylic (bit.ly/KBzLJM) paints together. The purpose in creating the skins is to use them to produce a finished collage. This Intuitive process is exciting every step of the way. From the techniques, such as dripping, plastic wrap texturing,and sculpting, to dissecting the poured skins to then integrate them on canvas (bit.ly/KBzgQ2) to complete the painting. Debbie will explain the final step in her Intuitive Collaging Process.

    First, I watched the video on how to make the skins, but this video brought it all together, just how to visualize, cut, and assemble. I can't tell you how inspired I am! Thanks!!

    I've gotten a lot out of this series of videos and wanted to say thank you. Like so much of Cheap Joe stuff, there's a splendid mix of inspiration and practicality in them. Go crazy, but don't go broke. Be spontaneous, but control for good results. That kind of balancing act is tough, but it's done so well here that - the enticing fun of pouring aside - it's really encouraging. Cheers to Debbie, Joe, and the anonymous staff who made these vids.

    Warning: Learn from my mistakes! :-) Cheap shower curtains did not work! Not even if they are shiny and smooth and properly stretched tight without wrinkles. Liquitex pouring medium will GLUE itself to the shower curtain and will NOT remove. It could be that shower curtains/liners I used have some kind of acrylic or latex-like component to them that makes the Liquitex bond to them.
    Also, make SURE to mix the pouring medium with paint. Some types of liquid acrylic paint will pool to the top of the leveling gel in a flat mat finish with very little marbling effect (looks as if you painted on top of the dried pouring medium). I believe the paints Debbie uses are liquid paints specifically for pouring. Liquid acrylics designed for painting may not work well at all. The best results I obtained were from mixing pouring medium with paint dyes in small squeeze bottles. Wonderful flowing effects and color were obtained from these.
    I will try to salvage the botched pours that glued to the shower curtains. Even though the pouring lines and marbling were minimal, leveling gel on top of them (for a flat glass like finish) glued to small canvases will hopefully make some interesting tiles.

    Totally enjoyed your videos. Can't wait to give it a try. I have tube acrylic paints can I squeeze them into some other medium to make it pourable? I get confused with all the bottles and jars of art supplies that are available and what you do with each one. Thanks

    Hey I am thinking maybe I could use this type of technique for my mixed media collage illustrations ..DO u think the pouring would work on clear OHP sheets? I am just thinking what could I do it on to easily cut it out on smaller scales? Thanks..Luv your work, amazing!

    Interesting video and informative. I heard using pouring medium for acrylic skins and could not understand why someone would do this. Thank you.

    Debbie - How do you handle lifting that may occur from overlapping the skins ? Is this a big problem when the skins overlap each other, or does the application of the medium secure the edges of overlapping enough so that you would not have to worry about them. Also, if there is a noticeable lift in the overlapping edge, do you ever add paint to the uplifting edge to integrate so that the seam will be less visible. Thanks so much for your help ! ( I hope I have made my questions understandable }
