I might have the answer for that: Knowing that when in the Avatar state anyone who dies will break the avatar cycle forever ♾ Roku may have wanted to sacrifice himself to help save the future. Avatar state or not it would’ve been too much to handle and in the end he would meet the same fate of passing due to toxic gas only this time he would break the Avatar cycle and the world would remain unbalanced.
@@purequran6760 The things is, how do they know that the cycle would break forever? has it happened before? And if it has that means it didn't happen forever.
Charmander - No, the Writers said the Tattoos glow during the Avatar State Because it looks cool. Obviously its glowing because he’s in the avatar state, when speaking about the show precisely.
well he was in a hurry for one. He also had to look deep inside himself and he probably couldn’t have looked to far. Additionally I think going for an avatar that far back wouldn’t understand the political climate or understand in general.
The whole series takes place within a year's time. traveling all over the world and mastering all four elements. creating allies contacts and messing up cabbage carts. to be honest if you think about what he achieved in this series is nothing short of amazing. The fact that he did all that within a year.
well, like the show says the avatar in the avatar state is when he is at the most powerful but most vulnerable. A combustion bender is naturally very powerful but vulnerable, too. Any hit to their tats on their forheads, will cause their body to swell to the point where combustion bending can't be done, and if its even attempted will blow up in the avatars face, now combine that with the avatars state so its even more powerful. it would be suicide. Not worth it
Rather it be just because it’s on the chi path, I believe it’s also because the tattoos symbolise a spiritual mastery. Yes you have to master airbending, but you also have to master the spiritual knowledge, understanding and have a spiritual connection - which is why the tattoos glow; as the avatar is a spiritual person, the tattoos are the symbolic result of mastering spirituality
Rich Richardson as an airbender, he mastered his element and received the spiritual tattoos, which run along the chi path. Knowing or not knowing this doesn’t change the fact that they glow. He learnt the rest afterwards. Edit: Aang was a very spiritual person; he was only 12 may I remind you. Since Airbender Avatars have tattoos, their epidermis has been punctured by the tattoo and so the glow leaks from that area, making the tattoos glow
I always thought that Aang’s and other Air Nation Avatars tattoos glowed was because they were channeling Ravaa’s energy through their whole body and their tattoos along with their eyes showed that they were channeling cosmic power
Everyone's talking about Sparky Sparky boom boom man and his third eye glowing if he had the Avatar's power, but I'm just terrified of an Avatar able to control 5 freaking elements.
What if they mix an ingredient in a dye, that has spiritual properties. For example, they could use the water from spiritual oasis or something like that for making the tattoos more than just a paint. In the Avatar state the ingredient would probably react to it and start glowing. Well, that's what came to my mind, just a thought.

Might be off topic but since Fully Realised Avatars was mentioned in the video, I feel like it’s worth adding that when Avatars have fully mastered the Avatar state, their eyes only glow briefly. It’s also seen by Kyoshi when she separates the lands, and by various unnamed Avatars when Roku is explaining the avatar state during a flashback.
It’s because avatar has a semi hard magic system and the tattoos glowing is confusing to some when really it shouldn’t be. The tattoos glow because they follow chi paths all throughout his body. The glow in an avatars eyes symbolizes them channeling the strength and knowledge of past avatars, that channeling of energy causes the chi paths to open completely and causes the tattoos to glow
Because it's an Air Nomad tradition. The other Avatars didn't belong to the Air Nomads so I guess they couldn't have them even if they mastered Airbending.
They're so spiritual that when the avatar go in the avatar it activates something / connects with all the past life's that it activates the gloe connected to the past life's and the tatoos had an spiritual connection to the user/special ink
I WAS ASKING THIS QUESTION! Like, they're just tattoos, not supernatural things, it's so weird, I thought that it has something to do with Raava. That was my best guess, but yours makes a lot more sense
It's based like old forms of kung fu. In kung fu you have certain techniques called bagua. Most warrior monks only Master about 7, mainly focusing on one particular set. As a matter of fact in legends of Korra, Tenzin had Melo take the air nomads and do bagua. Do research on kung fu, and it's many fighting forms.
I dont recall them being called tiers but they are different airbending techniques thay u have to master before you get your tattoos. Aang mastered 35 and made his own (the air scooter), so he was able to get his tattoos a lot earlier than most
I feel like nobody noticed the markings on the Air Lion Turtle itself. It had markings on its face and down each limb as well, much like the tattoos @1:26
Yo you’re right, but I guess they didn’t expect that part to be slowed down, that part right there to be animated at such a quick rate would take a few extra thousand dollars just to animate.
@@its392yugrajio but I've also noticed in another scene that it's happened to another avatar air-bender when Roku is talking about how the avatar cycle works. book two, episode one
I think it's probably because of how sentimental his tattoos are, and him being an air nomad who I think would be more intune with their spirituality. The fact that his tattoos are so important to his culture and himself allows them to glow
I always thought that the tattoos were made with some type of Spiritual ink made out of a plant found only in the Air Temples (similar to the fruit from Black Panther) and it would glow due to the massive amount of Spiritual Energy going through the avatar. This made sense to me because the Air Benders were extremely spiritual people.
Gib Gardien darkness thrives in the void. Those who are narrow-minded do not see the bigger picture. They follow power. In the avatar world they followed ozai. People as a whole follow the darkness if they cannot witness the light
i disagree. i really feel like aang is. he didn't have the time to train like kyoshi did and his power is still IMMENSELY expansive. he basically flenched and COMPLETELY destroyed two sand gliders. i mean he put no effort into that at all and made a tiny explosion happen
It is a fair answer however she was never emotionally balanced. She would always be strict and straightforward. If an emotional stage occluded in her life during a battle she would’ve been unprepared and would’ve been 85% bound to fail. However in some cases she would be the strongest.
Idk her air bending was weak because of her moms spiritual disconnection to the air nomad religion I say rokus the most powerful he mastered all of the bending forms easily and could display it (like in the start of the show) idk maybe I’m wrong
Low Distortion but aang does have to many nut huggers cuz he’s the star of the show kinda natrual to feel like the lead is the strongest or the best cuz u see him the most
My question is, why was Korra able to talk to Iroh in the spirit world but unable to talk to other avatars? Couldn't they just meet in the spirit world like Iroh and her did? Even though she broke the connection with them, weren't they in the spirit world anyway?
Amagi, you’re wrong. Aang didn’t get his arrows when he was 12, but he had them when he adopted Appa as his own. So Ginora wasn’t the youngest person alive to master airbending- Aang was.
I think I heard somewhere that airbender tattoos work similarly to Maui's tattoos from Moana. They appear on the body when the prerequisites are met, and they are pure spirit energy concentrated into those parts of their body.
Korra broke the cycle and made a new one. I think the past Avatars are just chilling in the Spirit World. I don't think Korra can call upon them anymore
From the looks of the first Air Nomads were super spiritual and seem know more about the spirit world at hand. With that being said, it seems like the early Air Nomads were paying tribute to Raava as the early tattoos looked like her upside or flowing into the direction that the bender was bending in. I would speculate that to protect the knowledge that Raava and Wan fused which would have directly impacted the Avatar cycle if someone found out and tried to kill Wan....that they changed the tattoo to the Flying Bison arrow as the Bison were also known to the Air Nomads to be the first airbenders. Just my look on it.
Hope everyone knows that we all have a third eye it is called the ( pineal gland) in our brain's we also all have the 7 chakras just do your own research
I had been wondering this for a while so I am glad that you answered it. I just thought of another question though. Since Avatars have mastery over the 4 elements can they also master more lesser known and rarer abilities too? For example metal bending and lava bending?
It's a little more nuanced: It's a combination of the Avatar's own Chakra mixing with Raava, and with the Air Nomads heightened sense of spirituality in combination with the the Tattoos being CAREFULLY placed along a given Nomads own Chakra Path, it acts like a window to see the Chakra flowing.
When Aang was telling Katara why he ran away he got angry about the elders talking about sending him away. His tattoos began glowing, wind whipped around the cave they were in and fed the fire as cinders flew. Once Katara said, "Whoa, hot cinders!" Aang said, "Im sorry for getting so MAD." I guess it means the glowing has to do with their mood and how it affects their chi path. However in another episode, one in the swamp where Sokka seen Yue, Katara seen her mother and Aang seen Toph. Once he realized the whole swamp was connected he place his hand on the grand tree in the center and the tattoo on the hand which was placed on the root glowed. So maybe it has to do with looking into ones self, Aang looks into himself when he has no one to turn to and his loved ones are in danger which brought on the Avatar state. They also bagan glowing as he let the cosmic energy flow as he attempted opening his chakras to master the Avatar State.
We've seen Raava and Vaatu in LOK, Raava also said that "the one never exist without the other". When Unaavatu destroyed Raava, Raava will re appear inside Vaatu, Korra later got Raava back from Unaavatu and destroyed him. So Vaatu will appear inside Raava while she's inside the Avatar? Where metal benders like Kuvira got her endless supply of metal up her sleeves when fighting the bandits? And where metal benders hid those long metal wires?
You can see that Lin has her metal wires on her back and I believe that some of the other metal benders have the coils of wire on their side like where you would hold a messenger bag. You can see Korra with one of them when Suyin was teaching her metal bending
it shows the energy flow or something once aang said also he always shaves his head to feel the air better remember once he was in kinda coma he had hair
I like how he say that it's the air tats on the avatar glows then shows a air avatar without the glowing tattoos isbjust gold Ang is just one of a kind
My theory is that the ink is infused with spiritual energy. Just like the water from the Northern Water Tribe. When Katara healed Aang from the lightning strike, the water she used glowed white when activated. When material items are infused with spiritual energy, they glow once that energy is awakened.
I think previously the air nation avatars' tattoos did not glow (I think I noticed this in the show) which would mean either over time Raava became much stronger and with more overflowing energy that it started finding other possible ways to leak out (eyes probably glow because it the open access to vessels and stuff too, like they are literally gateway to release excessive hormones) Or because Raava found it would be more eye catching and intimidating. . Or both
At 4:35 if you slow down the video to about .5 or .25 you can see that the there are actually 2 air nomads in that sequence with tattoos that don't glow. Aang might just be a special case.
becuase the fact that it follows the chi paths and thats why aangs tattoos glow, id like to imagine any avatar could have tattoos along the chi paths that would glow in the avatar state. imagine a firebender avatar who had a fire pattern tattoo along the chi paths
You said that all the Air Nomad Avatars' tattoos glow when Aang is in the Avatar State but at 4:36 and 4:38 the Air Nomad Avatars with their arrows aren't glowing. Is there an explanation for that too?
4:36-4:40 in slow mo, you will see that none of the other air bender tats glow, I guess they made that sequence of animation before they thought to make Aangs tats glow.
Objection. When Aang gets his avatar state back after the rock hit his back you see all the avatars appearing again. You also see a fast closeups of all the other avatars before him, here all the airbender’s tattoos glow but their tattoos do not. So this is either a thing within avatar state flashbacks or a different explanation is needed.
If bending is tied to the person's spirit and the tattoos represent a mastery over the bending, then it's no wonder that the Avatar state embraces the markings not just as a symbol of the Avatar state, but as a symbol to justify the Avatar's mastery over airbending. If there were markings to represent mastery of waterbending, firebending, and earthbending, then they would likely glow as well.
What happened to all the lion turtles? Did there only exist some of them (one for each bending art and one for energybending) or there were a lot across the world? If that's the case, did only some of them have the ability to bend or there were individual species each one with its own bending?
Could someone possibly tell me from which comic the page is at 1:57 where it shows aang angry at some people for tattooing themselfs with the airbending tattoos
I always thought because the air nomads were so deeply spiritual because they were all born with are bending when they get their tattoos and because they're deep spirituality that they when they enter the Avatar State the tattoos close in response to their spiritual energy and how deep in their connection goes to being very spiritual 🙏.

It’s because avatar has a semi hard magic system and the tattoos glowing is confusing to some when really it shouldn’t be. The tattoos glow because they follow chi paths all throughout his body. The glow in an avatars eyes symbolizes them channeling the strength and knowledge of past avatars, that channeling of energy causes the chi paths to open completely and causes the tattoos to glow
everybody gangsta till the tattoos start glowing
Let’s just forget about The “Legend” of Korra, it messes up too many storylines, lore, and the nature of the world itself.
Oh shut up
No it doesn’t. It makes sense and plus it makes sense
Go back to r/UnpopularOpinions
Nah, if you actually look at the details, Korra answers more questions than one might think. It doesn't contradict the Lore in any substantial way.
xAlpaca Zeu woah, I never thought about it that way.
I feel like they explained this in the show as the tattoos go across the chakras.
1- what happened to zukos crew?
2- Have any avatars been killed in combat?
SLAVE 702 wan kinda did
zukos crew was recruited to admiral zhao
@@maxtran7426 but what did they do after zhao "died", did they rejoin zuko after the war?
They really just weren't focused on
avatar roku was killed by sozin
Why do tattoo glow ME: It’s because it looks cool
My question is why didn’t other avatars get (or have to get) tattoos once they mastered air
THIRD
It looks cool
Thank you for these awesome informational videos.
You're welcome!

what are the 36 tiers of airbending ?
It had markings on its face and down each limb as well, much like the tattoos @1:26
when you slow down on 4:37 to 0.25 speed, you can see one of the past airbender avatar's tattoos not glowing :/
If there was a combustion bending Avatar. Would their eye tattoo glow
yes.
Yes, because it's the third eye Chakra.
I just assumed it was because the airbenders were more spiritual than the other nations.
Wow i absolutely love your theory you earned my subscription i wasn't expecting such a great explanation from such a short viseo
why does the avatar make balance while he has just the spirit of the light? for balance you need light AND dark right?
Gib Gardien darkness thrives in the void. Those who are narrow-minded do not see the bigger picture. They follow power. In the avatar world they followed ozai. People as a whole follow the darkness if they cannot witness the light
Raava said it herself that she's always attached to the dark spirit (her counterpart, I forgot his name lmao) so when there's light, there's darkness.
I mean thats the problem with raava nad vaatu. I dont like what they did with the avatars origins in korra.
@@MamziBella The other spirits name is Vaatu. When they were introduced, I had a hard time remembering their names too
At 4:37, when the previous avatars are shown very fast, you see a previous airbender avatar with glowing eyes but not his tattoos.
Kyoshi is arguably the strongest avatar ever
i disagree. i really feel like aang is. he didn't have the time to train like kyoshi did and his power is still IMMENSELY expansive. he basically flenched and COMPLETELY destroyed two sand gliders. i mean he put no effort into that at all and made a tiny explosion happen
@@shamanllama she lived to be 230 years old aang has so many nut huggers
It is a fair answer however she was never emotionally balanced. She would always be strict and straightforward. If an emotional stage occluded in her life during a battle she would’ve been unprepared and would’ve been 85% bound to fail. However in some cases she would be the strongest.
Idk her air bending was weak because of her moms spiritual disconnection to the air nomad religion I say rokus the most powerful he mastered all of the bending forms easily and could display it (like in the start of the show) idk maybe I’m wrong
Low Distortion but aang does have to many nut huggers cuz he’s the star of the show kinda natrual to feel like the lead is the strongest or the best cuz u see him the most
At around 4:30 there's a frame of an air nomad avatar that doesn't have the glowing tattoo. But then the others did.
My question is, why was Korra able to talk to Iroh in the spirit world but unable to talk to other avatars? Couldn't they just meet in the spirit world like Iroh and her did? Even though she broke the connection with them, weren't they in the spirit world anyway?
Cus the spirit world is big. I think.
yes she can find them in the spirit world they didnt include it tho
Did Iroh die, then go into the spirit world? Or did he went into the spirit world to live?
Hello! Thanks for this video, keep it up.
Did the breaking of the avatar cycle in Korra kill the individuality of all the other avatars? Or are they just chilling somewhere
Korra broke the cycle and made a new one. I think the past Avatars are just chilling in the Spirit World. I don't think Korra can call upon them anymore
Yeah they were dead already, but they weren't erased.
When I was younger, I thought the tattoos were an avatar thing rather than an airbender thing
I never thought about it untill recently but aangs tattoos shouldn't glow
No
They should
I had been wondering this for a while so I am glad that you answered it. I just thought of another question though. Since Avatars have mastery over the 4 elements can they also master more lesser known and rarer abilities too? For example metal bending and lava bending?
We see Korra learn metalbending in The Legend of Korra so yes.
So why did it glow again? Did I miss the answer or u just didn’t answer? (Genuine question)
At the end they said it’s because the tattoos follow chi paths, so basically an avatar could have any kind of tattoo on his arms and it would glow.
@@threeroofs8815 thanks dude
At 4:28 if u look closely, u can see another air nomad with tattoos, but his do not glow, even if he was in the avatar state.
Bruh, he just got the glow in the night stickers
Finally, after so long, I have an answer to how airbenders receive their tattoos!
I love your content
it shows the energy flow or something once aang said also he always shaves his head to feel the air better remember once he was in kinda coma he had hair
I want to see the history of the amagi
I think previously the air nation avatars' tattoos did not glow (I think I noticed this in the show) which would mean either over time Raava became much stronger and with more overflowing energy that it started finding other possible ways to leak out (eyes probably glow because it the open access to vessels and stuff too, like they are literally gateway to release excessive hormones)
Or because Raava found it would be more eye catching and intimidating.
.
Or both
At 4:35 if you slow down the video to about .5 or .25 you can see that the there are actually 2 air nomads in that sequence with tattoos that don't glow. Aang might just be a special case.
imagine unalaq touched the sspirit portal and started a line of dark avatars
becuase the fact that it follows the chi paths and thats why aangs tattoos glow, id like to imagine any avatar could have tattoos along the chi paths that would glow in the avatar state. imagine a firebender avatar who had a fire pattern tattoo along the chi paths
Aang Just got into His Guardian's Glow in the dark paint
Love your videos!
The thing that scared my the most was when aang was taking away ozais bending away
You said that all the Air Nomad Avatars' tattoos glow when Aang is in the Avatar State but at 4:36 and 4:38 the Air Nomad Avatars with their arrows aren't glowing. Is there an explanation for that too?
always thought it was a physical manifestation of his connection to the spirit world
Hey @theamagi I love the music in the background of your videos, can you help with the title or link where I can get it
4:36-4:40 in slow mo, you will see that none of the other air bender tats glow, I guess they made that sequence of animation before they thought to make Aangs tats glow.
Imagine if a combustionbending Avatar’s forehead tatoo glowed.
Finally someone asks the real questions here
I would like you to explain the history of the Avatar State, please
They all went extinct except one
Because he's awesome😩😍
Could someone possibly tell me from which comic the page is at 1:57 where it shows aang angry at some people for tattooing themselfs with the airbending tattoos
for a long time, i thought that all avatars had tattoos that glow
2:54 Yay! There back in the cycle! :)
I always thought because the air nomads were so deeply spiritual because they were all born with are bending when they get their tattoos and because they're deep spirituality that they when they enter the Avatar State the tattoos close in response to their spiritual energy and how deep in their connection goes to being very spiritual 🙏.
Title of video: Why do Aang’s tattoos glow
Me: Why not!!!
